The MOST OVERHYPED Characters in Naruto 

Edo Itachi sealing Nagato in the gourd is probably one of the most cruel things that has ever happened in Naruto. Nagato was ripped out of the pure lands against his will, forced to fight against Naruto, B, and Itachi, and then his soul is damned to the land of drunken dreams forever. And so was the sacrifice used to bring Nagato back. And now since Itachi is back in the pure lands, he can't even release him from the gourd, so Nagato is stuck there. Forever.

Kishimoto got so stuck on the Sharingan and tailed beast he forgot about all the other strengths in his story

Shisui only had 2 panels in the Manga and is already one of the most popular characters in Naruto.

shikamaru is definitely one of the smartest characters, that doesn’t necessarily mean he could beat everyone in a fight. what comes with intelligence is knowing what fights you can and can’t win and what you need to win them. shikamaru has always been more of a threat in the role of a tactician or leader than a warrior. which is why i think he was the perfect option for leading the retrieval mission

It's crazy to me that we could've had an actual one shot specifically about Sakumo and got to learn a lot about him but now we may never get that.

A healthy Kimimaro, at the point he was in the story would be a menace. His taijutsu and durability alone would make him a threat to most ninja. He got completely parked when village ninjas started walking around in chakra mechs and manipulate dimensions. For his time though, a beast for sure.

Most people dont think shikamaru is crazy strong. But the reason people love him is because he is so real. 1. One of the few people who didnt judge naruto jist because of others. 2. He avenged his sensei. 3. He was able to keep the team together and encourage choji to fight. And last, the one i ride on thr MOST. 4. Just imagine...your sensei already died, and your father, the man who comforted you, loved you, taught you to think for yourself has died. And you could see the massive explosion that killed you and your friends fathers. Because youre fight in A WARRRR, you were dragged in. And instead of falling to his knees and crying like he did with asuma...my man looks at his friends..looks at ino, and my man straight up says no time to grieve, save youe tears for later we got a mf JOB TO FINISH. and he is on GO MODE. Shikamaru isn't loved because hes strong, he is loved because hes not strong but still shows up, and gone show out.

The problem with Kakuzu and Kimimaro is that they were set up to be something but never did anything with it in the story.

"Further advanced his medical ninjutsu knowledge" is a fancy way of saying Kabuto did a ton of human experimentation before turning the chakra scalpel on himself.

Regarding the shikamaru novels... didnt it state that because he spent so much time behind a desk that his skill in ninjutsu has deteriorated. He was essentially weaker than his war arc self.

While I agree immensely about the sannin NOT being in their prime back during the 2nd war, I think there may be severe translation confusion about Sakumo. If you check the manga translation, it only says he had respect on the same level as the sannin. In both dub and sub on Hulu, Minato is referencing the “sannin” title as paling in comparison to the “white fang” title. So ultimately, Minato is only referencing titles. Not raw power. So Minato never says Sakumo could take all 3 Sannin in a fight. I think people take that translation too far to hype Sakumo for more than what he is. Additionally, the Sannin during the 2nd war were probably closer to Kakashi/Gai/Kabuto level. They each definitely got way stronger as they grew older. Tsunade didn’t have Mitonic regeneration. Orochimaru didn’t have reanimation, forbidden jutsu, and his mutant snake abilities. Jiraiya didn’t know the Rasengan or vast knowledge of ninjutsu.

My list would be 1. Shisui- He is literally just a plot device for Itachi's story more than anything 2. Tobirama- He has some cool aspects about him but we barely learn anything about him 3. Fugagku- Barely has any feats and again, don't know anything about him but he has a lot of fans for some reason. 4. Sakumo- Literally all of his hype is based on 1 statement of him being stronger than Sanin I disagree with Shikamaru on this list because I don't think he is massively overscaled by most people, everyone just likes him because he is the only one of the side characters in the Konoha 12 who gets any character development after part 1 LOL

"Bones won't stop you from being buried by Earth Release." Tell that to Gaara, because Kimimaro was buried by his sand--which while yes is Magnet Release and not Earth release--for the sake of physics, its effectively Earth Release. Kimimaro was able to survive and escape. So...yeah his bones indeed will stop him from being buried by Earth Release, or at least make him able to survive and escape it.

Are we all forgetting my guy kimimaru and how he basically did what garra did during their fight…and completely changed the landscape. Like that bone field attack was terrifying, just as scary as garras sand burials

I'm impressed how Sakumo managed to make a name for himself despite coming from an ordinary clan/family with no famous sensei.

I wanna take a second to talk about UNDERHYPED characters. My personal favorite being Asuma Sarutobi. He’s arguably one of the best original senseis and he was also probably one of the least focused one characters like Neji and Rock Lee

Shikamaru is my favorite character because while he is smart af he is also not very strong compared to other characters and he is also flawed in many ways. In my opinion him having these issues but also being a badass is what makes him such a good character.

Yeah kimi falls into the itachi sickness that fight with garra and Lee was him getting off his death bed for one last fight. That is fucking insane. Imagine him healthy and allowed to grow beyond a teenager.

Totally agree that Shikamaru is an incredibly intelligent strategist, but also definitely agree with him being hyped up too much. It's similar to how people are always like, "Batman can beat anyone as long as he has enough prep time." No actually, they can't just beat literally anyone no matter how much prep time they have.

I will say that while Kimimaro is overhyped at times, I would still say it is justified and that he would have been quite a bit stronger if he wasn’t sick. First of all we do have a lot of statements about his prowess that put him at the very least around high Jonin characters like Kabuto or Kakashi. First we are shown that he was involved in the plot to assassinate the fourth Kazekage, fighting alongside Orochimaru and Kabuto. This version of Kimimaro would have still been weakened by his illness as he immediately collapses after the fight, showing that even in that state he was still capable of fighting kage level shinobis. Later in the show we are told by Kabuto that if Kimimaro wasn’t sick then he and Orochimaru could’ve easily defeated Hiruzen. This implies that 1)Kimimaro was as strong if not stronger than Kabuto as Kabuto didn’t try to help Orochimaru against Hiruzen and 2)he can engage characters with more than taijutsu as Hiruzen has a mastery over the 5 chakra natures. Since Kabuto was stated to be equal to Kakashi then it is safe to asume that Kimimaro is as at least as strong if not stronger than part one Kakashi without his illness. This is not the only showcase of his power in the manga as an edo Kimimaro is shown holding his ground against a clone of KCM Naruto who holds enough power to fight and even defeat kage level characters. I don’t want to get into too much speculation of how strong this Kimimaro it but it is really impressive that he not only fought this naruto but also just lasted long enough to not be sealed until Itachi released the edo tensei. This shows that the illness that he sustained against Gaara and Lee was really affecting his ability to fight and that he was no where near his full power during that fight. After all Kabuto did say that Kimimaro shouldn’t be able to move, much less fight in the state that he was in.

I think the itachi thing is the one shotting. 13 year old itachi one shots Orochimaru shown to beat kage, new resurrection Orochi gets one shouted by the super special god weapons, Nagato the same and the kabuto after him. It’s aggravating him not having peers and not having full struggle fights.

What I think about Kakuzu is that he might have nerved himself and hasn't used Earth Grudge Fear to it's fullest potential. If he can reattach limbs and Hidans head he should've been capable to snatch atleast one Sharigan or other ocular jutsu in his really long life and just plucked it in. Considering Rin implanted obitos eye in Kakashi almost like it was nothing this should've worked ... I think. The other thought that I had was why limit yourself to the basic 5 elements. He should've been strong enough to kill a couple Kekkei Genkai users and steal their hearts giving him their Kekkei Genkai. Go into the Land of Water find a Yuki clan member kill them steal their heart, now he should have Ice release as his ability to create the mask is limited only by the nature of his victims heart. Like he could have had one Sharingan, one Byakugan, Ice Release, Mud Release, Lava Release, Boil Release and Earth Release. This Kakuzu would've been an absolute menace. This obviously only works if his puppets aren't tied to the basic elements but since that was never stated I think he was just stupid.

34:53 Tsunade got her Byakugo seal before the begining of part 1. The 3 sannin that stalemated Hanzo and are stated to be weaker than Sakumo were not in their peak. Sakumo should be kage level due to the statements, he should be around the same level as Hanzo, who was the leader of a village and was fairly strong since he fought Prime Chiyo and his word made 3 randoms feared worldwide. No feats tho, which i hate.

Okay, hear me out: Itachi's Susanoo was the first mention of Susanoo we saw in the story. Maybe it's not "incomplete" but just "enough for the task"? I don't think the author already planned for complete and winged and sparkly Susanoos yet by that time.

Over hyped or not. It never made sense to me that one (excluding Obito) person can kill the entire Uchiha clan. I know Itachi is extremely strong but the Uchiha clan is not a push over. A battle like that....at very least Itachi should have some scars.

Everything you said about Itachi when you where explaining how powerful Kabuto is was the most Based accurate depiction/description I've ever heard. I've been sub-ed for a hand full of months and i gotta give you credit. This channel is the only one i trust when it comes to Naruto lore i don't already know. You truly deserve all of the good fortune you've acquired. Seriously im a super weeb and im very critical of any content creator (not to say i am into putting people down or do so regularly or anything even in that wheel house). But with that being said even though im not hyper critical of content i think/know is incorrect i want to whole heartedly take that energy that could have been spent negatively and use it to build you up. I genuinely love this channel with all my heart and truly hope one day i get to shake your hand. You've inspired me to speak my mind more candidly and be truly honest with what i think and how i feel not only in anime with cookie cutter details that dont really mean anything in the grand scheme of what said show is trying to depict, but also in everyday human interaction. I'd much rather be seen as rude or alittle harsh for sharing my real/honest point of view then to pander in a disingenuous way. its something i try to inpire in others that are tired of the status quo and going with the flow. I only agree that Shikamaru is over hyped if anyone is crazy enough to believe he alone wins any fights. No, what Shikamaru has is strategy, he personally doesn't need to win any fight aside from his revenge on Hidan, he just needs to ensure the win conditions with the least amount of casualties on his side, and THAT is what he delivers on in every fight he's in. He doesn't have to win, he just has to achieve the best possible outcome, which, he arguably does in every single battle he's in, even the times he got saved by someone he wasn't even expecting, because of his stall tactics, and because he managed to catch his enemies off guard, and because he was able to trap people exactly as he planned, he managed to hold off until reinforcements arrived. It's important to consider, Village Shinobi are not Freelance Mercenaries, they are soldiers. No one is going to complain that a battle in a war was won only because the winning side received reinforcements, like... duh? What kind of wars are you fighting where you want to win and yet you don't use your troops in the best possible distribution? It's poignant to bring up him catching all the Kage off guard because even though he's in no position to threaten them, he doesn't need to be, he's the strategist. If your plan is to lure an enemy somewhere they can be bombed or sniped, it doesn't matter if you yourself are not the one doing the bombing or sniping, as long as you got the enemy where you needed them to be. It's actually embarrassing that the Kage could let their guard down and got ambushed by such an obvious one-trick pony, because even if they could break out or not, the instant they got captured meant they were vulnerable. So, I kind of agree and disagree that he is over hyped. I guess it makes sense why he is on the bottom of the list of dishonorable, but realistically, no one is saying Shikamaru solos Kaguya with prep time. Sure, realistically he COULD have helped give the same exposition and observation every other character gave in the Kaguya fight, but he didn't need to be there, and he wasn't going to influence the fight at all. Now, BECAUSE unfortunately there are people who DO believe Shikamaru solos Kaguya with prep time and like Choji's food pills or Naruto 1 tails cloak buff or something ridiculous like that, then yeah, he is over hyped by people who don't understand the nuance of his character.

I still stand by Shikamaru, but less as a "best brain best boy" sort of thing and more as an "underdog using his wits to overcome unfavorable odds". Not impossible odds. The fact that his scope is fairly grounded is actually part of his appeal for me, partially because I liked Naruto better before everybody was a super wizard who could also punch good.

Shikimaru made sense due to the fact Gaara can do what he can do with shadows with sand. So no range limits, no ironic weakness at night. Ino and Choji got WAY more powerful with their skill set yet he got weaker. He's smart yet even that's now suspect.

The sad thing is: Sakumo Hatake was supposedly strong enough to make the Sannin look weak, and we never got to see it.

All I'll say about Madara Vs Kaguya is that in the Databook description for Aminomanaka, it states that the amount of chakra required to perform the Aminomanaka Jutsu is so much that only Kaguya had enough chakra to use it, meaning Madara even if he has access to it does not have the chakra capacity to use it, so exactly what would Madara do when Kaguya switches him to another dimension, like the acid dimension.

Kimimaru's power essentially depends if he would eventually gain access to the All-Killing Ash Bones, as his technique is descended from Kaguya, and she's the only other person with his technique. If he could eventually have unlocked it he becomes a massive threat, if not he would have remained roughly where he was.

Kakazu I main problem is the arbitrary limit of hearts he can have and that he was not allowed to actually show off multiple jutsu from each element and the interesting combos they could have done. He has that 1 real fight did not showcase all of my abilities the way the longer fight with say Sasori did which is a scheduling editing problem in the anime industry.

Not saying Sakomo is like Otsotsuki level in power or anything, but in defense of him, even though they’re comparing him to the sannin before they were at their peak, it is also said that the sannin become twice (or maybe three times? Can’t remember) as skilled when they’re working together, and considering the fact that they very explicitly use the terms “Three Sannin Combined”, I have to imagine that Sakomo was probably as strong as our current Kakashi. And that’s *really* strong.

I find the Nagato and Kakuzu being similar argument to be very funny. “There are more than 1 so therefor same” as if shooting fire and other elemental releases from the ads is the same as bringing people back from the dead, summoning huge creatures, almighty push etc

Shikamaru is definitely my favorite character but I'm not by any means under any illusions that he's a particularly strong character ability wise. He's just an awesome character with cool personality and abilities. Power scaling has nothing to do with my love for this character so for me I don't think he's overhyped at least by me. I can see how obnoxious some fans are, but that cool because Shikamaru is a dope character and he deserves the love.

in my opinion rock lee was wayyyyyy over hyped just to get thrown in the trash, during the chunin exam he was said to be able to beat sasuke(with curse mark), and since he was held back his team should've plowed though Naruto, but they don't. He is said to have the mystical power of the lotus 8 gates but his skills seem trivial, as he even loses to gara. (I under stand why). But then later all he does is take L. Loses to Kimimaro, doesn't get screen time, might Gai does most of the work in kisame/akastuki fights, and his potential as a "taijutsui master that can't do ninjutsu" is thrown away as the moral of the neji vs Naruto fight its basically it doesn't matter about ur strength etc. But that idea is thrown away when rock lee shows up. Might Gai and his father dai both have incredible 8-gates strength they go against Madara and the 7 swordsmen of the mist. But then the 8-gates potential is forgotten when the power leveling gets to insane.

Itachi is just too much hyped for sure i mean he just win every single polls irrespective of whatever is asked 😂

Orochimaru was introduced to Kabuto by Sasori, who originally had him as a spy before Orochimaru turned him. So, at some point before Orochimaru, but after his time in the Root Kabuto was working for Sasori in the Akatsuki. I'm not sure how it's possible 19 year old Kabuto has been in no less than 3 top secret organizations as well as spied on all 5 great nations, but he did.

About Kimimaro, let's remember that during his fight against Gaara and Lee, he was supposed to be confined to bed to the point where he should not have been able to move but he stands up thanks to his strong will (it's like Lee when he stand up while being unconscious in his fight against Gaara) meaning his power level against them was INSANELY lower than what he would have been healthy.

I actually thought Fugaku would be on the list. I've heard a lot of people say he would beat Minato in a fight which is crazy because from what was said and shown, Minato stomps him easily

I agree and don't with your Shikamaru point. Like, that "Give them prep time" is why I hate the Batman arguments, but Shikamaru was able to shadow choke hold all the Kage, even for a little bit. Naruto and Gara were able to break out relatively quick, but both of those are also disgusting, he did hold the other 3 Kage though. Likely he was too tired after holding them, which is why he couldn't break the tree.

Most of the time id agree with everone here. But lets talk about Kimimaru. He was a taijutsu kenjitsu specialist with a kekkei genkai. He was 15 years old. He had a curse mark that he could take to level 2. He had Orochinaru teaining him to be his perfect vessel.who does that sound wayyyyy too familiar to? Our boy Sasuke. Had Kimimaru been healthy, he wouldve trained under Orochinaru with Sasuke. Sasuke uaed fire and lightning. Who's to say kimimaru wouldnt have had an affinity for earth and lighting release. Sasuke would have been his rival that Orochimaru favored andnwanted his body wvwn though kimimaru was willing to give him his. I really think he wouldve been equal to Sasuke at the start of Shippiuden. Then when sasuke unlocks MS, Kimimaru would have to try and find a way to upgrade his bone ability to try to equal Sasuke. If you wanna stop there, then whatever but i think the pre MS Sasuke is plenty powerful for the story up to that point. And if he upgrades and unlocks other abilities or some big brain way of using it, who knows how atrong he couldve become. I mean come on, his ability is one that Kaguya even used and effectively. Would love your thoughts on a story of if Kimimaru didnt die, reversed his sickness or whatever, and basically became Sasuke's rival.

Given a bit of prep shikamaru cant just beat anybody. But he can figure out how pretty much anybody can be beaten.

Didn't Edo Kimimaro survive an extended fight with a KCM 1 Naruto Shadow Clone in the War Arc? Idk I feel like if Itachi got stronger as an Edo, the same would apply to Kimimaro. Like obviously he's not like Nagoto making the real Naruto look like little bro but even with his ninjutsu weaknesses, I feel like a fight with a healthy Kimimaro in the Kage Summit arc would have been cool to watch

This is why the top 100 was a terrible idea since people were just gonna pick their favorite character instead of actually picking someone like Sakumo who NEEDED a manga to flesh out the world and the war which frankly, we haven't seen enough of

I love Shikamaru. He's my favorite character. That said, I'll never buy a prep time power argument. It's an argument based around the fact that you need a trick or trap to overcome being weaker. It's cool that you can, but someone adaptable or unseen external events put you back to square one.

Shikamaru was able to restrain all of them, even Naruto. Naruto was stated to only be able to get out of it due to Kurama (as always). Shikamaru was able to restrain limited Code and Kawaki, both stronger than Kuramaless Naruto.

Good arguments for their strenghts but hype doesn't only come from strenght - it's mostly their character, their choices and interactions and many other facettes like their vibe, their appearance, their voice, their backstory and so much more. 😊

1. Itachi, while his character is cool I heavily disagree that he could have gone anywhere in terms of power. He has the brains but he doesn’t have much stamina to fight, and we don’t know the true extent of how badly he’s affected by his illness. I also think that his susanoo would just be the same as EMS sasuke’s since iirc sasuke lost his crossbow when he got the perfect susanoo anyway 2. Madara. Specifically 3 eye Madara. He is straight up featless aside from the infinite tsukuyomi, and he was heavily implied to lack the chakra to dimension hop like kaguya, and he never had any feats or statements of his power when he got the third eye, people just assume it’s a 10000% amp 3. Kakuzu. His sheer raw durability can solo the akatsuki 4. Might guy, specifically the eighth gate, I always see people that think he could beat dms kakashi but that’s just not happening 5. Minato, but his gap in terms of overrated is pretty spaced out from guy. People tend to overrate how smart he is since we’ve seen other people do what he did too, 2 of them being nobodies that are danzo’s guards that quickly found out a counter to kamui, and even boruto a 11-12 year old not only learned rasengan in a day but also accidentally did something that minato could never do, and then he proceeded to make 2 more rasengan variants, totaling 4 if we count the basic rasengan, or even 6 if we count momoshiki taking over his body and using rasenDan or some massive rasengan

Few inaccuracies here, esp re: body flicker. The technique itself doesn't allow you to leave after images, it's just a movement technique. Shisui's mastery and talent is such that he specifically manifested after images when he moved

Darui may arguably also be “smarter” than shikamaru he’s capable of figuring out his most used word and second most used word to switch them out and stop himself from being absorbed by the six path tools used by kinkagu ginkaku and then seal them both in return that intelligence feat is honestly incredible cause it happens in the middle of the biggest war they’ve seen so having that tier of level headedness to even make that plan and then execute it places his intelligence on another level for me

Are we not going to talk about how Madaras plan wasn't his, but Black Zetsus? Yes, he told Obito to bring him back, but Obito went a different direction. And I believe it was Black Zetsu that "gave" Kabuto the idea where Madara was, surprising Obito.

the problem with everyone on this list, aside from Shikamaru, is that none of them were around for the War Arc power cliffing that happened. Kakauzu being sent to assassinate Hashirama at the time was a feat. until Hashi exploded in unimaginable power and that line no longer made sense. Sakumo would be a similar situation. statements made before the power scaling was beyond broken. Though Kimimaro was one of the last people to be sealed that we saw, so thats a testament to his strength. either through speed or durability or skill, he had to have been dodging range based attacks and such. The thing about Shisui is his age. He was doing Body Flicker at a proficiency few could do, and he was a kid doing it. Itachi wasn't doing it, and we saw how strong he ended up being. so its head cannon sure, but you take a feat like that and scale it and you can assume he would have been right up there on Itachi's level at least.

I think one thing that adds on to Sakimo not being a complete god is that if he was then he probably wouldn’t have had to choose between his comrades and the mission.

bruh, if Kimimaro wasn't sick/dead in OG he'd of had time to train just like everybody else. The "one trick pony" thing is also pretty misleading since he's basically just a spiky A, but with ranged attacks. The only problem is that Gaara could mostly ignore those ranged attacks. On the whole "that was his peak" that doesn't make since either, His bones were already crunchy looking and turned to dust from Gaaras sand shield, Also the further he went with the curse mark the slower and sloppier he got.
