The Most Satisfying Pottery Process

How I make a crunchy lid fit perfectly, wait till the end to see, (and more importantly hear), how beautifully the lid spins in place.
Chemico valve grinding paste is the stuff I use to do this, both the coarse, then fine compound, until the groggy stoneware is polished to a glassy smooth finish.
First though, I have to crack the lid off and remove the waddings that supported it throughout the reduction firing. These little white discs are made from 50% kaolin and 50% coarse alumina hydrate and they’re pressed against the waxed underside of the lid before it’s very carefully positioned on the body in such a way that neither component is touching.
It takes time. Especially now I have some 40 pots saved up that need grinding, and I’ll probably spend an entire day working through all of them and then washing the residue away with hot, soapy water. The difference it makes though is colossal, not to mention you can make lids that don’t even fit correctly, fit.

Hello friends - just a quick note to say that these videos are just a really small portion of the content I upload on RU-vid. I also upload much longer, narrated videos that go into a TON of depth about the creation process of pottery. These are just small teasers if anything, and if you like these, I hope you'll like my 'proper' videos.

@snailsisbugs
@snailsisbugs Год назад
@@CastingShadow Do you think it depends on what clay you are using? More heavy duty stoneware like this I think can be made with clays that are gritty because of the inclusion of additives like grog. Not sure if that’s what is in this video. I’m not really into ceramics anymore tbh I just remember that there are some thicker clays I haven’t personally worked with that don’t really have entirely smooth textures.

I get that bringing it to smoothness would be satisfying………but I’m not sure I could bring myself to start lol, and CERTAIN I couldn’t if I had a whole production run to do!!! Tbh I’m not sure if it’s just the sound, that, literally, had me whole body cringing lol, or that the sound, reminds your body of the “feeling” of two surfaces grinding against each other…….which is also cringe inducing to the max!

That's valve grinding past or something equivalent. Starts off as coarse silicon carbide, which is very sharp, very hard and very brittle. As you continue to use it, the silicon carbide grit continuously breaks down into finer particles, so you don't have to change grit sizes.
