I'm not here to brag about how much money I made or to whine about how little I earned. The goal of this channel is to provide a behind-the-scenes look at what life was like as a professional runner. 2015 was a very good year for me, but a bit of an outlier. Most year's I made significantly less. What other BTS info would you like to hear about? Let me know in the comments below or DM me on Instagram here: instagram.com/nicksymmonds

Working in finance, I just want to say thanks for posting videos regarding finances at all, especially knowing you have a lot of young followers. This is a great service to them, so many people are afraid to discuss financial information at all that it really hurts young people as they reach adulthood and have to learn how to manage finances without any guidance.

Honestly the transparency is greatly appreciated. I have always been curious how much runners make because they're not like "other" athletes who have signed a contract with a professional organization and are designated to one league. Obviously your numbers differ from runner to runner but it gives us a good glimpse how it may be for other runners. Thanks dude! Cheers from Boise!

Nick, thanks for sharing that. You were one of the top runners in the World and you were making a good living, however I am guessing only about 10-20% of professional runners are making enough to survive. If you are not winning major races, or running very elite times or not getting appearance money it must be really hard to survive.

@thegreatalyssa 3 года назад
Yeah, I don't have the time to tell all the differences my friends and I had with a running income. I was lucky that I never needed it. One of my friends who was a gold and bronze Olympic medalist was offered a $2,000 appearance fee for a 1985 race because it would keep her away. It was a made-for-TV race and they didn't want her in it. Narrative. I know another friend was getting $3,000 in appearance fees on the 1989 Grand Prix Circuit in Europe at 26 years old. Another friend had a three-year $150,000 contract in 1990. Then there were the under-the-table-payouts. I knew many and how a few were taken good care of while others were scraping by.

The federal tax rate in 2013 for that bracket (184k-398k) was 33%. The lower and higher bracket rates were 28% and 35% respectively. The Oregon tax rate was 9.9% for the highest bracket. If you were writing things off correctly as an llc, you should have been paying taxes closer to the high 30% range, not 50%.

No matter how fast or slow you run, please listen carefully to what Nick says here. Gross income is not net income. Expenses and taxes are very important considerations, no matter what your profession. After that, there are financial obligations that younger viewers might easily overlook. Health insurance and retirement saving are critical and well worth it, but will cut into your monthly cash flow. Spend some time learning financial basics. There is almost nothing you can do for 10 hours that is more monetarily valuable than reading a few books and/or watching a few videos to learn about finance.

Hi I’m obviously not Nic Simmons but I do live in extremely hot place so these are my thoughts. It’s about the same because if you live in a place that cold or your average times and runs will be faster with less effort meaning that you can run faster but if you run an extremely hot environments like I do then you’re training places will be affected a little bit by that and then when you go to cool environment you go faster so that negates the heat
