Watching this, I actually realized how Brianne and Cersei are foils of one another. Both are women are wish they could fulfill men's roles and feel held back by their gender, Brianne wants to be a knight more than anything and is willing to die to live up to her noble, selfless values while Cersei wants to be just like her father and wants to follow in his footsteps as the heir that he never had. The difference between them, however, is two-fold, Brianne is seen as ugly while Cersei is seen as beautiful, but Brianne is kind, selfless, and humble while Cersei is vain, power-hungry, and cruel. Really makes me wonder just how their two stories might wind up intertwined considering how they're both important women in Jaime's life.
Brilliant analysis. Something even more tragic about Brienne is her possible future. We know that Brienne is known as Brienne the Beauty, both as a mockery of her lack of beauty and as a nod to her very beautiful blue eyes - the only part of her that is beautiful. But we also meet another unattractive character in the story named Pretty Merris. And I feel like Pretty Merris - with her chopped off breasts, earless face, slit nose and scars crossing both her cheeks and bruised body - could be an eerie nod to what could happen to Brienne if she doesn't go home like Randyll Tarly suggested to her. War is brutal to warriors and for a female warrior in those times, even moreso🕵🏾♂️
Its a test of character no doubt. A man burdened by hopeless romanticism, in everything he does. Will he choose the easy, vain, beautifully hideous love? Or the difficult, humble, hideously beautiful love? Its a test as old as time itself. GRRM has just found a grand Shakespearian way of unfolding it. Much like everything else for that matter.
That being said, they still refer to their gender in a different way. While Cersei is just insanely salty about not being a man (Even Jaime aknowledges that what Cersei loved about him was that he was a reflection of herself, as a male) Brienne seems to be less desperated about it. Obviously she knows that thing would be easier if she was a male, but she also dreams of herself as a regular good looking noble lady. Basically, if we were to rank female character about how ok they are being a woman, girls like Arianne, Catelyn or Even Asha would be 10 and Cersei would be 1, while Brienne would "only" be a 3 or 2
That one about Tysha actually loving Tyrion fucking crushed me, I'm in the second book and haven't got that far yet but I've seen the show, that was one of the saddest scenes in the first season and the fact that she actually loved him makes it ten times sadder
You've probably read them all by now, but if you haven't a word of a advice - don't watch those videos until you read all the books. There are so many things that weren't in the show and the videos may spoil some to you.
dhaval desai I have much respect for Elia Martell. She was very kind. I love kindhearted characters.. unfortunately, the kind people usually suffer in books and real life.
G filmer Martin is cruel for introducing this side story. I soooo wish the pretender was really baby Aegon. Dorn would have had a piece of their beloved Princess Elia back. Ugh! Martin, he tortures us so!
You know, I've been wondering. Should Lady Stoneheart be told that Jon isn't Ned's child, but Lyanna's? That all her hate for the boy kinda helped his cover. That Ned, for all his faults, had lied to his wife to protect his Nephew?
I think Lady Stoneheart is inevitably going to find out, yes. Maybe it'll bring a stirring of the old Cat back. I just hope the Blackfish never ends up encountering her, I think that'd break my heart. What really blew my mind about Catelyn was the realization that she could have turned Robb into the next Tywin and prevented everything that occurred after the North rose, if only she had called Robb out in front of his Lords, as she had intended. Instead she did not want his bannermen to "mock him in their cups", so she stayed silent. Look what an embarrassing father helped Tywin accomplish...
R+L=J isn't confirmed in the books and there's the whole situation with Varys and Young Griff who could end up being the real son or a blackfyre pretender. Plus there's the fact that Jon is dead in the books, so.
I really hope for a little "Happy-Ending" where Catelyn finds out that both of her daughters and youngest sons are still alive. After that she may die because her Zombie status is not worth living for. But please George, let her know before that not all of her children are killed.
I dont remember too much about it now, but i think since her revival, she cares more about revenge than about her daugthers. Like, i think she knows 'arya' is at winterfel marrying ramsey bolton but rather than going there to help, sje prefers to keep hanging people with her group of outlaws. I remember hearing something like that in some video but i cant remember wich video or from who
@@pinkidebbarma980 In the books, the Lannisters give Jeyne Poole (Sansa's friend in Series/Book 1) to the Boltons, and tell everyone that it is Arya (to give legitimacy). Sansa (as of yet) is still doing stuff in the Vale in the books
@@macer9054 What we hear about her in the books is from the people around her or third parties. She seems cold and revengeful... not much has been given towards her actively looking for her kids anymore. Perhaps the part she lost in her death was her empathy? perhaps she lost more then we think due to the time she spent dead. Anyway the Cat we knew and loved (or loathed, I never liked her as she seemed to fixated at the wrong things) is gone, what is left is "lady stoneheart".
She should have married Lord hightower. If there a Velaryon had a lady then the prince would haved wed but then again she may end in tragic because of the prince's actions
This video was great! I think Elia Martell is the most tragic. She had to witness her 2 kids die and then her own murder. All that after she had been betrayed but the man she loved and all the dangerous complications she had with her 2 pregnancies and the rough births she endured. Such a sad storyline. But great video!
@@PedroLucas-mg5je even the mad king sent away his pregnant wife and his son when the rebels came for him. Rhaegar straight up didn't care about his family, he was dumb and careless enough to leave them with his mad father
The most unfortunate characters are the plebeians that are mostly off-screen. Everything that happened to the high-born, happened to the poor - but ten times worse.
Boom. Bang on answer. Being raped by ur father/husband then watching the same happen to ur sisters, mothers, aunts and daughters. While knowing all sons, brothers and uncles are being sacrificed to the scariest fuckers in the world. Easily one of the top 3, fucked up tragic lives.
@@calebwinfield1403 Thanks to Dumb and Dumber for the demise of GoT. Diehard fan of the books, and after seeing *"Sir Bariston the Bold"* getting killed by the *Sons of Harpy's* in season 6 is where the downfall of this show started imo.
Littlefinger too - in his past, when he was littlefinger. The little guy who can't fight well in a world where physical fighting is a much bigger part of life than it is to us today. Even today the small guy is unlucky despite it not mattering anymore, there's still a residual disliking to small men. So imagine what it must be like if that disliking is much bigger. He makes up for it or overcomes it and does very very well for himself when it comes to power and influence. But still, the woman he's always loved never loves him, and is married to a man she does love. So he has that too, which is very mildly tragic i guess.
@@JefeDeJefes8484 between the massive wait for Winds of Winter and how dirty they did the books via the show I wonder if I'll ever pick up the remaining books. George did great with the world building and lore so ASOIAF will always have a soft spot in my heart while I read those growing up, just sort of burnt out at the idea of picking up the last two books (if they ever come out) and they suck as much as the show lol.
@@miaya.micronis Tyrion married Tysha who was a commoner. When Tywin found out he made Jamie lie and tell Tyrion that Tysa was a whore, then he made a fuck ton of Lannister soldiers rape Tysha and pay her a copper, he made Tyrion go last and pay her a gold piece. This is why Tyrion killed Tywin. As with Ashara Dayne, she was the sister to the sword of morning, Arthur Dayne. It is said that she had Brandon Starks child. The child died (or still born I don't remember which), she also died and she threw herself off a tower
@@miaya.micronis Tysha was Tyrions first wife and was gang raped by Tywins men and Tyrion. Her fate after that is unclear. Ashara Dayne was Sir Arthur Daynes sister. It is rumoured that either Brandon or Ned Stark impregnated her at the tournament at Harrenhall. But of course Brandon got killed by the mad King and Ned went on to marry Catlyn. After "Ned" kills her brother, he brings her his sword and its believed that her grief over her brother being killed, either her lover being killed or her lover marrying another woman and a stillbirth led to her killing herself by throwing herself off a cliff.
I go back and forth on Ned. Protecting Jon? All respect. His choices regarding Cersei and the succession? Dumb as a box of rocks. He failed to protect his family, and he failed to protect the realm. He weighed his honor against their safety and chose his honor. Holy shit, dude. I mean...I like Ned, I understand why he did what he did, and he's a badass fo sho. But jeebus man...
@@abrarbw Ned literally told Cersei himself what he was going to do Sansa just said her father wanted to leave should she have done that no but its not like it would have changed the outcome if she didn't. NED himself told her everything hold your male favourites accountable its coming off sexist.
Ned to me is the in-world example of why people like Stannis don't work. Besides the fact that I completely see him masking his greed and climb behind slogans like "justice", justice simply wouldn't have the good outcomes that people would want.
@@abrarbw Because I'm not sure if that little part was in the show. The books, yeah, Sansa played a critical role in Ned's downfall, but he was still an idiot for telling Cersei to begin with.
To be fair, I’m pretty sure that’s at least partially because of his experiences in Robert’s Rebellion. He saw a woman raped and murdered, with both her children slaughtered like pigs, while Robert applauded the death of “dragon spawn.” He had the chance to prevent something very similar from happening again, and he took it. Was it smart? Absolutely not. But decisions influenced by trauma rarely are.
Elia Martell was so beautiful, it's so sad what happened to her. I hope we get to see the trinity of Queen Raella Targaryen, Elia Martell, and Joanna Lannister in any future productions. They were all three best friends even though Elia and Joanna waited on their queen.
HBO handled the Hodor reveal so well I felt like I was reading it. Tragically it was among the final great moments before d&d said fuck it and torpedoed the series.
1. D&D 2. Dany’s “break the wheel” and “I did not come to be queen of the ashes” to “HaHa DrAgOn MaKe CiTy Go BoOm.” 3. Jon Snow: tons of buildup no payoff. 4. The people who had the misfortune of watching all 8 seasons and desperately praying that HBO does a season 9 and have S8 be a dream of Bran’s or GRRM saves it
5. The actors who literally developed mental health issues and or alcohol problems, because the characters they had loved and built up so much meant to them, and then series 8 completely annihilates all of them. I'm not exaggerating btw, if you're curious. Both the actors for Jon Snow and Daenerys developed issues coping with the ending for their characters. Kit Harington admitted himself to rehab so as to get his drinking under control, and Emilia Clarke also developed issues with depression and alcoholism following the ending for her character.
Her childrens and layer her brother. I think if she had wed someone else instead of the prince, the story would still be the same the rebellion and the fall of the dynasty
You mean Aerys the “Mad King”’ children? Well if so that is a good theory and is supported by the fact how much of a Lannister Rat Pycelle is but there’s a counterargument to this and it that Pycelle could’ve change Aerys’s mind about Tywin when the two were hating each other and Pycelle did nothing there and let the 7 kingdoms go to ruins and let the friendship weaken and that led to Aerys declining Tywin’s offer to marry Cersei to Rhaegar and if you say Pycelle doesn’t have influence but we have seen he really does have influence as a Grand Maester.
Ned's story was sad but at least he didn't live to see his children die on top of his siblings and parents as Catelyn did. She was literally betrayed by so many more that she genuinely loved like Little Finger and her sister. Then to think all her children died and watch Robb die and then become a Zombie Martin did her so dirty. I think Ellia got off a little easier and that's saying something.
What do you mean by "Ellia got off a little easier". She watched her beloved children died and got raped by the murderer. I think that might be the worst death imaginable to a mother
Wtf ? Elia was was betrayed by her husband imprisoned by her father in law and she had to pay for her husband’s actions seeing her babes been brutally murdered before been raped and murdered by the same killer ! She’s one of the few characters in ASOIAF that have done nothing to deserve her fate on the other hand catelyn stark literally started the war of the five kings by abducting Tyrion !
@@shaman1v120 Alot of character is ASOIF have been raped. Elia just had both things at the same time and it really al happened in one day. Cat suffered for a long time things would just get worse and worse until she died too. Just to come back as a zombie. Its all personal opinion that's just mine.
Helaena Targaryen, Aegon II's queen, who was forced to choose between her two sons by two assassins. The one she named was spared and the other killed right in front of her. Then the son who was spared was killed while they attempted to sneak him out of King's Landing. She then committed suicide and threw herself off the Red Keep, just like her daughter who married Aegon III would do.
Sandor Clegane? Disfigured for life by his own brother just to have his dad brush it off as "the bedding caught fire". The Hound is one of the very few characters in the series to acknowledge the hypocrisy of knighthood; mostly brutish, violent men, more interested in self-preservation than protecting people. He can see it's more than "a few bad apples". The whole orchard is rotten.
I appreciate these videos, but man, thinking back to GoT has been so soured from those final two seasons. I appreciate how deep the writing and episodes were prior to how the show ended..
Alot of the characters that already have sad or tragic storylines, get even worse when you put them at their book ages. That conversation between Dany and Jorah happens when she's 15 or 16. Arya is just shy of 11 when she enters Bravos. John is 16 when he's betrayed by the Night's Watch. Tyrion and Tysha were 14!!!!!! 14 years old and they both had to live through and move on from that.....
If only he knew the truth about the Nights Watch everyone there had a life before they ended up there so obviously with that kind of dilemma of factionalism is going to be a thing
Jeyne Poole for me. Her father was killed. Then she had to work in Littlefinger’s brothels, then Ramsay, and even after Theon rescued her, she gets frostbite and broken ribs. Give her a fucking break George!
I think Ned and Catlyn were st least happy for a good few years together. Lysa Aeryn had an unrequited obsessive live for Little finger then had several children die young so she desperately protected the one who survived until her death. That's tragic in a lot of ways. But I think one of the most extreme is the book character of Lollys who is mentally impaired, raped by a mob then married iff to Bron - no one seems to care about her at all except Tyrion. I agree about giving The Unsullied top spot on this list
Thank you for this. I see a lot of people railing on Lysa for not helping Cat, but that's because we're looking at Lysa through King Robb's eyes when she doesn't send reinforcements. Or through Cat's eyes, when she's holding court with her son and deciding whether Tyrion should live or die. But let's look at her from the outside - a young girl in love with a man below her station, a boy who grew up with them. But when the time came for her sister to marry her betrothed the boy Lysa loved nearly died challenging him to a duel. Then there's all that talk of tansy-tea on Hoster' Tully's deathbed, implying that Lysa got knocked-up by Littlefinger and Lord Tully made her get rid of it before marrying her off to an old man in some far away land. Then bring on the miscarriages, the stresses of living in King's Landing on someone who is clearly fragile mentally and emotionally, Petyr returning to her in secret and convincing her to poison her husband in order to save her son being sent off as a ward - to Casterly Rock, Winterfell or Dragonstone. Fleeing "for her life" with her child, surrounded by men whispering sweet nothings in order to sit in her husband's seat and (effectively) unseat her son. Then her sister shows up with a Lannister captive and leaves with their uncle, perhaps the one man she might trust in such a situation. I hate her as a character, but damn if she didn't have it rough.
ok I have the best idea for the next video 1. You need to find out and tell us what Podrick did to those girls who didn't take his money. this is the biggest conspiracy in Game of Thrones. How did he do it? we need details 2. finish the Tyrion's brothel joke
idk if this gets personal but Jenny of Oldstone's story hits me the most, because it's exactly the story of a friend of mine. His fiancee was killed in a traffic accident 2 weeks before their wedding and he just snapped. It's truly gutwrenching to see a friend getting sucked into insanity like that, and he never really recover since
I feel really bad for him something like that happening deserves noone ever and also for you since you have to see how your friends sanity dwindles. I hope that one day he can recover and it might get better. Couldnt find the words to express my thoughts perfectly but I wish your friend and you the best!
Eh his backstory isn't that tragic. He saw his parents drown and then Robert gave Storms end to Renly. The parents thing is tragic but it does weigh in a lot compared to the rest
soiaf where the songs are full of pain and suffering but you still listen to it because it helps elevate the pain and suffering from your life funny how the human works
Julian Price simpler times lol. I said back then he should of stayed dead and I’ll stand by it. Show went to shit once he came back. I don’t like it to often when characters come back from the dead. Unless its Mortal Kombat or something because ya know its jusr kinda over the top and goofy
When Catelyn says the most tragic creature is an ugly woman I thought she meant in the context of society bc women are meant to be beautiful and fragile and Briene is neither I didn’t actually think that’s what she thought bc she thought her brother was stupid for just wanting a pretty wife telling him someone with a strong heart is more important
Great video but I agree that Richard's family is more interesting, especially Nathaniel Richards/iron lad / Kang the conqueror. Very confusing lol would love a video explaining him.
Ned Stark: Dad and big Brother executed, Sister died in child birth, had to raise Jon Snow as his bastard straining the relationship with Catelyn and beheaded unjustly not long after old friend and ally King Robert's death. Tyrion Lannister: Born a dwarf, killed mother when born and hated by his sister Cersei & his father Tywin for both reasons. Ended up losing entire family including beloved Brother Jaime, killed his father after lifetime of mistreatment and being sentenced to death, put faith in Daenerys only for her to become mad like her father and burn King's Landing to the ground and lost many people he cared about along his journey. Generally unloved, mocked and derided with the exception of a few people. Sandor Clegane: Burnt by brother for playing with his toy, permanently scarred and scared of fire, treated with disrespect by his superiors, lives a loveless, bitter and twisted existence, picks up many injuries on his travels, loses the few people who try to help him and dies falling into flames getting revenge on his brother who he hates and blames for his miserable life.
Ned's sister Lyanna completely devastated his family. If she spoke up and told the truth about wanting to be with Rhagaer instead of Robert they would all still be alive and there would not have been a rebellion.
I do think that Jon Snow had the most tragic story. 2 women he loved dead. He wanted to just be a Stark but ended up being a Targaryen and banished to the wall and the wildlings.
All of the Lannister children have very tragic stories: Cersei, Jaime, and Tyrion all have very tragic stories and their stories aren't finished either.
You should've added daenerys in this too. She never knew her parents or rhaegar and viserys used to abuse her and then he sold her to some horselord who raped her then her son died and so much more.
Hi whycreate I have a question not about ASOIAF but about you , between these three men which one would you like to be if you could be one of them , all three are below The Man Who Always Wins The Man Who's Always Right The Man Who Has Everything
Ahhh shit, what was her name, Aenys I think? Whichever Targaryen girl took Belarion, or rather got taken by him, and probably went to Valyria. She came back with like parasites in her body as long as her arm, with arms and faces of their own.
i feel like jon himself is a pretty sad character, his whole life was pretty much a lie (assume r + l = j is canon to the books), he was treated like crap by the closest thing he had to a mother figure, his "father" never told him the truth of his identity (which you could argue was a blessing in disguise), his lover died in his arms, he was betrayed by his own men. he just can't catch a break
