My dog is a Caucasian too, you were very good with Rex! yeah Caucasians are the example of "barking dogs seldom bite". The growl too was without teeth, so more of a statement then a warning, but the muzzle if you don't know the dog is the best choice, you did well. They require authority and respect, they are intelligent judges too, if you try to deceive them or to use force or worse some sort of violence on them it's over. All the people saying the growling wasn't aggressive and "just a warning" crack me up. All growling is a warning. A warning that the dog is not happy with the situation and is going to bite if the situation continues as is . Quite frankly, I wouldn't have attempted grooming this dog without it being muzzled the entire time. The dog has never been groomed before, doesn't know the groomer, and is bigger than she is. Muzzles are made for just this type of situation. I've seen what a large dog can do to a human, and her inside a small space with him, and him not muzzled, made me extremely nervous. I sincerely hope that she will be more cautious in the future.

@@trudyisaacs840 I wonder if medicating a dog like this to make them more tranquil is an option. This is truly frightening. I've been bitten by dogs twice (as a child, a friend's police trained German Shepherd and another neighbor's dog that was simply crabby because of the heat) and I've never had a dog since except Goldens. Give me a completely passive dog only.
@trudyisaacs840
@trudyisaacs840 Год назад
@@signalfire6691 If you're talking about medicating them around the clock, the answer is no. No reputable vet is going to agree to that. And shouldn't. Everyone looking to get a dog needs to be responsible, and investigate the breed they are interested in. Some breeds are just not a good fit for the average person. Some are not a good fit with families. It's the nature of the breed. Medicating won't stop it. And isn't healthy for the dog. But if you mean medicating for the purpose of grooming, the answer is maybe. Some groomers will agree to sedate a dog who is problematic during grooming. But there are risks with sedation. So many won't agree to it. Instead, they'll muzzle the dog to prevent biting, and may use a sling or straps to immobilize the dog as much as possible. One of the most important things dog owners can do is groom their pets regularly. Play with their feet. Rub their faces around the eyes and ears. Raise their skin around their teeth. Play with their snout. Get them used to being handled. This should start the day you bring your puppy home. It may be difficult if you adopt an older dog, and you may have to muzzle them at first. But getting them used to being picked up, their ears, mouths, and faces being touched, as well as their feet, is essential to having a dog that behaves well during grooming. And vet visits. Sadly, far too many dogs are deemed aggressive and not adoptable, and end up being euthanized. All because their original owner didn't take the time to train them properly.

I also appreciate that she knows when to stop with a dog, depending on their body language, like a good groomer should. When my family started finding a groomer for our dog, my brother’s girlfriend at the time recommended a lady she knew. Worst groomer ever. She worked out of her garage, she never cut my dog’s ears or tail (she’s a doodle so she needs her whole body cut) and my dog looked awful. The lady didn’t even have a crate to keep the dog in while they waited for their owner. She left my dog in a playpen with a board on top so she couldn’t jump out. She also said my dog was “aggressive” at her first appointment. Yeah, my dog who had never been groomed before, aside from brushing at home, was very aggressive 🥴 Took my dog to a groomer who works out of our vet’s office and we’ve never had a single complaint.

yes a million times yes. people who do not acclimate their pets to handling are asking for an accident down the line. this goes for dogs and cats. as babies, touch ther paws, use tools around them, positively reinforce good interactions with strangers. train train train! it will pay off in spades by the time your animal is an adult that can seriously maim someone if triggered. ill never understand why people get breeds that require intense coat maintenance and then do not maintain their coat or train them to be acclimated to grooming! sure, not EVERY pet is going to have the best temperament, but you as an owner should have considered your ability to train the breed for basic life skills then.

My grandfather grew up with not one but 6 of these beauties in Romania. He was a shepard and tended to over 200 sheep. He would take them to a pasture way out in the countryside and lived out there with the sheep as they grazed. The six dogs would be along side him and tended to the sheep. I visited him once and was amazed at the size of the dogs and how well trained they were. My grandfather told me of the numerous times he would find a dead fox and then find some evidence of blood splatter on one of the dogs. It was the foxes, never the dogs. One dog did get into a fight with two wolves and the other dogs came to help out but one wolf was already dead and the other was injured and running away by the time the other dogs came to help. Maybe my grandfather was exagerating, but I do not think so. I stayed with him in his little house in the fields one night and could hear wolves howling. My grandfather would groom the dogs with a huge brush. He said it made the dogs pretty and that made him happy. He would breed them every two years and the demand for the puppies was so high that he was very picky who he sold them to, only the best farmers he knew. When he was too old to be a shepard, he bred the dogs and people as far as Australia would come visit him in hopes of buying a puppy. He only dealt with farmers who would have the dogs to herd animals and would demand updates or he would never deal with them again. He had a loyal following and if they wanted more dogs, they would give him updates.

Not only train your dog, but know your breeds before you choose your dog. It's insane to me that there are people out there getting border collies and then deciding to have it in an apartment and with little stimulation, and then wondering why their dog is a mess of bad behaviours and severe neglect. Do I think Rexx is cute? Absolutely. Am I aware of the reasons this dog might not be for me, even IF I was a good trainer? Absolutely. And even if you have a perfectly trained dog, you might not have touched all bases that most dog owners these days would - things like grooming and desensitizing your dog to strangers touching its paws or looking at their teeth for your vet appointments is actually very common things owners forget to do. It's sad, really.

You shouldn't be afraid of dogs, but you should always bear in mind they have strong jaws, sharp teeth and they're very fast when they want to be. Generally speaking, if it's not your dog then take direction from the owner about how friendly they are and you should always pay attention to the dog's body language and vocalisations (if there are any). A wagging tail does not mean friendly or happy necessarily. And if you ever are attacked by a dog, go for the eyes. If you have a heavy object on hand or within grasping distance then you might be able to just cave its skull in as well. A lot of dogs will bite, hold and thrash and you're unlikely to get even a small dog to let go by anything other than training or lethal damage.

The only time he would snap at my uncle is when he was washed down with the hose or if you took a hambone from him after Easter or Christmas dinner. The sound from the basement as he flopped down on the first floor sounded like a cannonball hitting the ground. Can't say enough good things about him. Incredible dog.

We had one for almost 14 years, he was such a sweetheart with the three of us in the family, but no one else was allowed in if he was outside. He was a "rescue" of some sort, my father bought some green areas with ponds and stuff in the late '90s and he was just left guarding what appeared to be a broken down fishing shed. No one knew who the owners were so they decided to keep him. After a while we had to pull out and dig all the fencing deeper because he almost pushed it out. He was a menace, but the most lovable menace i've known.

He's a good boy, he's just a lot to handle and it takes patience & precautions. 😂❤ I'm amazed at how patient & trusting he was considering the situation and breed history. @ninja011

@@Grintock True, but temperament is a big factor too. It looks like Rex has a generally calmer temperament than the dogs that were bred for hard work. I have found that the Ovcharkas that were bread to be pets rather than farming and guard dogs tend to be more "Mellow" than the ones that are working dogs. Aggression is strong in the working dogs because it is believed it makes them more driven to do the job. Sadly aggression can be a double-edged sword and make the dog uncontrollable and dangerous. In my dealings with the breed, the more "Mellow" ones are just as dedicated and driven to do their job and are more controllable and less likely to hurt family members or livestock. My experience comes from growing up on an Agricultural Collected in the Soviet Union, where we had a small pack of Ovcharkas to guard against wolves and bears.

I wouldn’t have gotten anywhere near a CO without the owner around- but the owner has done his best to make his as friendly and sociable as possible. These dogs can take out 2-3 wolves at the same time. They usually only answer to one person - it was strange seeing him listen to you.

My uncle had a dog who growled almost every time you touched him. But it wasn't that he didn't like being patted. In fact, he would lean into you and give you pleading looks. It was his way of warding away other dogs and having you all to himself. We called him Disel because if you patted him roughly, he would rev like a motorbike. Edit: It is even funnier because he was a working dog on my uncle's sheep farm. He had a mean look about him, was not afraid to boss around rams and was standoffish with other dogs. Yet, he was the biggest cuddle bug.
@mvv700
@mvv700 Год назад
Ha! I used to walk a rottie for a while that was an absolute motorpowered cuddlefest. She'd growl on and off while petting her, and the better the petting, the louder the growl. If she'd turn on her back laying against you she'd just let all her muscles relax and jaw would slowly fall open making her lips 'fall' leaving her teeth bare, she looked like an absolute demon going full motorbike-rev enjoying the scratches. Man I miss her! Growling for dogs isn't only negative! Often it's pleasure/play or even general frustration as well - a bit like how we complain and brood when we cant get it our way :) For anyone reading this, don't take chances if you have minimal experience with dogs, or with strange dogs, different dogs communicate a bit different the same as us. Just distance yourself to be safe. Dogs communicate a lot and it's easy to miss a sign that would change an 'I love this' into a 'Please go away' resulting into a bite. (which often is a warning bite, but since people often teach their puppies never to use their teeth with people they don't know how hard they can bite, so they often draw blood without intention).
