There are a lot of coaches who are brought into the conversation of being the best ever. I feel like Joe Gibbs isn't brought up enough.
What are your thoughts?

Gibbs is by far and away the BEST NFL Coach in the history of the game. In 1979, as O-coordinator of the San Diego Chargers...Gibbs coached his trio of receivers each over 1,000 yards, all in the same season. To date, he's the only coach to accomplish this. Gibbs' 1983 SB Redskin team broke the league scoring record and produced season MVP, Joe Theismann. Gibbs' 1991 SB Redskin Team broke the league scoring record AGAIN! Gibbs has produced two SB rushing champions...John Riggins (1982) and Timmy Smith (1987), who still holds the Super Bowl rushing record present day. Gibbs is the ONLY Coach in NFL history to win three SB titles with (3) different QB's (record setting performance by Doug Williams) and also (3) different RB's. Remember Gibbs' Redskin teams had to go through the Lawrence Taylor led NY Giants, The Doomsday Defense of Dallas and the Buddy Ryan led Philadelphia Eagles with a young killer named Reggie White. Finally, Gibbs accomplished feat after feat...record after record behind the greatest O-line the game has ever seen. HONESTLY...ask yourself, could the other so-called great coaches in the league who had the privilege of winning with top Hall of Fame players...could they have won with any of Gibbs' rosters? Gibbs certainly would have won with any of their rosters

Eh, 1991 was impressive but 1987 and 1982 should have asterisks against them, it was a strike year and the starters (non-strike)played a combined 21 games in both seasons. I mean they were good, but idk if they have 3 chips in 10 seasons if it wasn’t for the strikes.

Joe Gibbs also had decent success with the Redskins in the 00's as well. The roster didn't have household names besides Clinton Portis & Sean Taylor & London Fletcher, but 2 playoff seasons in 2005 & 2007 is really solid.

And as we know, Joe Gibbs has used the very same philosophy he brought to Washington to his 3-decade run in NASCAR, where he's won everything that sport has to offer more than once, including five championships in NASCAR's top series with three different drivers (Bobby Labonte in 2000, Tony Stewart in 2002 and 2005, and Kyle Busch in 2015 and 2019), and four Daytona 500s (one of which was his first NASCAR win in 1993) with two other drivers (Dale Jarrett in 1993 and Denny Hamlin in 2016, 2019-'20), and who's organization remains one of the most dominant in the sport, which combined with his success over 16 seasons as an NFL head coach, is why he's one of the very few individuals inducted in two major professional sports' Halls of Fame.

In the 87 strike season Gibbs did two notable things -- win all of his games with the replacement players, while at the same time getting his regulars guys to hang together and not cross the picket line. That is a hard needle to thread.
@robertlevine2827

That's a prime example of Gibbs's mastery of psychology. One of the biggest intangibles the Redskins had going for them under Gibbs was an incredible esprit de corps--they functioned AS A TEAM at an amazing level. He created that w/the regulars, and he created that w/the scabs, and he wasn't going to compromise either one. A lot of regulars wanted to come back for the Cowboys game; Dallas had I think 9 regular players going into it. Gibbs told them, "You left as a team; when you come back, you will come back as a team." The result was one of the greatest upsets in NFL history w/all-scab Washington beating Dallas 13-3.

I remember the 91 season very well, attended both playoff games at RFK stadium, one of the most memorable moments I've ever experienced in sports, near the end of the Falcons game Redskins scored a touchdown which pretty much sealed the game, I was screaming with joy, the place was in total pandemonium, the weather was horrible, rain, sleet and cold the entire game, the stadium was kind enough to give everyone a yellow seat cushion before the game with the Redskins logo, when Redskins scored the game clinching touchdown seat cushions flew! I kept mine though, one of my favorite pieces of memorabilia, thank God I saved it. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0eUG9lSx8XQ.html

Definitely. I can say that comfortably even as an eagles fan. The redskins have always been treated like a red headed step child, but it doesn't mean they're a particularly great organization. They have been picked on. If only the league could swallow its pride and hold other teams like the Jets, bears, raiders, texans, and browns to more reasonable standards, there could be some real accountability.

Great video. Another one I'd nominate to at least be in the discussion is Weeb Ewbank. The guy won three championships with two different teams (Colts and Jets) and yet when people discuss the Jets' Super Bowl, it's constant talk about Joe Namath (and deservedly so), but almost no one mentions the coach who actually brought them there. Anyway, I was always partial to Gibbs. He's a great guy.

Gibbs also had a little "magic" to him. Three instances come to mind: Naming Timmy Smith as the running back in the Super bowl at the last minute (and he still holds the rushing record!), deciding to keep Doug Williams at the last minute after he had seemingly negotiated trading him to the Raiders, and switching from Schroeder to Williams after the last game of the regular season. He was also a superb game adjuster. Many times I remember him adjusting after halftime to get the offense going and then winning the game. Also, introducing the use of another tight end to handle the impossible load of Lawrence Taylor. This later became a staple of the Redskins offense and added a powerful new dimension to it. Finally, a good argument can be made that the 91 Redskins are the best team ever. Certainly on offense they were incomparable. The combination of passing (deep, middle or long -- to wide receivers or running backs or tight ends) and very solid running with Earnest Byner, who was a super, all-around back (as well as the sold contributions of Riggs and Earvins) behind the incomparable Hogs, and the best long-ball passer of his time -- Rypien. On defense they actually shut out three teams that year, and in the playoffs' they totally dominated their opponents.

I think the strike shortened seasons are what cause many to not pay him the same respects that they give to Lomardi, Landry, Walsh, Belichick, etc. On one hand I see their point, the strike shortned seasons did lead to fewer games being played and the quality of play was lowered by the scabs. But at the same time, it is commendable that he was able to keep his team together amidst the 2 strikes. He's a great coach for sure.

In 82 the Redskins still had to win 4 playoff games and beat all the best teams that year as the 1 seed. That team ended up 12-1. In 87 there were 3 scab games but if you remember, the last scab game the Redskins had NO regular players. Dallas had several regulars.. Danny White and Dorsett to name a few. The Redskins ended up winning that game in Dallas on Mon night. One of the great coaching jobs ever by that entire staff. Organizations w/ championships and the Redskins assembled a good team that won all 3 scab games. Then went on ( in the playoffs) to beat a great Bears team in Chicago and a streaking Vikings team that had just upset the 49ers. Then routed Denver. These were absolute great coaching and great GM work by Bobby Bethered. I get those slights but for us Redskin fans we know just how great of a job this all was.

I'd honestly say Gibbs is the best coach ever, because his winning ways didn't just stay in the NFL. After he left the NFL in the early 90s, he built a NASCAR team from scratch, which as of writing this on Dec 30, 2022, has 4 Daytona 500 wins (1994, 2016, 2019, & 2020), and 5 NASCAR Cup Series championships (2000, 2002, 2005, 2015, & 2019). About 30 years after Joe Gibbs Racing was created, JGR is still the first or second strongest NASCAR team, which is why I dont think its far fetched to say that Joe Gibbs is the best coach in the history of sports. And by the way, this is coming from someone who's NFL team is the Cowboys, and NASCAR drivers are Tony Stewart (who left Gibbs to race for his own team after the 2008 season) and Kyle Larson (who drives for Gibbs main rival)

I continue to await the video that lays out WHY Gibbs was a winner, and in the face of that winning quality, people somehow still just don't appreciate him. When this is done people will know what is underrated about him. I would guess part of a his success is due to getting a important Cadre of assistantts who regularly got the players prepared for the next game. then he had an ability to inspire his players and get there by in part because his commitment to the success of the team was greater than what he asked of his players. And then there was his disarming and basic almost humble Style, which is disarming, which allows his players to be more open to him, and in turn allow his subtle influence to permeate their commitment and work ethic if what I say is true there must be players who would hold forth on the personal influence he had over them. That would be an interesting video!

Joe Gibbs is the greatest head coach in NFL history, no debate about it. Sure, Beleihick won 6 out of 9 Super Bowls, which is impressive for sure and the most championships of any coach, but he also had Brady, the GOAT at the helm. Brady proved what a legend he is by winning another Super Bowl with a different team. Other coaches won super bowls with HOF QBs like John Elway, Peyton Manning, Joe Montana, Troy Aikman, and Terry Bradshaw, all who won multiple championships in their career. Only Joe Gibbs won three out of four Super Bowls with three different QBs, none of them were future HOF selections. Gibbs’ star wasn’t any QB or even great running backs, with the exception of John Riggins. The stars for Gibbs was the greatest offensive line in NFL history. The only O-line that was able to help their running backs set the Super Bowl rushing record, with the last record still standing today. First John Riggins set the Super Bowl rushing record, which would be broke the next year by Marcus Allen. Timmy Smith broke Marcus Allen’s rushing record and Smith’s record still stands today, ever since 1988!. History proved that Smith wasn’t a great running back as he was cut from the team a year later and never did anything else of note in his short career. No, Smith rushed through holes that Joe Gibbs himself could have waltzed through. That same line allowed only 9 sacks for Mark Rypien in the entire 1991 season. Whether pass protection or opening huge holes for running backs, that offensive line over-powered defensive lines, many lines that had HOF linebackers and defensive ends and defensive backs, like Reggie White, Ronnie Lott, Mike SIngletery and Lawrence Taylor, to name a few. Washington knocked those 85’ Bears out of the playoffs two years in a row following their best season ever, holding legend Walter Peyton to some of the fewest yards in his entire career and both times at their home in Soldier Field. The real crime is that only one of the Hogs is in the HOF. Russ Grimm is the only Hog, so far, to be inducted. Jeff Boistic and Joe Jacoby played in all four super bowls with the Redskins. They only opened holes so large that Timmy Smith rushed for more than 200 yard against Denver. Jacoby seems like a no brainer for the HOF. But linemen are always overlooked by the Hall. Gibbs proved that any team that works together can beat even teams riddled with stars. The championship Redskins were the no-name players that won world championships. Winning the NFC East was not easy. The NFC East teams have the most super bowls than any other division in the NFL and most of those wins came in the 1970s, 80s and 90s. Only Philly has taken advantage of the crappy ownership of the Cowboys, Redskins and NY Giants to capture their first championships. If you include all Super Bowl appearances, no other division is anywhere near the NFC East. With 21 Super Bowl appearances and 13 wins, with a four year streak in 1991-94 the NFC East has been a powerhouse decade after decade, so Gibbs had that to contend with season after season. One reason the NFC East has so many championships is because just winning that division meant you were probably the best team in the league any given year. This teams really tested each other game after game. Having to [play any of these teams twice was quite a challenge for any coach. There are many reasons why Gibbs has proven he could win super bowls with great coaching alone, no star future HOF players necessary. That’s what makes a good coach. You can’t say that Gibbs had some Elway or Brady QB. He has too beat teams loaded with future HOF players and beat them with just great coaching and a dominant offensive line. What Gibbs and Brathard did during the player strike was worthy of a hollywood film. 'They had ten days to build a team and the games would count. The Redskins were the only team to have no players cross the picket line, but the replacement players went undefeated, even beating Dallas on Monday Night Football. Thy were playing against a Dallas team that had most of their star players playing that night, but the replacement Redskins team still beat them. That's coaching. Coach Gibbs was credited for keeping his players united and not cross the line. I was happy to see that the replacement plauyers finally got Super Bowl rings a few years ago. The only goos thing Snyder ever did. Doug WIlliams showed up to hand those players their rings.

Not sure on underrated, Gibbs got into the HOF pretty fast vs Jimmy Johnson who had to wait almost 30 years after retirement to get in.

Underrated? I would say he's solidly rated. He's in the Hall of Fame! And don't bow to the woke mob and apologize for saying Washington Redskins when discussing the past...it is a factually accurate description of their name at that time.

He's not the most underrated. He's the great Head Coach of all time. He won 3 Super Bowls with 3 different, not too good QB's. Look at all the other legendary Head Coaches. What did they all have? A franchise QB. He never had one and his offenses were still at the top. He also won 3 Super Bowls with 3 different RBs. Riggins, Timmy Smith and Earnest Byne. That's what makes him the best. Just look at that 1991 Redskins team. That might be the best team of all time. The team that lost to the Raiders in the Super Bowl were beasts also. Don't know what happened in that game. It's very rare that Gibbs would be out coached.

Goddamnit there’s no justification for Jacoby not being in the Hall!!! He should have gone in before Grimm!!!! You put perpetually injured Tony Boselli in and Big Jake is still not in???!!!!! Complete BS!!!!

Who the hell is Melvin Jones? No original Hogs were called Melvin Jones. Fred Dean,Jeff Bostic,Joe Jacoby,Mark May, George Stark and Russ Grimm. Doc Walker was their tight end. Jay Schroder with an "A" not an "O".... good tribute otherwise 👏

@@gerrypeet4861 True...I tried to take that into account and not put him on full blast.... OG Skins fan over 60 years and was lucky enough to see all those memorable games at RFK and the best still in my opinion was the 72 championship game against the hated Cowboys. Seen all the Super Bowl years playoff games too and unfortunately an entire generation of fans know nothing of those teams and have been subjected to 3 decades of misery and pain from Commander Dan..... Definitely appreciate the young man for his efforts in paying homage to the Skins of old.
