Thanks for reviewing my gun! I love mine in 7mm Rem Mag. I'm a new shooter but my friend helped me with load dev, and he said as much about the mag, tons of space. It shoots every ammo I've thrown at it and has never failed in any way. That's why I bought it as my first gun, I'm 40 and I don't need an awkward beginner stage using 400$ guns, buy once, cry once.

By far my favorite rifle. The price for what you get is amazing. A flawless working action with a chassis / stock hybrid, a magazine which functions just as smoothly as the action. My con and maybe another reason it's overlooked is it feels plasticky. Also I wanted to test the Sako cold hammer forged barrel claim about no barrel break in needed. During the first 10 days I shot 20 rounds per day with no cleaning in between. My group size and point of impact did not change. I will never buy another brand again.

GREAT REVIEW!! I bought a plain Sako synthetic in .270, 14 years ago. I used 8-10 shots to sight in, then shot a 5 shot group I could cover with a nickel(100yds). It has made trips to Kansas & back to Alabama a few times, and is my main rifle in Alabama. Each buck I've shot died quickly, if not in it's tracks. The amazing thing is that I have NEVER had to adjust the scope! Ever! (Nikon Monarch 3.5-10). It has held perfect zero all these years. I am still impressed with it, But! This S20 set-up has my buying trigger finger itching!!😅

One of the first times I took my SAKO S20 6.5 PRC to the range I shot a 3/4” group at 300 yards with factory Hornady Precision Hunter 143gr ELD-X loads. With my reloads (142gr Nosler ABLR) I am averaging 1/2” to 5/8” groups at 100 yards all day long. This gun is remarkable for the price point-just remarkable. I really like the Sako S20. I grew up varmint hunting with my dad with a Sako. But, my son is left handed, and I want us to be able to share rifles. We have 4 Tikka rifles. A 17 HMR, a 300 Win Mag, a 308, and a 270. The 308 is left handed. The 17 used to be left handed, but we returned it and ended up with a right handed one. The first 17 suffered a catastrophic failure, probably due to factory ammo that was loaded way too hot. I cronoed it at over 3000 fps. Surprisingly, Tikka did not honor their warranty, but the gun store did. We bought a lot of our guns around the same time after moving back to the US. Our big bore Tikkas all have metal bottom metal, magazines (including larger capacity ones), bolt shrouds, steel recoil lugs (they are all T3X), and picatinny rails. All the custom stuff is from mountain Tactical and works great. The picatinny rail on the 300 win mag is also custom machined to get perfect eye placement on the 2.5-20 x 50 Night Force scope. All the scopes can handle high ring torques. The NightForce rings are torqued to 35 pounds. The picatinny rails are torqued to 35 pounds. (if you go much higher the screw heads might twist off (Don't ask me how I know this!). The ring bases are torqued to the Pic rails at 50 pounds. The action screws are torqued to 56 pounds ( that is as high as my torque wrench goes). Nothing will rattle loose. They have been like this for years. They are all well sub MOA. The 300 Win Mag has thousands of rounds of factory Terminal Ascent through it (Yes, that costed way more than the rifle) and is still sub MOA. I will put a new barrel on it some time. The 308 and 270 also have something over a thousand Terminal Ascent put through them. I have always had a supply of Terminal Ascent and have kept track of its avilibility since it first came out. I think it is the best. The 308 and 270 are Cabelas special editions so have camo stocks, the 300 is a Veil Alpine. I have tried the vertical grip inserts but we do not prefer them. We think that from a rest it doesn't make much difference, and the traditional grips are much better for off hand. I had at first considered getteng different stocks, but there was always something that did not suite me perfectly about the available stocks. We prefer a more tradional hunting rifle anyway so we are keeping the original stocks, which have served us very well. Accuracy is priority number one for us, and no matter what we spend, we would probably never get more accurate rifles, especially the 300 which is just ridiculous. The actions are all so smooth they almost run themselves. For some reason it seems like the 300 is extra special.

Thanks for vindicating my purchase of about a year ago. I got the same model, 6.5 PRC in the S20 Hunter, factory cerakoted. I'm a new hunter and got my first whitetail last fall with it. Otherwise it's flawless. Cheers!

Great video! Thank you for feeding my confirmation bias! I bought one in 300 Win Mag at the advise of a friend. I already had a Tikka in 6.5CM that I really liked. Love that action! I wanted a larger caliber for bigger game, but I was honestly a bit intimidated about the recoil, after shooting a friend's 7mm Rem Mag with no muzzle devise. With a good compensator or suppressor, the Sako S20 in 300 WM is quite tame. I can shoot it all day long without the abuse. Very impressed with the accuracy. It's certainly more accurate than I am.

I have a Sako S20 in 7RM and absolutely LOVE the rifle! I have consistently shot sub-0.5MOA all the way out to 300 yds (longest range I've had available). I did put a muzzle brake on my 7RM, which has not only reduced the recoil but has not affected the accuracy! The slightly heavier rifle has not been a concern for me, as I think that little bit of weight enhances the overall shootability of the rilfle.

Hey! You're reviewing my rifle! I picked up a Sako S20 Hunter recently, chambered in 6.5PRC with the 24.4" fluted barrel. I love it! Your description of the action, feeding and ease of use is absolutely spot on - I have a semi-custom 30-06 based on a Borden Timberline action, and the S20 feeds better, doesn't jam-feed if loaded slow (the Borden really needs to be slammed home or it sticks/misfeeds) and the Sako safety is fantastic. I like the ability to lock the bolt - ensures it won't open even slightly when going through brush The option to unlock the bolt and clear the chamber is a great safety featture The "fire" indicator is in the right position to be seen at all times, even when you're behind the scope I wish all my rifles had a similar safety mechanism. My old Mauser-actioned Parker-Hale .375H&H has a three-position safety, but the Sako version is slicker and arguably "safer". You can't unintentionally knock the saftey past safe with unlocked bolt like you can with the Mauser safety - the Mauser safety will go all the way from safe to fire if you push it just a little bit too hard. Easy to do when your hands are cold or if you're wearing gloves. I live in the UK, so acquiring new rifles is a slow, complex & heavily bureaucratic process otherwise I'd buy myself another couple of S20's in other chamberings. The 6.5PRC is just about perfect for UK deer-hunting though, so I'll happily stick with that for now Another great video from Backfire - please keep them coming

I have found my Tikka Tx .243 shoots very close to this when I do my part. You can sometimes come across an off the shelf rifle that shoots almost everything good and somethings excellent. While rare, they do exist. Back in the 90's I went through several factory rifles, with factory ammo looking for that shooter. Something I found was in every shooter I came across, which weren't a lot was the firing pin strike on the primer was dead center and exactlly the same every time, (comparing spent rounds and primer strike) Coincidence? I don't really believe in coincidence any longer. This wasn't just in centerfire rifles but the handguns I found to be most accurate also. Maybe it was just me believing this but it was something I initially noticed by accident. I wasn't as knowledgeable about weapons at the time. Still no pro but I am experienced. Edit: With all that said the most accurate rifle I have owned to date was a Sako action custom build .22ppc.

I have been shooting the sako S20 in 300 win mag with great accuracy. A very unique adjustment of the trigger pull 1/2 inches forward and backwards in the action. the rifle will fit every person, short stature to Russians with 15 inch plus trigger length pull. sako S20 accuracy standards are 5 shot group, (not three) in under an inch group @ 100 yards. the weight of the rifle being slightly heavy, is not a bad thing in the 300 win mag with a break. the magazines are crazy cheap like $30. was told that sako spent a ton of money and time on the research of the sako S20 which had a lot to so with the sako 90. amazing new technology !

Great Rifle, well deserving of some LOVE with all of the features it has. The Precision Stock can be outfitted with an ARCA(need the right length and some creative thinking) and picatinny rail with the M-lok slots on the bottom. With my addition of the ARCA plate this rifle ticks all of the boxes I was looking for(QD cups, Adjustable length of pull and comb, threaded muzzle for a CAN, integrated scope mounting, cerakote finish). Only gripe is the aesthetics, and make sure the stock/action screws are torqued before a hunt or range session.

Off topic but: For years I've stuck to 300win, 30-06 or 308 win (270, 338 wm are there too) because those were the cartridges you could find on the shelf or borrow off somebody anywhere in the US or Canada when you left yours at home or West Jet didn't bother to bring your bags to the hunt. But now, after the ammo shortages, is that still true? Does the little hardware store in Jewel, Kansas or nowhere, Manitoba still have those or did they restock with creeds and 300 prc?

Agree on the feeding principle. I also use this when choosing cartrigde. The new «straight» cartrigdes like the 300wsm are not good for reliability. The 6,5x55 and 3006 are much better for hunting with their more cone design. Also, the systems where you safely can have a cartrigde in the chamber, like the Blaser R8, is soo much better for hunting. No making noise and getting stressed out loading the rifle.

Got a 6.5 that I got both stocks with when I bought it new as Sako was offering that incentive. I can switch stocks, zero and precision stays. I’m shooting in 3s with handloads. 4s and 5s with factory loaded ammo. It hates ELDMs is all but I hate Hornady so that works out. It shoots the 156 EOL crazy well. It’s a TRG style chassis. If you know you know. Oh and I paid 1299.99 plus tax. Two mulies I shot with it, one at 92 yards and another at 692 yards. That 156 did exactly what it was designed to do.

The S20 is perfectly suited for 300WM and 7RM. The extra weight in those chamberings is an asset. A perfect rifle for anyone who wants unimpeachable quality right out of the box with no interest in after market upgrades or modifications. My Sako A7 desperately needed an after market stock to realize its potential. The S20, though not a budget rifle, is a very high value pick compared to its competition. The Sako 90 is prohibitively expensive for most people… it’s pushing into semi-custom cost territory.

Still early on shooting my AR, but I did five shots barely in the head zone at 150 yards. So that's gotta be like 3 MOA or something and I was so excited. I am upgrading the trigger, optic, and barrel, but that was all planned from the beginning. I'll keep working and get sub 2 MOA soon!

Depending on the ammunition your shooting 3moa may be all you get, the cheap 55 grain target ammunition is frequently 2-3moa. I’m always for upgrades but if you’re on a budget making sure it’s not an ammunition issue first can save you some money.

My 1/7 HK and Lothar barrels have done overall very well with 55s. Overstability is not a problem, just that the bullet defects pronounce in high tw barrels. But it is mere percents up to 10% which is not much, since the crappiest bullets shoot bad anyways. Bulk ammo (Norma, Geco, GGG, SB, etc.) all shoot 1.3 to 1.8moa average 5 shot groups. Just test which ammo your gun likes and buy a lot.

9/10. Adjustable check price, adjustable LOP, chassis. Everything about this gun is great, except for one small thing. The magazine rattles inside the stock. It's annoying. Wrap it with some electrical tape or hockey tape and it goes away. That's the only small issue. They also offer it in a ton of calibers, not your typical 308, creed, 6.5prc.

I have always been confused about your concern with feeding the gun before you shoot. I live in Kentucky and a Marine that spent my whole life hunting and shooting guns.We simply load a round and put firearm on safety before entering the hunt area or hot zone. Is it your local laws that require waiting till you are ready to shoot to chamber a round?

Great review as always. One note: the Weatherby Vanguard is not really in the same price range, you showed it on the graphic regarding weight. Vanguards are easy to find well under $1000 the street price on the Sako 20 is almost $1300. Not to take away anything from its value or performance, clearly it is worth every penny and maybe more. Loading the S20 with a hotter and heavier cartridge, the extra weight might be appreciated with .300 Win Mag, 30 PRC, etc.

As an owner of several Tikkas, I have regretfully been quite disappointed with the Sako S20. I found that when I adjust the trigger to 2.5 lbs or less, the cocking mechanism will not catch resulting is very dangerous slam fire situation when cycling the action. Support from Beretta for this issue was nonexistent.

Yes the problem with sakos is that they chew up all the money for the scope and rings. With the Tikka you can get all of it. I believe they use the same barrels from their own factory. And the aftermarket possibilities for the Tikka t3x is sooo much bigger. So in the end my Sako 85 may be cheaper than my T3x 😅

I just went to check out the S20, and it looked great, felt amazing, but for some very odd reason, the butt stock is very short. I mean when I measure the butt stock from elbow/bicep crease to the trigger guard, my index finger passes the guard by half the tip of my finger...The store clerk says that I would have to buy stock extenders..I own Benelli, Browning, Savage rifles, and I have never seen stock length issues for any of them. Usually I am a perfect fit for all brands ;) ...Have you seen a difference in S20 stock length? Has anyone else experienced this as well?

My first rifle was used Sako 75 hunter model in 30-06. At somepoint i wondered what is so special in Sako and Tikka action what some people told once in while. That became very clear when i handled ruger, remington and one Sabatti at range. Didnt know how much it matters in bolt-action if racking a bolt feels like there is gravel between metal surfaces. Well im thankfull for that experience to realise smooth action is not something which will come as default for every rifle. Most likely going to upgrade that sako to either Tikka tac1 or Sako s20.

Glad to finally see a Backfire review of this gun! I've had mine for over 2 years now (chambered in .30-06, also with hunter stock), and I just love it! Great accuracy, and the removable stock makes it really easy to pack into a small space when going on a hunting trip (to me this is one of the best oft-overlooked features). To me the heavier gun is actually an advantage, it has less recoil (especially with my suppressor and muzzle brake), and it's still not too heavy to carry around comfortably. I've taken 10 animals with it so far (African plains hunting, 2 Eland and 8 Springbok). What bipod do you have on there? Is it attached to the swing swivel stud? I'm looking for a nice bipod to use with this gun, and have been considering perhaps getting the precision fore end (but still keeping the hunter stock rear, that thumbhole is just great) with the M-LOK system.

I got one for ya. You don't need a heavy barrel in a bolt action for hunting. Other than sighting in and a little rang time chances are your rarely ever going to shot more than twice much less over 3 or more while hunting and on those rare occasions you do shoot over twice it's going to be a running shot so that little bit of deflection ain't going to matter. It's really the goochie gun mindset when it comes to fancy fluted and non flutted heavy barrels.
