The Most Precious Skill You Can Learn!
If we could teach everybody one skill, what would that be? Eren Bali, CEO & Co-founder of Udemy, discusses how "learning to learn by yourself" is that skill in the age of this open, accessible, connected world of the internet.
About our speaker.
Eren Bali is the CEO and co-founder of Udemy, a startup that aims to democratize educations by allowing anybody to teach and learn online. Udemy, started in late 2010, reached over 5000 courses and a total of 500,000 students by late 2012. This led the company to raise a total of $16 from investors in Silicon Valley and New York. Prior to Udemy, Eren worked at SpeedDate as a founding engineer and Director of Engineering while the company grew form 0 to 15 million users in 3 years and raised more than $14M. Eren graduated from METU (Turkey) with a degree in Computer Science and a double major degree in Mathematics. He won several awards in Mathematics, Physics and CS including a 2nd position in International Mathematical Olympiads.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

We need to get rid of school as a requirement and only require people to pass exams to gain credentials. Traditional schooling should be optional.

exactly my thought. but still, there is need for personal help. if you have to wait days or maybe weeks for every question that you have, for which you can't find an answer on the internet, the education will go very slow.

This is interesting, and seems useful. It seems worthwhile to give it a try.

I agree. For a good portion of the population, compulsory schooling is plain spirit crushing. Intelligent auto-didacts could get a shortcut into their vocation, and people of low intelligence would not be tortured with stuff, 90% of which they'll never again use in real life, and could instead focus on relationships/family, work, fitness, etc.

None will reject the idea that if you want a book about any matter you should pay, but one of the good things internet brought (and that' how the story of this guy starts) was the popularization of internet, where cultural contents were shared. In my opinion this guy is suggesting that specialist with something to share don't do it openly and make through the laws of market, with no low prices... I think this all requires us to think a bit if we want to keep the knowledge on the hands of those who can pay or if we consider knowledge something that shouldn't have a price. Particulary, I think the fever of new entrepreneurs needs some moral basics...
