it's difficult to be hard working when you don't feel passionately about something but this really inspires me to work hard and find my passion one step at a time. thanks arden!

Deborah Han aw I'm glad.. but don't be so hard on yourself if you can't figure out what you are passionate about... it can take time! Enjoy the process and just try learning different things! Something might surprise you and learning new things will help you discover what you truly love!

Your passion is what you'd be doing for no gain of any type. Imagine you have access to unlimited money and you could do anything with all of your time. What is the one thing that stands out to you that you'd find yourself doing most of that time?

I don't think you need to be passionate about something to work hard. Is it harder? Probably. I just left a career that I wasn't passionate about, but still worked hard and produced good work. Also, I don't think there is anything wrong with being mediocre. Not everyone is special, but anyone can be special.

I struggle with the choice between 2 careers.. one that I absolutely love but know it will lead to a life of working long hours while financially struggling. the other one will guarantee my life with financial success, a career I don't know if I'll enjoy, but I'd much rather be doing the first. It's really unfair when you know you can't pursue a passion because it doesn't pay well, and only the top 1% in the industry make a living out of it... so it just stays a hobby

This is actually the problem that I had two years ago. I'm (still) stuck in business school with a concentration in marketing while my passion lay elsewhere and I've always thought "well I don't have the opportunity, I can't do it, no one is teaching me the stuff I want to be taught." I was so fed up with feeling shitty that I told myself "That's it, I'm done feeling sorry for myself, it's time to start working on something that actually matters to me." So I started to write this book and I actually finished it earlier this year. I don't actually want to publish it (it's my first ever finished work, of course it sucks), but it makes me feel better knowing that against all of these invisible hurdles, I did it anyway and I've taken a step forward.

See, I'm the type of person that likes doing work and staying busy and doing tangible thing to reach my goals, and most people around me are always wondering why, and this is it. This is why I love working and reaching my goals, because they're the ones that really mean a lot: the ones I had to work really hard for. It's always really confusing when people are saying, "I'll just do the bare minimum to get by" or "I'll just cheat" because as much as I understand that some work is hard and just not fun, it also doesn't make sense to miss out on something amazing because your work wasn't the absolute best it could have been. Show off your talents and show off what you're good at! It's so rewarding to really push yourself and have fun while doing work! Love you, Arden, this is exactly the kind of message that needs to go out in the world of fast fame that we live in.

And for people who are struggling to take initiative (due to financial limitations, mental illness, disability, unsupportive environments, or any other reason): it's okay to be scared, and struggle, and need help. A big part of being resilient is accepting that you will make some mistakes and experience failure along the way; none of that means you should give up. It's also never too late to find your path and take the first steps. I was on one path for six years, then found a different calling and found myself suddenly racing along a new path for the last two years. It's been exciting, stressful and scary, and a lot of the time it feels like I'm all alone, but I never really am and nothing can actually stop me from achieving my goals. P.S. It also turned out that I needed those six years in a rut to work and slooooooooowly save up money to make my new path possible, so I completely get it if just trying to survive now is preventing you from investing in your future. It's really hard and there are no easy answers.

I don' think that is exactly true. I think today people have a misunderstanding of "hard work." like you might think of youtubers who made it big, or people who made apps and made it big, but hey i live in the SF bay area and personally have a few friends who made it big. hard workers? only 1 of them lol. the rest? lucky... copied an idea that was already out there, it got popular by chance, a bigger company bought them out, they got multi-millions. hard workers? how about doctors who spend 8 years after high school broke and studying then the next few years 80 hour work weeks? ph.ds who advance humanity that simply don't sleep and always have bags under their eyes doing research and conducting experiments? they work 10 times harder than the people you are probably imagining... but get no glory. even worse is those who work just as hard if not harder than these people, the guy in high school who had no parents but 3 siblings he had to care for, working 50 hours under the table and getting in trouble for falling asleep in class but never opened his mouth because he was afraid to get in legal trouble. finally graduating to work 2 - 3 construction sites at any given time. people glorify and celebritize entrepreneurs, but really a lot of it is luck or sly tactics. steve jobs was not liked by his deisgn and programing team, he worked them to the point of abuse and took all the credit because he was the face of the company at the time. facebook - back stab friend for idea, alibaba - use family and friend money to basically copy ebay software and move it to China where the government made a man-made vacuum of online services, Jack Ma literaly got rich because he was Chinese and because ebay and amazon had just become well established in the USA, and he was of the right age when it happened, and that his parents gave him like a million USD and his friends threw in more and he turns around and says "if you are 30 and still not rich, you are lazy" I mean i personally know people of all these backgrounds listed, and when it comes to "hard work" the people that you are bringing up, are not "lazy" but they are definitely not the hardest working. EDIT: with that said, the dude smoking pot all day is 100% not going to be a success. I guess it is like buying a lotto ticket. some buy countless tickets and never win, some buy one and win, but in the end you need to get off your butt and buy at least one to have a shot. So by all means, get off your butt and work hard. but don't glorify those who got lucky or shame those who didn't.

I like the equation "preparation + opportunity = luck" Although there is just straight blind luck. Your overall message of working hard is great. I heard recently that there is a strong undercurrent these days of only doing what you like to do. While doing what you're passionate is awesome sometimes there's certain tasks that aren't the greatest, they are just things that will benefit you even though you aren't super enthusiastic about doing them. For example, working out is sometimes not the most fun for some but after they do it they feel great. Or sometimes like reading the Bible can be seen as a chore but after one spends time in it, then they may come away with some more insight. The other thing that popped into my head is balance and self care. The Japanese culture in Japan is super hard working but the happiness over there is questionable because the suicide rate is increasing. So it is really good to reflect on what your definition of success is. Some people chase a strong bank account. And some people invest in strong relationships with family and friends. There's only so much time and is a limited resource. Life is also short. So balancing career time with relational time is good whether it's with family, friends, or a significant other. Self care is also important especially in industries or lines of work that make people burn out. Some people need more recharging than others but we all need some sort of recharge to keep pursuing what we want to pursue.

Just because someone has the talent and potential but doesnt take an opportunity that comes their way, it could mean they just like the comfort zone that theyre in and that should totally be fine. Perhaps in the entertainment industry, you have to be the type A, go-getter, passionate about [fill in the blank], but i think it's totally okay to just want a comfortable life and enjoy the enough that they have. This society is always praising characters that are always super hardworking, work work work, but you know what, i think it should totally be fine and attractive to just want to work enough so you have enough time to enjoy other things in life that may seem smaller, but just as important!

Yes! I agree! I will say that I also think there are people who really are satisfied with what they have and don't have that ambition--the types of people who would never complain that they didn't "make it" because they weren't trying to. And I have a lot of respect for people who are content with much less, too. I'm definitely always desperately trying to get as much and as good as I can, but I understand that other people might just not want that.

I admit, that I can be one of those lazy people at times, especially when I want to go out somewhere, but just don't feel motivated to do it. It's a habit and for me personally, it comes from other factors too. But, sometimes, it takes another person or that something to motivate you to do things. No one's perfect, I and everyone else has flaws that they don't like, but like anything else, it takes prayer or just finding things that you love to do. Anyways, I totally agree where you are coming from and I respect that you are an honest person. God Bless!! ✌💜💜

I'm a lazy person. I do what I enjoy and take opportunities as they come. I became a business owner a few months ago because the opportunity came up to take over for my boss. I looked at it and said, 'running a business is hard and there is a lot that I don't know'... then I looked at the work I've been doing there for almost three years and decided that a little extra work to keep doing a job that I enjoy should be fine. Now I own the business and I'm still learning some of the basics of running it... but it hasn't really made my job much harder. If anything, now instead of struggling to find filler things to do while on shift, I can change things that I've always wanted to change but my boss was refusing. I also get to talk about the product with more customers now. I look back and recognize that I've always been lazy. Worked for my parents while growing up, then worked in a high volume warehouse for almost 30 months... then worked in a low volume warehouse for roughly a couple years... then worked in a moderate volume warehouse for a couple years... then worked for an online retailer for I think 3-4 years... and now I own it. Even the most brutal of those jobs (the first warehouse) was something I enjoyed, so even when I was working hard it felt like I was being lazy. I also don't believe in luck the same way as others. Luck can't be made, but it also doesn't control everything. My first warehouse job, I literally went to the warehouse that hires anyone. My second was 'luck' that a friend met a guy who then called my friend to try and hire him... and I happened to be there when he called. The third wasn't luck as my brother was already working there - so I was hired with 'if I was half as good as my brother then I'd be great' (which I was half as good - hard to keep up with my brother). Where I am now, it could be considered 'luck' that my boss started going to my church and then needed someone good with computers to help out. Looking back, one could call it 'luck' that things went how they did... but if they had gone differently then I'd still looking back on how things went and contemplating 'luck'. To me, such events in my life are not luck. Luck to me is when I have a night where I roll awesome every time... or horribly every time. (My poor D&D character going back and forth between high win rate and high fail rate.) Luck to me is spotting a black car with their headlights off pulling out in front of me on an unlit road in the dead of night and having enough time to stop. Luck to me is reaching into a bag or box to grab something and realizing later that someone had put a sharp knife in there and I somehow didn't cut myself on it. But then, I read those all over... and are they really luck? Looking back, everything I went through led me to where I am... and where I am is leading to where I'll be. Maybe I won't have an awesome life and I'll just get by... but maybe with that life, I'll unknowingly help someone else to have a better life. Maybe I am exactly where I need to be to help someone else have a better life. And then I remember that I don't have a wife and I sigh. If you want luck... try finding someone you can get along with for the rest of your life. Rachel Liwanag did you not see all the jump cuts? It didn't come out all smooth in one take, but her hard work and dedication in her editing and getting out the message paid off. It's not as easy as it looks. You can tell she puts a lot of work into her stuff.

Its just a twist on saying that the most attractive thing is success. And that in and of itself is unattractive. Just my humble opinion.
@ardenBcho
@ardenBcho 7 лет назад
Sam D just depends on how you define success. I define success as doing your best in whatever it is you do. Doesn't matter if you are rich or poor as long as you are working hard and happy with where you are - isn't that successful? I may not be rich, but I know my parents consider me to be successful for the mere fact that I tried, and I'm still trying. I think parents who love their children and raise them to be kind and loving are successful. I think a teacher who goes above and beyond for his/her students is successful and hardworking but they may not have a 6 figure salary. How is that unattractive?
@alpsi285
@alpsi285 7 лет назад
ardenBcho I don't want you to think I'm attacking you. I'm just stating things the way I see it. I understand that drive and ambition is an attractive quality to most people. You cleared it up by saying that its not neccisarily success that is attractive but ambition. And that is a big difference. Passion and drive are definitely attractive qualities. Success is "of this world" and unfortunately most people think that that is the most important thing. Glad you aren't one of them. I'm a big believer/supporter in you Arden so dont take what I said personally. Dont let life get you down too much either. Hoping nothing but the best for you.

Awesome video! Especially that part about luck... I always had a passion for design and I thought that train left the station many years ago after working in a different industry for many years. Many years later, a miraculous opportunity came by at the perfect time and now I am working full time in the design work that I always dreamt about. Sometimes I would think I was lucky for the opportunity to pursue my dream, but realized it was hard work and taking action when no one else around me would that made the dream into a reality. Just had to trust God always had a path for me and to have the courage to take it when it was time.

I really liked this video! So inspirational & I felt like I really needed to hear these words. It's hard to find the motivation to do something you want when you're tired everyday from doing things you don't particularly enjoy but have to do though so I'm always in conflict with myself :l

I really agree with this and feel the same way Arden! Good to see yourself being proud of your success. I myself was never envious of people who were given success, but I admired ppl who earned it themselves! By the way I saw you at Yucheon Nangmyun about a month ago! You were wearing a baby blue hoodie & a cap. Hehe. Sorry I kept staring. I wasn’t sure if it was you or not. :)

@littlepicasso6113
@littlepicasso6113 7 лет назад
Different people have different traits, all which can be good or bad. Im sure someone who is naturally "lazy" has created some amazing things from not wanting to do something. Think outside the box. All the technology created is due to humans being lazy. Perhaps what you mean is being able to have the commitment to set forth with the things you want...and that is a whole other beast. Humans are complicated why label anything?

Some people don't realize this but most hard things are accomplished by completing small increments towards your goal everyday. Nothing happens over night. Set a goal, works towards it everyday and don't give up. There's gonna be days where you don't feel like doing it but in the end it always pays off.

I do admire hardworking people as long as they’re humble. It is likewise unattractive (and pretty common) when some busy ambitious people look down on or judge others who are satisfied with less.

I don't know what I am really passionate about . I just try to make the right choice when the time comes even when I hadn't figured out properly about what I have passion in. Took medicine. It's more difficult than it sounds. Had all my family and some really close friends back me up. There's no going back. I just have to keep going on.

As a person born with bad health i think people with normal or even strong health is the one who's lucky. Pulling all nighter or sleeping late makes my body sick, kidneys problems, vertigo, etc. So i always try to manage my time and delegate tasks. I always envy people who can sleep for 3-4hours a day. Good health is wealth.

Hey Arden, I just found out about your channel and thanks for the inspirational video! As an entrepreneur, I don't think passion or hard work is something I lack, but have you experienced working so hard for so long, and pushing with as much passion as you can, and yet not see the kind of results you want? It gets discouraging after a while. But your video is a reminder to continue going for it, and to be kind and positive to myself. Thanks again and you've earned another subscriber :)
