Fun places to visit with a Private Pilots License.
Today we're going on a short flight to one of (if not the) most interesting airfields in Europe.
Made famous during World War 2 as a fighter base for the Supermarine Spitfire and as the home base of the Memphis Belle movie (1990) RAF Duxford is now just EGSU Duxford Airfield and owned and operated by the Imperial War Museum.
There's so much to see at Duxford including the prototype Concorde 101, the Vulcan, classic British airliners and so much more.
Duxford is also home to the American Air Museum in Britain, showing B17 Bomber, the F15 Eagle and the SR71 Black Bird along with over a dozen more classic American aircraft.
www.iwm.org.uk/visits/iwm-dux...
www.americanairmuseum.com/
So join me today as I take you for a quick tour of some of the exhibits at this amazing airfield in the heart of the Cambridgeshire countryside.
My name is Terry Kent and I am a General Aviation PPL private pilot operating out of North Weald EGSX about 12 miles to the north east of London in the UK. Short Field is my channel focused on the lighter side of General Aviation including flight and airfield reviews, equipment unboxing and review plus all things private pilot related. I use various cameras to record my videos including GoPro and Insta 360 and stills and edit them in Adobe Premiere Pro, I am an animator as well and often use animations to describe situations more clearly I use Blender and Adobe After Effects for these. I always attempt to post my videos in the highest possible quality, normally 4k.
I fly a 2011 Pipersport two seat single engine aircraft that is also known as the PS28 or SportCruiser in the USA (America) it is know under the FAA as an LSA or Light Sport Aircraft and can be flown on a very basic license. In the UK it is a Part 21 airplane which requires a full licence but it's generally cheap to run, affordable maintenance and great value for money. It cruises at 100 to 105 knots and has superb short take off and landing or STOL capabilities. I visit farm strips, back country and short airfields, some of them dangerous and I try not to crash :-), as well as international airports and try to learn something new every time I fly.
I fly VFR and IFR as well as visual and instrument approaches.
My videos may give helpful information to pilots but please remember these are just for entertainment, I am not an instructor nor should anything shown in my videos be used for real world aviation, also the airfields I visit may have totally changed or even closed since the making of the video so always consult the latest information for your country.
If you enjoyed this video, please give it a ‘thumbs up’ and leave me a comment in the box below, I love to read them and I also like to hear what you like or dislike about my video. Please share it with anyone you think would be interested and I'd so love it if you ticked SUBSCRIBE and DING THE NOTIFICATION BELL to be informed by RU-vid when I upload my next video. Thank you so much.
If you are interested, my video content is available to purchase as stock footage, please contact me via my email address in the ABOUT section of my channel for more information.
If you like my content you could buy me a coffee but no worries if you don't want too, I'm just chuffed that you are even interested in my videos, and if you ever see me at any airfields please come over and say 'Hi' and I'll probably buy you a coffee.

Another cracking video - thanks. Cool camera angles etc from below😊👍👍✌️ Nice landing at Duxford👍👍😊 Good points about flying on the ground, fixed wing microlights are the same, they don't stop flying until in the hanger and secured😄👍 also, rightly or wrongly, on a wide runway, when back-tracking I was told to use one side or the other rather than the centre line "although technically the runway is yours and you're cleared, just in case some twa.....other fellow decides to land or is non radio and decides to land, you'll be okay then, unless it's a Galaxy of Jumbo Jet". Haven't been to Duxford for years, we organised a trip (by car) for friends (one was recently bereaved), years back, early 2000s, arrived to find my dad's old kitfox on the Apron. It was still in the faux red arrows type paint scheme that I'd designed as a teenager (an in joke - the Reds buzzed dad near to Fairford, their fault not his I hasten to add, they hadn't told Brize nor Fairford what they were doing as they headed back to Kemble). We went to the Tower and put a call out for the pilot. He was a Monarch ALP, loved the kitfox as light relief from bus driving. We'd done lots mods to it, it fought us all the way during the build, we had to get outside help in the end (we grounded the fleet several times as we weren't happy with what we found - especially the fuel tanks). Our help at 'Cambridge' were great though, tied up lots of loose ends, took our headaches and build fatigue away. It was test flown by Marshall's test pilot 'JBB', lovely guy, well spoken, skilled, calm, friendly, no side to him. When he took my dad up for the first time, the wind was down the runway and they virtually took off on the numbers and landed back on them again - JBB showing off his skills. After ten minutes JBB said that dad was fine to fly it solo (dad had a lot of time on tail draggers). Happy days!😊👍👍

Thank you for the always kind comments and you are correct I should have back-tracked to one side just lazy. That's a great story about your dad and the Kitfox, brilliant. Thank you again.

@@ShortField As always you're most welcome. The back tracking? Don't worry about it, just my enquiring mind and double checking what I was told some time back. Thanks re the kitfox, it was lovely to see its new owner enjoying it, we'd had a love/hate relationship with the build (MK1, early UK one too) and iirc dad kept it about 2-3 years, moved onto a mint refurbished Luscombe until his shoulder couldn't put up with swinging the prop😊😊

Love your comments about QFE and QNH. When I was flying, after getting my IR, I only used QNH but as part of the pre-departure checks always wound the altimeter back to the airfield elevation to check the altimeter concurred with airfield elevation (ie a basic altimeter check) then reset to QNH. Never flew in to or out of an airfield without checking the plate first and having it available to hand.

@ShortField

Old Warden is second on the list of my favs, but I think Duxford has it due to the shear amount of different aircraft types available to view up close and the way alot of the exhibits are dressed in context. Don't get me wrong Old Warden is a very close second and with both being within a 25 minute flight for me I feel totally spoilt. Thanks for watching, really windy day though!

When the max wind is strong, how do you make a risk assessment flight decision? What are your limits. I dont know the limitations of the aircraft's crosswind component and also dont know how insurance, legal requirements and what max figure not merge with pilots decision to fly, nor do I know at what windspeed level one cant fly. Is it based on the aircrafts pilot operators handbook crosswind component? How do you decide and can you still choose to take off in strong winds whilst remaining safely insured up to a certain level of windspeed?
@ShortField
@ShortField 4 месяца назад
Crosswind limit is a demonstrated limit and it's in the POH. However this is not a hard limit it was just demonstrated on a particular day. I would say when the rudder doesn't have enough authority to keep you going straight down the runway you've probably gone beyond the physical limits of the airframe :-) I suppose my answer would be experience.
@harmonised8353
@harmonised8353 4 месяца назад
@@ShortField Righto, gotcha. it sounds like pilots can legally fly in strong winds with any amount of crosswind, at the pilots own discretion, if Ive understood correctly.

I don't understand the british use of QFE over QNH. In my 5000 hrs of flying I've never used QFE at any airfield. I find the idea of aircraft roaming around the same piece of sky on different altimeter settings quite scarey. As an aside question, could you do a video on UK VFR charts. I frequently look at them online but can't make heads or tails of where class G is and controlled airspace is on the charts and the lower limits of controlled airspace.
@ShortField
@ShortField 2 года назад
Thanks for the comment and view. QFE is stupid if you don't know the airfield elevation you shouldn't be trying to land on it. Aussies have it right it's an RAF hangover that needs to go completely. Sadly it's only the current and ex-military airfields that pass it. At our airfield we sit at 260 ft AMSL with controlled airspace above us at 1,500 ft as North Weald used to be an RAF airfield they insisted on passing the QFE until recently, you can imagine the amount of CA Busts we had. They don't do it any longer. Thanks again for the great comment and watch.
@paullyons1141
@paullyons1141 2 года назад
Ah yes Duxford...our group's home base. Such a privilege to operate out of DX. And indeed, QFE was unknown to me too having learnt to fly at an airfield that is 4950 feet AMSL! There's not enough turns on the altimeter's knob to achieve a QFE at that height! I still can't be bothered to set QFE when flying solo...only set it to satisfy my instructor every two years.
@ShortField
@ShortField 2 года назад
You're very lucky to be based there although lack of hangarage for GA residents would be an issue for us. I thought the £50 note in the logbook was 'to satisfy the instructor' on your checkride 🙂
@paullyons1141

Haha Terry £50 doesn't quite cut it the way I fly! Indeed, outside parking is okay for spamcans but isn't ideal for modern light aircraft.
