Interesting how things have changed over the past 40+ years. While I was a XC Skier I was sponsored by Trade Teams, much like Pro Cycling is structured. So my first contract in 1977 was with Edsbydn out of Sweden, then a disastrous 6 months with K2/Nike before they let me out my contract just before Winter Olympic Trials in 1980 then signing with Kneissl/Adidas and making the team and staying with them until I retired in 1988. Like you I had a couple awkward moments as K2 and Nike were sponsors of the 1980 Winter Olympics so I had to do promotional photos with their gear and I was supposed to wear Nike shoes around the village (but for some reason the treads came off and I used my Adidas shoes) So like you I was not directly signed to a company, but was signed to a Team the was in turn sponsored by certain suppliers. it was always fun learning all the names of the teams sponsors at preseason camps so that I could do Interviews and get their names correct. The final team I was with was shortened to Kneissl/Adidas but the official name was the Kneissl, Adidas, Exel Sylntia, Decente, Lifa/Helly Hanson, Descente, Cycles Peugeot, Subaru Ski team. No matter what the question asked I could get a few of those names into an answer.

Nick, so if I make the the USATF team I will have to wear nike clothing even if I am not sponsored by them? Can I just wear clothing with no brand, like plain sports clothing, a white tshirt and shorts and a plain sprinting spike?

Interesting fact, in my Gymshark contract (and in this new contract) I kept a carve our that my hat/headband can always be Run Gum. Even though I no longer work for the company, I am still the Founder and President of it!

what wouldve happened if you'd refused to wear the nike gear in 2012? would they have kicked you off the olympic team? i remember there was a stink about this with the first dream team - i think the USOC was sponsored by reebok but jordan and the like were of course with nike. they reached some compromise but that's Michael mf'n jordan.

It is not my focus, if it come it comes, but I primarily definitely just enjoy running and staying in shape as I age. I know Brooks is not a growth investment for Warren Bufett and Berkshire Hathaway but kinda ironic that they are getting oustpent by other shoe companies when they are actually apart of a company that has 7 times the revenue of Nike and more than all shoe companies combined

i think you should make a video about the obsessive and excessive nature of running /training life and when to set your expectations realistically... for any ex college runners / semi pros.... because its a big use of energy/time... and what to do when you can place in local/state races but nothing near professional... not even state usatf standings just state popular races... how to mitigate training addiction... but still keep some training goals... if you can even relate... bc most wont reach your level.... thats the truth.... so what do you think is good standards and how to control this life.... track clubs etc.... / what is the correct training /work/life balance do you think...
