In the second part of this video I’ll introduce you to a few more of the most popular cinema prime lenses which are currently used on professional sets.
I’ll break down each lens set on two criteria, their ergonomics, how easy they are to practically work with, and their look. The two most important considerations (if you ignore rental price) when it comes to choosing which lens is right for the job.

I'm partial towards older lenses which are a bit more 'imperfect'. I really like using the Zeiss Standard Speeds (T2.1) - I actually prefer their look to the Super Speeds and, as they're not as popular as the Super Speeds, I can often get a good deal from them at the rental house, as they're often sitting around unused. (Example of something I shot with the Standard Speeds: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nYErREuhX_E.html ) For documentary work I own a set of old Nikkor still lenses which I shoot on (and adapt to an EF mount). I way prefer them over sharper modern stills lenses/low cost cine lenses (especially when shooting 4K) as the newer lenses are a bit too sharp and perfect across the entire image for my liking. I also love the look of the Panchros (spherical), the DNAs (large format) and the Panavision C-Series (anamorphic) - although all of these sets are out of the low budget range I usually work in haha.
@cj64films

@@InDepthCine I’ve heard the old Nikkor lenses have an amazing look that is to be desired! I actually own the SMC Takumar 50mm F1.4 and a rare SMC Takumar 24mm 3.5, I also own the Helios 44-2 but I don’t use it as much on my pocket 4K

Great second part Gray! One thing that would have been worth mentioning is that DNA lenses have in fact very little to do with ARRI. They are manufactured by ARRI Rental and they can be only rented through them, just like the Alexa 65. Also they are very sought after, since there's only so many sets available.

Am interested in looks in film on the front end with lenses and lighting more than color grading. Probably even more important now with HDR to get close to a desired look before post. Heavy color grading is technically destructive to the image. Maximum information is actually at the moment of capture.

Hi IDC, I've been watching your videos for a while now and I have learned so much thanks to you. I was wondering if you could help me with selecting a camera as I am a beginning filmmaker and I don't want to buy one impulsively.I have looked around the internet but I really value your opinion more as you have a great experience and understanding of the technicality of filmmaking. If you have the time could you maybe give me a name for a camera that you think would suit my situation or maybe one that you liked to work with as a film student? I've seen some people film with phones as well, and using a lens on the camera to have a better image, is that also a good option? I have a 1500$ budget which is all I have, might sound stupid but you gotta start somewhere haha
