Just finished a documentary series that had us travelling for three months, and I couldn't agree more. We relegated the Pocket 6K Pro to B-Cam, and both me and my B-cam operator ended up wishing we just had two URSA G2s. Nothing beats being able to pull that workhorse out of a Tenba high-top bag and be rolling instantly! Love the format options, love everything about it.
It's so true! Honestly any URSA content I make is always going to get less views than something Pocket related, which I get, less people own them but they are excellent cameras!
@@FrameVoyager LOL the legendary sharp sigma 18 - 35 1.8. Can't blame ya. I use old glass vintage carl zeiss lenses and i throw on a tiffen. Makes it look so good!
sold a Canon C200 years ago after renting the Ursa G2 to see if I could use it as a run n gun micro-doc rig. Fell in love with it. sold the c200, no need to look back. Love the camera. Great weight (less micro jitters). BRAW(wont use anything else anymore), FANTASTIC UI(OMG Canon and Sony.. horrible), and Resolve in post?? well.. sold. sold sold.
Hey man nice vid... Appreciate the effort and the music too it's smooth.. and I love that this review is about your experience and not a tipical routine camera specs review. I didn't expect that... And could you add some bloopers at the end for the next video onwards that would be great 👍
Appreciate it! Yeah, I like giving out specs but you can find them anywhere. I just wanted to give a review about my experience with it in my field of work for those of you who do similar projects! I'll try and throw some more bloopers in next time! haha
Very nice video and I agree with you. The Ursa G2 is a very, very underrated camera. It's my first choice in my daily work. I shoot much more with it than with my beloved Sony PMW-F55 (which is a fantastic camera).
The hardest thing for me is justifying the extra $3,000+ price difference between the G2 and 6K Pro. I do a lot of doc work as well as some brand/client shoots, and I’d love to have a beefier body with a few more features (current a cam is the 6K non-pro) but I just can’t decide if it’s worth it given the age of the camera, lack of gen 5 color, and, mostly, that darn price tag.
It's definitely something to think about! I'll be diving deeper into this in some future videos. I need to do some side by side comparisons but I think there are a few things that bump it up above the 6k pro. But honestly the 6k pro is an excellent camera as well
With the Ursa though, you get the Fairchild sensor. The image is just way more beautiful and pleasing. Actually fairly comparable to an Alexa mini. A lot of people don't take that into account. I do wish Blackmagic would put the Ursa sensor in a smaller camera with better form factor. Perhaps in a bm micro ii?
I just bought a used one for 2900.-, it came out of a repair so the inside was brand new! I bought about 4k worth of accessories also second hand from a guy for 1.6k. In total I spent 4.5k to be ready to shoot, worth every penny, I have an EVF, v-mount batteries, tons of storage and an amazing tool with a beautiful 15 stops of dynamic range. My 6K rig 3 years ago cost me around 3K, if I compare 1.5K difference is worth the image and the tools (internal NDs, buttons, Full size XLR etc...)
I've found personally that my rigged out pocket 6k is more useful after looking at an Ursa. The size is similar to something like a C70 with a V mount on rails, and is overall a more compact and useful package. However, if it comes down to a Pocket 6k G2 and an Ursa, I'd take the Ursa. I don't like the new body style of the G2 and Pro. Too big for what they were designed to be.
Hey, love the channel so keep up the great work! Towards the beginning of the vid you used a zoom fade a couple times. Is this something you created or purchased? Thanks!
Excellent video! I’ve just discovered your channel a week ago or so and I’m loving it here. I am however, curious as to whether or not your stance on this camera changes at all since the Ursa Mini 12K has dropped in price? Would you still recommend the 4K? Or what? I’d love to hear your thoughts on this :)
Appreciate that and that's a great question! I would hold off on buying it for a few months to see if the price falls off but my thoughts on this camera are still the same. It's one that will be a good camera for the next 5 years. The only things will be the fact that BMD probably will not have another update for this camera
Totally up for bmpcc 4k/6k pro style videos for Ursa G2! It's a great camera but it's so damn heavy for me. 😂 Looking forward to seeing them and especially the camera support vest. 🤨
Camera anime - let's go! 🤩🤟 I still don't understand why this camera is better than the 6k pro if it doesn't have dual native ISO. Is it the extra stops of light and 120 frames in 4k? It doesn't sound like something that justifies such a higher price tag. Am I missing something?
I'll have a lot more in-depth look at this camera during the versus series but really it comes down to the better footage quality, the Dynamic Range, and the production level attachments and accessories available to the camera. This camera also has a global shutter vs the Pocket 6k pro's rolling shutter which helps remove a lot of warbling and other issues that rolling shutters cause. I can tell the difference in footage between the pocket 6k pro and the URSA G2 in post. Not massive, but the URSA G2 definitley has a much nices highlight rolloff and in general better look to the footage. But I'll be exploring that in the Versus series and talking about why you should buy it and why you shouldn't.
@@ArseniiSavitckii you're right! Always get those confused with this camera because everyone says it has a global shutter but it's rolling Shutter is fast enough you don't notice much 👍
This was very entertaining watching. I guess this was before BMD decided to lower the price of the 12k to the same price of the G2, right? In any case this is still an awesome camera I should rent one day and experience by myself. Thanks brother
Great video, I'm very interested in this camera, and ANY Blackmagic cameras to come. And Yay, Norwegian cup! Have you been to Norway? We're located in Haugesund, on the west coast.
Appreciate it! I've been to Norway a couple of years ago. Did like a road trip from Oslo to the Atlanterhavsveien and then kind of circled the coast to Bergen and Odda as well as a fee other places in the southern part of Norway. Definitely want to come back!
I appreciate your opinions on the ursa g2 as a great run and gun shoot. Though I had some additional questions from your video. How much battery life do you get? if you have another shoot in the alaska tunrda, how many v mount batteries do you bring? How does the camera do in warmer/humid conditions? I realize there's a lot of vents on the body and wondering about moisture getting in there. How is lowlight performance if you're shooting close to dusk, or maybe in a dark venue/concert setting? Some people say its heavy, but is it really? You seem to move fairly easy with it in your footage. Is it actually that hassle free to travel/fly with it? What follow focus system do you use to pull focus? (if at all). What other cameras have used outside of the blackmagic eco system? Do you ever feel you have to be careful carrying this camera out in the city? You can't be as discrete with it as a Sony A7sii or mirrorless hybrid. I'm considering either this or the canon c70 since they are in the same price point. The C70 has one additional stop of dynamic range + autofocus.
So glad you asked these questions as I'm currently making a new URSA G2 video for tomorrow. I'll be sure to address the questions you have in this video!
@@aploex they do, but honestly it's just flatter footage and slight change to the color profile. I kinda liked Gen 4 better for certain projects because it was a bit easier to deal with imo. Nothing wrong with either of them though!
I'm considering it but I'm doubtful given its lack of autofocus. I often work with weddings and sports, anyone using a G2 for this kind of work? What's your experience?
Honestly, I'd probably use it at a wedding though I don't do weddings. But I would also probably try and film a wedding like a documentary which I love using this camera for. But I get the autofocus being helpful! The Ronin 4D might actually be a good one for you to consider as well
@@Avidcomp Yep! Honestly should be interesting to see what they go with. Full frame to me isn't always what people make it seem it is. Honestly, unless this next camera has some sort of insane feature that's just groundbreaking, it would be better to wait and buy some G2's at heavily discounted prices because to me they are really good cameras and the risk of BMD having bad market forecasts again and not sticking to their price for this next product is too high for my liking after this 12k debacle
To me, it's the best performing camera BM ever released. I am not a huge fan of its design aesthetics (I wish the G3, if they ever do one, gets its design renewed for something closer to the Aja Cion or the fake URSA XP thing that was running on youtube [here : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-P-eU2_ACJmY.html ]) but otherwise it's an awesome camera. I love the fact it has ProRes 4444 XQ and how its rolling shutter performs as good or even a tad better than the Arri Alexa. Anyways, IF I had the money last May, I would have bought an URSA G2 instead of the Pocket 6K Pro (it's alright, but I'm not a fan at all of its formfactor).
Hi! Very nice video and interesting review ! I have heard that blackmagic customer service is awful. On the blackmagic users forum some have trouble with their ursaG2 and BM don't want to repair... on this price im so scary to buy one for my compagny but it look so what i want.. 😟🙁 what do you think about that ? (The bm customer service if problems)
Interesting, I've only had limited dealings with them but have heard some things before. But that might be an interesting video idea to do that Linus Tech tips computer company competition but for camera companies 🤔 Call through with general problems with cameras and then maybe get like a novice to call in and see how they do
Ive heard the opposite that they have the best everyone who has talked about it raves about how easy it is to get stuff fixed and how blackmagic does a great job with repairs.
haha the music actually compliments the video with what the lyrics. Inferring that when we get tired of cameras beauty we will leave it for something else eventually
no, a lot of people i know dont buy the pocket cameras as they weigh nearly the same and have bad features and arent really that great for anything but tripod youtube videos
