Your presentation skills and narrative make you truly a stand out amongst a sea of "cinema" youtubers! You do the work and it's not just a hobby for you! And what I REALLY LOVE about you is there are NO JUMP CUTS xDDD no youtuber who calls themselves a filmmaker should ever have jumpcuts so I applaud you good sir and I highly enjoyed this video!
You mentioned you've used the 4.6K before. Is there a significant improvement in image quality and highlight rolloff in the 12K? I'm talking strictly image quality, not frame rates or anything like that.
Im gonna WAIT ✋ till they come out with the a 16k camera.. Still not enough resolution. I say that even with My own eye sight that doesnt resolve past 4k.
Love the new setup man! This camera is definitely tempting for the price! I'm holding out hope the new generation URSAs have dual native ISO and slightly smaller package then it'd be perfect!
Hey, this video has been super helpful! I just got the Ursa 12K but found it gets quite warm even when idle, is this normal? How warm would you say your ursa gets?
Great review Flo. Image looks outstanding. I'm finding over time that I'm more and more content with my P4K. It actually feels like it'll have legs for a long time to come as long as I keep improving as a film maker. For now I've started collecting Zeiss Milvus glass as it's pretty future proof and for now will take my P4K image to the next level. In the new year I'm also going to upgrade my lights - probably my weakest point at present! Looking at the footage in this review, the 12k is a very interesting proposition compared to other offerings out there. Like the other Blackmagic cameras, it seems to blow anything 3-5x the price away! Like you, I think it'd be overkill for anything I have planned for the next few years but who knows. Nice to know Blackmagic are making these innovative and exciting products!
@@TexasTabla I haven't tried that one but I would be interested to try it. What are you using it on? I now have the 15mm f2.8, 25mm f1.4 (my fav), 50mm f1.4 and 100mm f2. All in de-clicked mode and with Zeiss LensGears. I'll probably get the 85mm f1.4 at some stage too. Just lovee the way they render colour and light. Pretty future proof too - hopefully I'll get 10 years out of them over many camera systems before getting bored °¬)
@@JonasStuart Im actually using the pocket 4k with the metabones .64 xl, and I agree these lenses are great not too many people use them. I use the canon mounts since I have a 5d also.
@TexasTabla I got the Nikon mount as they're cheap to adapt to canon (without contacts though) and have a manual, de-clickable aperture. I do find they they lose some sharpness (and no edge to edge sharpness) with the metabones. Focus fall-off isn't as sweet with the speedbooster either. Have you noticed that too? With the superspeeds plus metabones, the low light is magic on the P4K. I guess a lot of people don't use them due to price but the same optics in Zeiss cine glass are off the scale expensive!
Loved the review! Everything was very precise and to the point, answered some questions I had about the camera. I’m looking into renting or buying one for a documentary!
@@OfTwoLands thank you! We’re still in the early stages but I’m looking forward to it! Your videos have really helped me learn a lot about filmmaking so if we end up shooting this doc I’d love to send it your way to hear your thoughts.
Hey Flo, I loved the video! Would you ever consider using a matte box with the Ursa Mini Pro? Or do you see it as not as necessary? Also, would you recommend getting the Smallrig Matte Box, or the Smallrig Mini Matte Box? I'm trying to decide for the next part of my rig. Thanks for all you do!
Thanks !! I would for sure if I wanted to use my IRND filters. I have both the Tilta Mini and Smallrig MB, I prefer the Smallrig I would say just because you can use 2 filters. It depends what your type of shooting is. The mini ones are quite practicals. I haven't used the Smallrig mini but it looks pretty cool as well.
@@OfTwoLands That makes sense, I love the images you're able to produce with your Nisi filters. And thanks for your thoughts! I'll take that into consideration as I purchase my MB!
@@OfTwoLands if I can chime in. I too own the same multi camera set up. For the 12K I went with the Tilta MB-12 matte box . It is a clamp on that has a rail adapter. Reason I got this matte box was because the Arri Trays fit inside of it.
Can you handle the 12K all by yourself? How is its low light capability? Does lack of continuous autofocus bother you? Have you tried Sony FX6? Nice job, my man!
Thanks !! - Yes I can - Low light not amazing but usable - No I don't really miss autofocus No I haven't tried the FX6 but have seen beautiful content from it :)
Hi! Thanks so much for the review! I just got to you now) I have a question. If I use this camera for shooting feature films (or documentaries) does it have gyrodata? Like the pocket series? So that in Davinci it is possible to stabilize video clips? Or this camera does not write them?
Somehow just hearing you can export to Final Cut Pro in 8k ProRes made me think Blackmagic camera workflows may not be as limited to Resolve as I’d assumed.
Could you pelase tell me, is there an autofocus in this camera? And in case I shoot a documentary, eithout an assistant, would it be possible to put on focus and make an interview being in the frame and leaving the camera shoot alone? Thank you
With all that in mind, I would love to see you test the ursa broadcast G2, which as alot of the same features that the 12K has, but with a dual native ISO. It only lacks the 12k sensor, it only has a 6K one.
For me only With the 12k camera for me it like the moment is being capture because with good quality sound produce and images produce from a best screen image produce and true beautiful images get too I start love cameras good quality images like all images in 5pm and 6pm very good with 12k cameras and 6k plus does these editing it a love very beautiful it only need these 12k cameras and 6k cameras it seem very best moment in these time and sun Ray is becoming low every picture becoming another very beautiful plus the windows 🪟glass is tainted black in these and very beautiful pictures get in morning too but true get good images in 🌇🌅🌄 for the very sunny weather the very beautiful sea captured and all beautiful flowers and lot things because the cameras it so adorable work I have watched a video about it truly I understand it for me I love it I really love it I love images beautiful I love because these cameras really get all my love even will come to editing videos and photos I love it for black magic only for me only yes for me I love these images produce sunset and 5pm to 6pm and morning pictures and in very sunny weather beautiful sea record plus the editing pictures me I am learning I love to get new good software for editing like give the images look like paradise.
I find shooting in 12K handheld gives me a huge buffer around my 4K delivery. Image Stablilisation in DiVinci Resolve irons out all but the most extreme shakes, rattles and rolls.
I love BMD, got 2 Bmpcc6kpro, I sold my Komodo that I didn’t liked. Really look to this 12K, no crop, BMraw, that’s very very interesting. If this cam got ProRes I will take it now
Great video as always, those landscapes man. I have a quick semi unrelated question : I saw your 6K pro setup with the Tilta mini Follow Focus. I just got this duo myself and I was wondering how do you manage to use the follow focus on only one rod and deal with it skipping the grooves of the focus ring when you rack it a bit too fast. I use a rubber band between the lens and the rod to push them together but it doesn't seem ideal. P.S : Would it be fine for me to comment in French ?
Thanks a lot !! I haven't had any issues with the FF on one rod. I use the smallrig clamp with the Tilta rod. I don't remember it skipping the gears at all. Maybe you have a faulty one ? And yes you can comment in French :)
It's amazing that such a camera costs $ 6000 more or less. Over the years Blackmagic's Ursa line has always been a bit underestimated, but this 12K is getting the recognition it deserves, hopefully, in 2022 I should be able to rent it and mount it on Cooke S4s, I'm really curious to see this combo in action
Thanks for the review! Beautiful images. (also, the ND 1, 2, 3, 4 thing is a standard from older broadcast cameras i think. I agree tho, 0 should be no ND, not 1.)
It's not an OTS sensor like the Pocket 4K, Pocket 6K or URSA Broadcaster 2G. And it's not confirmed to be Fairchild like OG pocket, Cinema, Micro (non 4K) or 4.6K URSA. And technology wise it's really really interesting, it's a lot of data. And they can do the downscaling in camera or in post to give you the same result.
Would data rates be different on ProRes? When looking at 4K RAW vs ProRes the data rates aren't that different (infact better to shoot RAW). Is it just less hassle due to not having to transcode for stock sites or when working with external editors who will prefer ProRes?
I think like you said Prores would be similar or slightly heavier. And yes, Prores is widely accepted and usually the preferred codec especially if you don't edit the material yourself or for licensing purposes.
Sounds like you want an Mavo Edge tbh. How did you find the RS? its the one thing on the 6k that irks me. I thought I'd be getting a C70, but I just can't walk away from BM, the menus, image and screen, codec are incredible always. Hoping for a new cam from them that improves on the 6K pro, better RS, more ND (and please just put in IR) and maybe a new recording card but if Cfast works, no need to change.
Salut Super Camera revue...
Cheers, Flo
Hey man, unfortunately this was just to test it out, only had it for the month. I wish I could own it but it's a bit overkill for me. Back to the 6K Pro :)
This is AMAZING and convenient! Where did you purchased this?was it online or at a shop? Anyways, your content are all great! I hope you can do tutorials about this! I am planning to buy one one of these days...
Thank you for watching !! I don't think I will because it is not a camera that I would personally use. I always do reviews of products that I actually want to use or some that interest me a lot.
Fantastic review, and its surprising to see how mobile it can be for outdoor shoots. Since the 12k is the same price as the 4.6k, is it worth going for the 12? I personally don't have any need for that kind of quality, as 4k is plenty. You briefly mentioned it in your analysis, but the downscaled 4k on the 12k is probably identical with the 4.6k model?
Thanks a lot !! It really depends on what you need it for. The 12K is amazing for re framing, slow motion and of course high resolution. But if you need Prores for example then the 12K shoot only raw. I think the 4K looked great on the 12K as well but a few people said it is softer. Also the 12K will probably keep its value a bit longer.
@@OfTwoLands good to know. Thanks for the follow up :) I think I'm learning towards the 4.6 at this point for the more manageable file sizes. It's crazy how competitive these cameras are now. what was the battery life on the 4.6k model when you had it? And what IR filters do you use? If any
10:49 I knew about the mounting options from renting URSA 4.6 and now that I own 12k I got around this by installing a kondor blue cage. I've also become aware, from experience of using other 4.6k G2 cameras, that on original BM handles the threads tend to pop out either from the handle or from the body itself, and there's a self-tapping solution that can apparently solve that, but that's one of the reasons why I've decided not to go with BM's handle and got a Tiltamax/Kondor nato rail combo for mine, as this will reduce the risk of wearing out threads just from the screwing/unscrewing action.
I haven't experienced any overheating. The camera does get hot of course but nothing unusual. That being said I was filming in winter so cannot comment regarding using it in warm weather :)
Beautiful footage but I'm curious maybe you can make a video on how you are editing the 12K footage what kind of computer how strong is a computer thanks
I don't shoot indoor as much but if you're looking at the 12K then I would say the Ursa G2 is pretty solid! And of course the BMPCC6K works very well too, but the UMP is more studio oriented :)
Great review. Some of this footage looked familiar. Really nice. I have 2 Canon C70's. I think if I was gonna get something to compliment them, this is a very reasonable option after the price reduction.
i was going to get a c70 or r5c but then decided to get one of the Ursas probably the broadcast for the 6k with EF as it has all i need the pocket cameras dont, and the 12k is too much camera i dont need 8 or 12k its just going to bloat my files and cost me money buying media to record to
@@OfTwoLands I pretty much only shoot in BRAW, but it’s just a nice option to have. I always edit my own stuff, but in the event that I’m working for somebody who is using a different editor who doesn’t use Resolve (for whatever reason), prores would be good to have. Does the G2 have Prores? I’ve only used the pocket cams. Thanks for the video man!
4k is more than enough for everything any res higher than that is not going to benefit you except in cropping literally no other benefit and it increases costs for recording media
People tend to over think DR. It has 1 less true stop over the 4.6. Also the range is more optimized for Braw as they are in the sweet spot. Skin tones
@@OfTwoLands thanks for the precision. I need to try the camera by myself, I just don’t get it why nobody care about it and use it. For the price and the spec it’s unbelievable. Why blackmagic cut the price so fast is also curious. May I ask if you buy it or if Bm send it to you like Matteo bertoli ? Thanks.
@@donnieyen4 maybe there is your answer for the price cut; maybe BM went for high end flmmakers but they didnt adapt it (the 12K), so they cut the price in half and are going for YT-DPs hoping for higher selling numbers. Also, how do you know that Bertoli guy got it sent for free (probably for exchange of good words on the YT) by BM? I have noticed that this Bertoli kinda hated the G2 and much preferred the 6K over it, if I remember correctly even made a comparison test claiming how inferior the G2 is, but lately just loooves the 12K that has less DR, but same RS as the G2 (12K being at 8K). This is a strange behaviour for a serious DP, I must say, but it can be explained by a "freebie". On the other hand, I really hope there is an 8K full frame URSA with GS on the way, sth a bit more compact like Florent described as hoping for in the end. YT rumors, LOL! (I own the G2 and 6KPro ;)
Pretty sure iv seen people talk about the stops being better utilised in the 12k. While lower it's actually a cleaner image. Also to get most out of it, a good set of glass and filtration.
