This case is so upsetting! Being young is no excuse for killing a child. She is Guilty no matter how you look at it, if she couldn't look after the children she shouldn't have become an au pair! Ive worked as an au pair and a nanny for 4 different families and never in my right mind would I have thought to shake any of the babies or hurt them because they wouldn't stop crying or fussing and I was only 20 when I started working with them. Her age or inexperience isn't a good excuse, she's old enough to know better! She has a brain to think logically and know that no matter how annoyed or angry she was getting at the baby that she shouldn't have caused it any harm!! The fact that she went on to live a happy life and shows no remorse for what she did, (whether it was an accident or on purpose) is actually disgusting!

I agree with you 100%. Who is this agency that provides 4 days of training and sends the candidate off to care for children! BTW, AuPairs (? spelling) are usually given free room and board and a meager stipend to live on. Not a great deal. But this is horrific 😢

An existing brain injury from three weeks prior that his two doctor parents didn’t recognize no symptoms no behavioral issues the two doctors didn’t notice anything. I find it hard to believe that this child was injured three weeks before, and the parents didn’t notice. This child was not injured three weeks prior. This child was injured in the moment.

You may doubt it, but the prosecution's own evidence proved that the injury was weeks old. Gerald Feigin, the Commonwealth's medical examiner who examined Matthew, produced the photographs of the skull fracture, proving that it was weeks old. He also gave direct evidence that Matthew lacked _all_ of the characteristic signs of violent shaking. There is no doubt that Matthew's injuries were inflicted before Feb 4, so it was impossible to pin the blame for them on Woodward. Most of the prosecution's witnesses simply hadn't read the autopsy report. The ones who insisted that Matthew had been violently shaken ended up looking foolish.
@lolasbtch2216
@lolasbtch2216 Год назад
Brain injuries can go unnoticed by everyone for weeks, months, years then cause problems. It is a huge thing now in DV cases as you need an extremely specific, costly test to show the damage done, and yet most doctors deny these tests happening because there are no visible symptoms.

@@AdrianColleyI still don’t get why she was shaking the child.
@oragewoods5606
@oragewoods5606 Год назад
The results of this case are infuriating. Even IF her intention wasn't to kill him, she still did! This was a 19 year old woman, she had enough sense to know not to shake a baby. I also really struggle to believe she simply "dropped" him against the bathtub. It sounds like Matthew was crying and she just did whatever to silence him. But like I said, EVEN IF it was an accident, his life ended under her care and she didn't even get a year in jail!
@AdrianColley
@AdrianColley Год назад
The investigation of this case is also infuriating. Even if it was an accident, the available medical evidence is that it happened weeks before the Feb 4 rush to hospital, and it wasn't really feasible to say that any part of it happened on that day. But it was the only way for the prosecution to make their case against Woodward, so they ignored their own medical examiners' evidence and pressed ahead with the (disproven) theory of shaking and the also-disproven theory of a recent skull fracture. The whole thing was an indictment of the integrity of the Massachusetts criminal justice system, and I'm not at all surprised that the judge tried to draw an end to the whole thing by releasing the accused on time served.
@polynarcs
@polynarcs 7 месяцев назад
@@AdrianColley why was she shaking the baby in any case? She herself admitted to shaking the baby? Why? I wonder if people defending her would have the same opinions if this happened to their child.

I 100% agree with you re au pairs. I’m from ireland, here au pairs are generally only hired by those looking for cheap labour, au pairs are treated terribly. They’re 18 to 20 year old women who suddenly become a house mother…. And are barely paid. They are taken advantage of in many ways. Feels like it’s only a matter of time before it’s illegal in EU

This case is so horrific and never should've happened. It's obvious Louise had no business caring for infants and young children. Louise knew she was frustrated and wanted to go out and have fun, like lots of other young people. She should've gotten a regular 9-5 job that she could handle. She's 100% to blame.

@AdrianColley
@AdrianColley Год назад
It's unclear. One of the medical witnesses described it as a "green stick injury", like you'd get if you put out an arm to break your fall. The amount of healing visible on both fractures suggests that they happened around the same time (mid-January 1997), so possibly in the same incident.

I'm studying to be an English teacher in my country and the idea of an Au Pair is thaught to us as an experience for both the family and the student, you learn more about the language and experience the culture but usually you're put for a pre selection first where you meet different families and talk about your goals and what they expect, they are giving you their house and the most precious for them, their child, so you should respect their rules when it comes to timetables (always inside the humanly possible and acceptable for you as well) it's heartbreaking to hear this story, I've always seen kids as such fragile little souls with so much energy and love, i can't comprehend how so many adults put them through hell

I do agree with the judge's ruling, even though I feel terrible for the baby and his family. However the term murder means killing a person with the intention to do so, which I don't believe that this is what happened. I believe she was not fit to care for children and she caused a tragedy, a baby lost his life and an entire family has to live with it, but regardless of any emotions this is a wrongful death.

They only celebrated in England, not in Massachusetts. I grew up there and watched this trial closely .They completely vilified the parents. It was heinous. My future sister in law worked with Dr. Eappen and participates in the annual memorial fundraiser. She said both parents were the nicest, most professional people ever. Such a tragedy for Matthew and the family. This remains a very sickening case. Louise can go to hell and never be happy again..THANK you for this coverage. You really go to the heart of the issues. My thing is, Louise doesn't even seem sympathetic. Like, that quote that she's entitled to be happy and live her life, like yeah, Matthew should've been able to as well. His parents should've been able to as well. She had so many chances to get out, why didn't she? It's fine if she wanted to party or do whatever she's 19, yet she chose to take care of children, and one of them was murdered. Even if it wasn't intentionally, she still needed to take some accountability and at least see where the parents were coming from ESPECIALLY after she had her own. This case blew me.

I'm from Wales (UK, sadly), this is an awful verdict/sentencing and knowing now of the protests has shocked me! She applied for a job working with children nearly 24/7 and should have known as an adult herself the responsibility involved. It was her choice to take that job role and her choice not to leave when she realised it wasn't for her.. who has a curfew past 12 daily if you need to wake up with the kids..!?!? She clearly wasn't fulfilling her job role in a number of ways. Its sounsa like she was using the au pair scheme to have a party holiday abroad.. Regardless of age she was still an adult and you know you should never put hands on a child in frustration or anger. Saying that though "smacking" children is still legal in England and only recently made illegal in Wales. The au pair company probably didn't train her well enough but there is still a huge responsibility on her! She was directly involved in that poor babies death and deserved longer sentencing, he deserves justice.

I had the worst sinking feeling as you told the story that she’d be let go. I felt such immense relief to hear “guilty” that what came next felt crushing. Age is no excuse. SHE SOUGHT OUT a job in childcare, thus accepting the huge responsibility. A child from a very young age that babies are delicate, and can be easily hurt. I see NO excuse here and this case is just tragic. Those poor parents were essentially blamed for their own child’s death( judge stating had they of hired a more experienced nanny this might’ve not happened.) 🥹

The parents are to be blamed. They chose careers over caring for their own offspring. Being able to afford an au pair means they could have forgone an income for some time. Particularly so as the child was under 1 year old. They also didn't appropriately choose an au pair, they didn't trust her, she didn't follow their "rules" and they still didn't seek to replace her. Perhaps they didn't think their son was worth the time off while arranging for an au pair? I mean who knows what they had going through their heads but outsourcing childcare when children are infants has risks.

I just can't take the excuse of her age or lack of experience, when your responsible for a tiny life ( by your own choice) you take it seriously & get your shit together you are not allowed to take it out on children your suppose to be keeping safe because your having a bad, you don't like your job or bc you'd rather be parting! I absolutely was not expecting the outcome that came from this case. Wtf. People protesting and then celebrating her freedom after she killed a BABY?! Her going on to have a baby of her own made my stomach drop. And then the people coming for a mom who was a VICTIM. Madness.

This is a crazy case. She definitely deserved to serve some type of punishment. She killed that poor baby. I've never heard this case and you did a great job telling it and your makeup looks beautiful 😍 😘🌹🌻✨️🌺💋🤗❤️

I remember this case when it was going on. I myself was a young mother. 21 with 2 children under 2 years old. I was so pissed off she got off on this charge. Now a mother of 3 a grandmother of 2 and I can NOT fathom the depth of rage it would take to hurt any of them! Inexperienced? No. Overwhelmed? How overwhelming... just walk away for a few minutes. Literally selfish piece of crap.

I love your content! ❤️ I will say I’ve been married and a mother since 19 and I am now 21. 😂 I love babysitting and doing play dates. Being a parent is truly the best, although challenging at times! The only other thing I will say is shaken baby syndrome commonly happens under 1 because of women who experience postpartum depression/psychosis. However in this case, this wasn’t a mother. I don’t believe she meant a to kill the baby, but she had no business caring for children.

Please,please,please..have Nany Cams if anyone is watching your children!! Make sure they know their on camera. I'm sure parents don't allow people they don't trust to watch their children,but stuff like this happens all too often..even when their kids are left with people they trust. Those cameras may stop something like this happening in YOUR home,to YOUR babies..🤨

It’s honestly really disheartening to know this woman was allowed to have a child of her own after taking the life of another. She gets to watch her baby grow up, Matthew’s parents will never get to see him do the same

15:00 You've got the events of the day mixed up. Deborah Eappen handed off the kids to Woodward around 8am. Matthew was already intermittently crying by then. Woodward gave Matthew a bath because Deborah instructed her to do so (normally, Matthew's weekly bath happened on Wednesdays but his mother decided to move it). After the bath, Matthew was put down for a nap until lunchtime. After lunch he was put down for a _second_ nap. He awoke from that second nap screaming. Woodward (according to her version) tried to comfort him until she needed a bathroom break, and that's when Matthew was put down in his crib, stopped crying, and started showing unmistakable symptoms of distress.

I believe she was just immature and had obvious responsibility flaws and thought maybe being an au pair would be easy…I went for an au pair interview in London when I was 17 I knew at that point I would not be able to do what was being asked of me because of inexperience. I would say it’s a lot to do with the agency not taking her off their books as she was obviously a liability with no clue of how to run a house and look after two children. The parents should have given her a trial maybe then they would see she was not mature enough. The whole situation could’ve been avoided if they’d just let her go 🤷🏻‍♀️

I’ve been nannying for 2 years i’ll be 20 in a couple months. I agree trusting someone younger with kids can be scary. I think you really have to enjoy working with kids to have that type of job or else it’s too stressful and leads to cases just like this!

I’m with you I would have never allowed this girl to babysit my kids . She had no experience, was too immature , and just wanted a free ride to the U.S so she could kick it. I definitely think a child under her care would be in danger and the agency was wrong for even getting people like this and basically no training . The families had a right to create rules for their home , she was there to work not to go kick it .

Quite some vicious people out there pretending to be a fit for the job on the surface, which makes it difficult to entrust your beloved ones under the care of strangers. If someone cannot handle the job and only wanna have fun, then he/she should immediately quit and leave the poor family alone but she just took advantage of this job for the money paid and the free housing and the stuff to.supoort her own desire for fun overseas experience as if the family owes it to her, and the life of poor little Mattew had to be lost in.such a horrific way. Sweet and cute baby Mattew, you will be remembered for ever by everyone.with a kind heart!

No one should be asking where the mother was, they certainly aren't asking where the father was. This was one person's fault alone. The nanny.

It is DIAGUSTING, that Deborah was blamed for the death of her child! Are we supposed to educate ourselves to be a stay at home mom? Is being a homemaker the title that fits us females after we’ve had a child? Disgusting that society would shame the mom for being a professional working mom who employed someone to take care of her kids at home.

I bet the phone call saying had to do with long-distance calling. Back then we didn’t have cell phones and if you did a long-distance call was very expensive. Landline long-distance calls were ridiculously expensive. 5 to 10 minutes would cost probably over $100.

The idea that someone would toss or drop a baby bc they’re frustrated is craziness. Many times I’ve laid them in their bed and walked away. Step outside, take a moment. You don’t shake or toss them.

So I’ve been an AuPair 3 x (America, Netherlands, America) and the requirements are very different now. You have to have a ton of documented experience, you work 45 hours a week, live with the family and you form a strong bond with the kids. There’s a lot wrong with the program but also a lot right with it.

This family gave her way too many chances to the point that it ended in tragedy. It doesn’t sound like she was ready for such responsibilities. If she wanted to live the party lifestyle she just needed a different type of job, not being a living nanny. Their house rules set for their living in their house employees should be followed as set of not then she needed to find a different job!

The judge saw the same evidence as the jury did, and he knew it couldn't possibly support a murder charge. He also knew that the withholding of autopsy evidence (namely the right-side dura sample and the photographs of the skull fracture) would definitely give rise to an appeal, which would be embarrassing for the state justice system. I think he was doing what he could to discourage both sides from filing appeals in that embarrassing case. (It didn't work, they both appealed.)

Having kids around same age makes it so hard for you as a crime documentary creator and for us moms of small lil ones like this. God, parents be aware who you’re letting your kids in the care of just to save some money, no blame on the victims but we can always learn a lesson from stories around

Right after high school I actually became a nanny for 4 very established families and was still able to live my life. It was definitely a rewarding experience watching the children grow and learn and then being able to live my life the way I wanted. But I’ve also knew I’ve wanted to work with kids since grade school. She should’ve just applied to go to school in the United States and the agency should’ve definitely provided her with more training and checking in with the families instead of just allowing her to change

I have to agree that while so many threw sympathy at the Nanny, everyone forgot Matthew and essentially laid the blame on the mom for daring to have a career. We still have not gotten past the whole male dominated world where the little woman stays home content to be a second class citizen. Look at the recent Supreme Court decision where the 50 year old right for a woman to have an abortion was taken away and now we have the old white conservative men in state houses practicing medicine without a license and out to punish a woman for daring to have sex instead of being pure and pristine. How dare women feel they have rights. This case always bothered me. It felt like the parents were non factors as well as the baby. They just did not matter

16:50 "While he's at the hospital being examined, the doctors realise that baby Matthew's injuries are far more severe than a baby who might have choked on his own vomit. Matthew had a two-and-a-half-inch crack in his skull and his retinas were bleeding." What the doctors were aware of was Matthews coma, subdural haemorrhage, and retinal haemorrhage (the "triad"), which indicated head trauma with a poor prognosis for recovery. But they _didn't_ know about Matthew's skull fracture until much later. They had an x-ray machine but they didn't use it because they thought the CT scan was enough (and it wasn't). They misdiagnosed Matthew as suffering from "shaken baby syndrome", and they continued to believe that until the autopsy ruled it out.
