As a user of hitfilm until my birthday (when I get Adobe Creative Cloud) I can officially say he uses light sword ultra which isn’t free The regular light sword effect is though

you should use the same technique as him but in after effects, the saber plug in is really limited for some shots.

Yeah, for the activation, I just keyframe the intensity of a lens flare at the begining, make it bright for a frame then I dim it over the next two frames.

You mean the Hitfilm app? if so yes, there's a setting in the lightsword effect called "stability", you just raise that to about a 50. If you are talking about a different app, I'm not 100% sure so it would be tough for me to say anything of use. Hope this helps.
