If I only could choose or recommend ONE fly rod. It would be this all day long!!! Versatility is key especially if you don't have a desire to carry 2 or more rods with you onto the water!

I’m a little late here however, great video and I did subscribe. For Largemouth Bass. The 3 and 4 pounders. You really think the 6wt is the way to go. I do use a 7 wt Lamson and they seem to give that a workout. But I was wanting to drop a size down for versatility etc. trout , bass. All freshwater. So you think the 6wt Clearwater will do the job ? Second question. If you had your time back. Would you have sealed the cork on the Clearwater. I believe in another video you were a little disappointed about the amount of filler in the cork. But I get it $250.00 US is not big coin on a rod. Thanks.

I have a few clearwaters. The 6wt is my all around rod and pretty much reach for it 80% of the time. The corks on all of them are bad except my switch rod. I will wait till the filler gets really bad(probably spring time) and then restore them. They’re a great value but yeah, that 6wt just does a lot. Hope this helps

Hook keeper and alignment dots should be the first thing you look for on any fly rod at any price level . Minor details…. But a very nice necessity .👍

They are “nice to haves” but i am more focused on the feel and performance. The other stuff is just a bonus. I get what you’re saying, everyone has their preferences 🙂

I am done with Orvis, they no longer make a fly rod with a hook keeper (an important feature for versatility). Also, I use a 9’ 3 or 4 wt. as my all-around, I have landed every fish you listed. And, I use a 6 lb. tippet on those rods, so I still get them in fast. Some of us want maximum bend - remember, in most waters the majority of fish are small. Yeah I know, wind limits you with those weights, but the fun…and besides, someone has to catch the bait!

I really do like hook keepers too! Probably a cost saving measure marketed as something else for them. It’s not the brand but the 6wt that I was gunning for in this video. I love 4 weights too and I say to each their own! Appreciate you chiming in and sharing your experience. Btw, catching small fish a lot of fun! Tight lines👍

Simple to add a hook keeper yourself.

I only have freshwater experience with fly fishing so I cannot really help you out. I highly recommend checking out the Orvis Guide to Fly Fishing for more info. I wish I be more help but rather be honest than be “know-it-all”. Best of luck on the water eh!

🌴 So , is the 6 wt an all around have fun rod ? 🤔 Hummm, could be , I lived up north - mid- upper Wisconsin for quite s few years fished everything with fly rod , came down to west central Florida aloooong time ago fished fresh water here , and it was fun ! But after starting to fish saltwater - which is a whole new ball game ! I truly fell in love 😍 so is it possible to fish saltwater with a 6 wt , hell ya ! But 👈🏼 you could set your self up for disaster, the fish down her don’t play by the same set of rules as fresh water , they try to cut you off on barnacle encrusted docks , mangroves, oysters or take you down into sharp rock pockets, , and then the big one, the size of the fish ,Ya never know what’s going to grab your fly ! So the only way to beat ‘em at their game heavier tackle , appropriate equipment an 8- 9 wt rod and reel with a really good drag ,with a floating wt fwd line with a tapered heavy leader and depending what species match the tippet , but at least 20 lb . Now , I’ve just started fishing with a cheap 5 wt it’s a Wally World Cortland combo - why ahhh because I’m an idiot , I guess it’s the challenge thing ,so a 6 wt is totally exceptable , could you loose fish ,yes will you loose fish yes ,🤔 Will it be fun Hell Ya ! ( Warning ! Kids do not try this on the water as it may become addictive, and that’s only if you can pry the fly rod out of your parents hand ! ) 👍 😄

Yeah. Haven’t ever targeted saltwater with the fly rod but have read the warning labels! Haha! Heck a 12” mackerel fights like a 16” brookie so I totally can understand the “go big or go home” mentality. Cheap rods? I have a tough time recommending expensive rods cause the cheap ones just get the job done. To a point of course! I heard great things about Cortland rods so you might not have a dud. Thank you for the comment and giving the video a gander. Keep those lines tight bud!

For trout
@joshuabennett7334

It’s less about the type of fish than the size and weight of fly you are throwing. You can’t really throw massive streamers on a 5 weight and a 8 weight is a bit aggressive for a parachute Addams but both a 8 weight and a 4 weigh will catch the same size trout.

there are much better non-orvis rods for the same or even less money. orvis is a shorthand for overpriced.

@@harlanmorris6878 Well, it really depends on what kind of fishing you do. There is no such thing as all round great fly rod. If somebody says there is one he/she is lying. But one thing is for sure - Orvis sells overpriced fly rods. If you ask me I'd say go for second hand Sage XP in 5wt 9ft :)))
