Chad Diogenes vs virgin plato
@dr.j.latourhighpriestdod5192
@dr.j.latourhighpriestdod5192 4 года назад
Virgin plato? Hardly a Greek trait. Especially coming from the Author of "Discussion on Eros" found in Plato's "Symposium". Obviously you're unaware of festivals to Dionysus , and the rituals held at Eleusis. Plato was obviously a sex mystic as were many in Greek culture (hence the polytheism, like the Gnostics after them) . Once you have tasted the Rapture of divine love making, regular people are not enough . So, it does appear to the outside observer, that these people are Virgins, but , that is not even the case, not even close. However, if the essence of this mysticism were made public, then you would revile them as devil's. Plato wrote about that one in "The Republic" , "The Cave" .

The phrase "Get out of my sunlight" is worded in Greek in such a way that it also means "enlighten me". Which makes more sense to me as being said as an irony to Alexander the Great, making him understand that his needs were spiritual and not materialistic, making even a great king powerless.

This is more about conciousness than a philosophy. He acted on his conciousness, something that takes courage in a reformed society that is focused on the economy and the materialistic. The simple act of being a human, an animal just like the rest of the world, can bring great peace. Take away the labels and language man gave to every single thing and you will see even more than before. Humanity tries to simplify things when it's the complexity that's truly amazing. If you seriously have peace, with nothing bothering you, knowledge flourishes.
@farrider3339
@farrider3339 3 года назад
Consciousness is 🔗 linked to knowledge - inevitably. Philosophy absent consciousness/knowledge doesn't exist. Rejecting everything man is taking for granted is THE way of living a free life. There can't be anY greater freedom than the freedom from the values society has superimposed on every single one of us .•°

The phrase "held his breath" is the same idiom as in english, meaning to not speak. This means, he may not have had any more profound words for others after whatever was deemed his latest philosophic escapade. Basically, he may have faded from popularity or stopped talking to people altogether. It can also mean to not speak out of fear, but this seems less likely for him.

I love it how he intentionally does or say things that sound or look crazy at first, then waits for someone to ask him the meaning of his actions, and when asked he explains the first seemingly crazy thing and suddenly it makes sense. I think this is a very efficient way to make other people understand your view point. If you just go strait to the point and just say your philosophy, its easily forgettable and unrelatable and your not easily convienced , these things make you think" i dont want to understand your view of the world, i already have my own". But if you intrigue them, make them wonder "what the hell is that guy thinking?? I gotta know!" , it sends a strong message.

I had a similar experience with Sartre. Sartre likes to write alot, like, I mean, his book on Being and Nothingness is THICK. Even his small essay on emotions is long as fuck. And he does all of this just to mess you up! He contradicts himself over and over and over, rarely does he get anywhere, passages that use extremely difficult words in a sequence that leaves you reading the page over and over until you get a faint idea of what he's talking about. It confused the shit out of me and sometimes, I just stopped caring because the things I was thinking and dreaming of while reading his texts were much more intriguing. I gave up, I just wanted my existence and my emotions to mean whatever I wanted them to mean and BAM that's how Sartre got his point across. I still read his books just to get an idea what I value in life because of this drifting quality he has.

apparently this exchange also happened: Plato was discoursing on his theory of ideas and, pointing to the cups on the table before him, said while there are many cups in the world, there is only one 'idea' of a cup, and this cupness precedes the existence of all particular cups. "I can see the cup on the table," interrupted Diogenes, "but I can't see the 'cupness'". "That's because you have the eyes to see the cup," said Plato, "but", tapping his head with his forefinger, "you don't have the intellect with which to comprehend 'cupness'." Diogenes walked up to the table, examined a cup and, looking inside, asked, "Is it empty?" Plato nodded. "Where is the 'emptiness' which precedes this empty cup?" asked Diogenes. Plato allowed himself a few moments to collect his thoughts, but Diogenes reached over and, tapping Plato's head with his finger, said "I think you will find here is the 'emptiness'."

The "governed men" quote is often translated as "I was a master" since the double entendre still kind of works in English (a master of slaves, a master to an apprentice). There's also a layer you missed there- He wasn't saying he was a king in Athens, he was saying that he'd be an ideal slave to a man who needed someone to enslave him. "I'd be great for anyone looking for a master." It was a powerful shitpost.

Diogenes replied, "Ok, I would ask you to move, for you are blocking my sunlight." When taken as a slave, it was the slavers that asked him what his trade was, in order to properly market him in the slave markets. Diogenes told them, "The only job I'm good at is bossing people around, so you should sell me to someone who needs a master." lmaoo, pure savagery!

the savageness level lies in the reaction of Alexander. If he was offended by the comment then it was high in savagery, If he contemplated its meaning and took it to heart it is less so. But If he was extremely offended initially, maybe for the entire day, until he laid down to sleep that night and he then finally realized and contemplated what was meant by the comment , that is the most savage.

+Parinita Badre I don't think it was intended to be a burn. He was simply demonstrating his philosophy of simplicity. Despite any material possessions we may have, titles we bear, power we inherit, our fate is the same; everyone, whether slave or king, is going to end up being a pile of bones somewhere.

Thank you Sisyphus 55, it is quite a video to watch.If I may add something is the Alexander and Diogenes full anecdote story: Alexander the Great had a tutor, Leonidas, who was privy to the cynical philosophy. Knower of cynical philosophy Alexander knew Diogenes the Dog, for his teachings, his style and his spirit. When Alexander was in Corinth wanted to meet Diogenes and sent an aide to find Diogenes who was in Kratheio, and to present him upon him. After the lieutenant found him, he said: "The King Alexander asks to see you." Diogenes replied "I do not want to see him. If he wants, let him come to see me. " And indeed, the king Alexander went to see Diogenes. THE MEETING When the Alexander approached him he said "I am the King Alexander". Diogenes replied calmly "and I am Diogenes the Cyon"(Cyon as it means in Greek the Dog). Alexander the Great wondered and said "Are you not afraid of me?" Diogenes replied "And what are you? Good or evil?". Alexander remained skeptical. As a king he could not have said that he is evil, and if he claimed that he is good, why someone should be afraid of him? Alexander instead of answering asked again "What favor would you like to ask of me?" And Diogenes again pun-answered "Aposkotison me." Meaning: "Take me from the dark oblivion, and show me the truth." With this clever pun of Diogenes the answer can be indicated up to "Stop hiding me from the sun", as cynics thought that human happiness is found in austerity, and in zestasia(=the warmth) of the sun and thus he does not ask anything of material riches. Upon hearing this, Alexander said the famous: "If I was not Alexander, I would like to be Diogenes." Alexander the Great and Diogenes had a long discussion with great importance that was saved by the Plousaraio Dion. In this, Diogenes explains to Alexander when a King is beneficial (to the people). Diogenes attributed the usefulness of a king in "If he is beneficial to the people." To give strength to this claim he said. "If you conquest throughout the Europe and not ofeleseis(=be useful to) the people, then you are not beneficial. If you conquest throughout the Africa and the Asia and not ofeleseis the people, again you're not useful. Even if you pass the columns of Hercules(he refers to the Gibraltar) and cross over the ocean and conquer this continent that is larger than Asia* and not ofeleseis the people, again you are not useful because they do not benefit at all. " * p.s. (does he means America?Maybe!) Again many thanks and keep discovering the world and its history!

I have been a fan of diogenes since i learned of him. I think he held a secret to philosophy that only the greats ever come to realize. His views were wild because life is wild. He saw through the 'cellphones' and 'new cars' of his day and saw that the people are taking a complicated route to the same destination, but incurring far more debt and burdens than necessary. He was the Original Street Smart, rich in common sense through the simplicity one would find in those moments when a child speaks more truth than an adult.
