Seeing a Shuttle launch as a kid was absolutely amazing. Even at a 'safe distance' it was absolutely stunning to see, hear, and feel it. It was made even more impressive having seen these absolute behemoths up close at the Kennedy Space Center. I'm excited for next generation craft, but it was a sad day when I heard they were being 'retired.'

@@rich7787 EVERYTHING of NASAs goes billions upon billionsover budget, ur acting like thats a new thing.. space travel is dangerous, ppl will die, every astronaut knows and accepts that risk! @@1974lionsfan you’re acting like a 40% vehicle loss rate isn’t beyond awful. The space shuttle was supposed to be safe, cheap, simple and able to have minimal time between launches. That was the purpose of the project. It was none of those things.

Should’ve included top fuel dragster nitromethane engines. They do 0-300mph in the same amount of time it takes most cars to go 0-60mph. Newer ones are pushing almost 11,000hp I believe, and they shake the ground when they go
@DrFiero
@DrFiero 3 года назад
And the fuel consumption rate... omg... isn't it in the area of 10 gallons per second at full throttle? They are a site to behold!! A must see in person.
@bwood282
@bwood282 3 года назад
@@DrFiero yes so much fuel is injected into each cylinder that they have 2 spark plugs for each cylinder and the fuel goes in as liquid form instead of atomized like most other regular car engines. The exhaust “gases” are mostly unburnt fuel especially at idle where the engine is basically almost hydro locking on its own fuel, but once they wack the throttle it leans out tremendously due to the massive blower that allows the air in and that’s when they really roar
@bwood282
@bwood282 3 года назад
@@DrFiero they can use up to 22 us gallons from the time they fire up, do the burnout, stage, and run the 1/4 mile. Maybe 2-4 mins total time for all of that. 3-4 seconds of which is the actual run

Having an example of a rocket engine in the mix is good, although I'm surprised you didn't opt for the Rocketdyne F-1. Used to power the main stage of the Saturn V it was substantially more powerful than the Rocketdyne RS-25 used on the Space Shuttle.
@denniswalsh8476
@denniswalsh8476 3 года назад
Oh yeah, all three shuttle engines together are 1.2 million pounds of thrust. ONE F1 was 1.5 million and had five. Saturn 5, 7.5 million plus, shuttle about 5.5 million total so SRBs were over 2 million each..

@geilootv
@geilootv 3 года назад
Most powerful Rocket would be the russian N1 Rocket with 45,400 kN (Saturn V has 35,100 kN) and the most powerful liquid fuel rocket engine would be the russian RD-170 with 7.900 kN but it has 4 cumbustion chambers. The F-1 engine would be the most powerful single combustion chamber rocket engine with 6,910 kN. And the most powerful solid rocket engine would be the AJ-260 with around 24,000 kn.
@erniecolussy1705
@erniecolussy1705 3 года назад
I think that he was limiting it to reusable engines. The Space Shuttle's solid boaster engines produce more thrust than the main engine. But not what most of us would consider to be reusable or controllable. The F-1 engines were single use engines. At least that is how they were used.

Fun Fact: Wartsila Rtflex 96C marine diesel engines burn 100+metric tons(derated)of fuel every 24 hours at normal running speed. The oil sump is filled with around 60MT of lubricating oil. Burns about 150litres of crankcase oil, and 600-700litres of cylinder lubricating oil for every 24 hours. Most engines have 2-3 turbochargers. And for the High pressure common rail, it runs at about 70Mpa of fuel pressure while the engine is running.

Fuel consumption: The 110,000 hp Wartsila uses 13,000 pounds per hour. A GE CF6-80 turbofan engine uses about 25,000 pounds per hour to produce 62,000 pounds of thrust at takeoff. At seal level. I'm pretty sure that at altitude, the energy required to push a 767-300 with two of these engines works out to about 140,000 horsepower, but at altitude these engines together consume only about 9000 pounds per hour. Complicating this is the fact that the turbofan uses Jet-A while the Wartsila uses bunker fuel, which is totally different. Bunker fuel weighs 8.2 pounds per gallon, while Jet-A [like kerosene/diesel, which it basically is...] weighs typically 6.7 pounds per gallon.

When your diesel doesn't need a flywheel, because your engine is too massive

You could probably do a video on all the most powerful rocket engines alone and their different categories, the F1 powering the Saturn V being the most powerful single-chamber liquid fuel engine, the RS-25 you talked about here being one of the most efficient, the absurdly powerful SRB's driving it into space, the RD-180 being the actual most powerful liquid fuel rocket engine... There are a lot of categories.

you mean RD-170

The GE9X can basically fit a 737 fuselage in it. While it did set the world record at 135,000+lb of thrust, it is rated at ~120,000lb during normal operation. It's absolutely GIANT, as is the 777X. Happy to have a hand in that gorgeous aircraft that I hope doesn't experience crib death due to COVID.

The B777X will enter service in 2023, when SARS-CoV-2 will be nothing more than a distant, painful memory. The IATA says that there is a lot of pent-up demand for flight once the pandemic is over.

don't know if it could qualify, but early cars are interesting. I like the story about Bertha Benz' road trip, it was a great publicity stunt.

Hi, Simon. Very much appreciate your videos. How about making a video about the Chief Crazy Horse Memorial: a project to carve this great chief and his horse into the top of a mountain?

You should have mentioned that the space shuttle’s RS25 main engines have been stripped from the surviving shuttles and will be used (together with spares to give a total of 16 engines) expendably in sets of four in the SLS rockets

Idea for a side project. It's not really a side project, it's more of a combination of your channels, but the most Infamous nicknamed vehicles/vessels of WWII. Like HMS Warspite was "The Grand Old Lady", IJN Yamato was "Hotel Yamato", or USS Enterprise CV-6 was "The Grey Ghost". Be it infamous for the terror it reigned on their enemies or infamy from the terrors it dropped on its country's bank account, the stories behind each name would be a fun one.

The RS-25 engines from the Space Shuttle will be reused in the new SLS campaign. The test a few days ago show used those engines (even tho a hydraulics issue caused a premature shut down)
