I never had that. What's so bad about it? That's it's cheap or that it's Canadian? :D Also to be fair, he said he didn't much like any of them since he didn't live bourbons. So he picked the two non bourbon blends. And as blends they should be the most complex and interesting out of that selection.

Guys, I am currently in Israel and there are two known distilleries here. We visited the Golan distillery and I can tell you that the cask strength Golani Black (two grain) is one of the best whiskies I have ever tasted.

Never had Seagrams or Evan Williams before, never seen it to buy in a bar or shop here in Belfast. Never been a big Bourbon fan tbh. I did recently order a taster of Balcones 100 proof Rye and a Michters Rye online as I’d never had Rye before. Doubt I will again either, not my bag. But who knows, never say never. I used to hate Scotch and was strictly an Irish guy (Bush, Redbreast, Green Spot et al) but now I’m a Scotch convert, loving my Ardbegs, Laphroig and Talisker now too! Mainly thanks to these guys, since I started watching the Vault & Tribe vids, I’ve been getting more tasting boxes and expanding my horizons. Good job Daniel & Rex. 🥃🤘👍

That paint one is pretty accurate for me! Is UHU a thing in the US? Gluesticks and glues, typically found in the office and even schools? Had BBQ with my old man, tried Wild Turkey 101: We both went "UHU!" on the same time. If you eat something with - I guess garlic and onions and such? - you'll find those notes in bourbons! Of course on the next day it's a whole different story.

There is a solvent component that is strongly associated with latex, made by several species of plants that is found in many white (and a few red) oak species. The PVC glue is probably a polymer resin that's a catalyst in the glue that is also found in many tree saps, from spruce to walnut. It is a chain that is a mirror image of some of the collagen proteins found in milk paint and rabbit skin glue used by artists replicating Ancient canvases, and museum boards. For example: the Mona Lisa is painted on a piece of Poplar soaked in rabbit skin glue and milk paint with layers of tempura, and then oil paint on top. Many conservators have said that it smells like Brandy, Scotch, or other types of aged spirits, like certain dark rums. I'm sure those same protein profiles are being picked up on the nose.

I was surprised to see Evan Williams on a list of 6, even if it was last. It was a pleasant surprise when I bought it on a lark. It's uncomplicated, on the sweet side, approaching Jameson level politeness. For $12 (when and where I bought it) you have a fantastically drinkable bourbon that's not likely to rub anyone the wrong way.

This episode got me thinking, and it might be a good question for a Whiskey Vault episode. Since Seagram's 7 says it's 75% grain alcohol, what percentage of say something like a Johnnie Walker Black label is grain alcohol? I'd always assumed they only added the grain alcohol in small amounts just to help dilute the proof, but for all I know some of my favorite blended Scotch is also 70%+ grain alcohol.

The story there rests in the regulatory differences between Scotch and American whiskies. -A “blended Scotch” refers to any mix of malt whisky (made from 100% malted barley in a pot still) and grain whisky (which may use other grains or distillation methods). Everything in the finished product meets the UK requirements to be called “whisky.” - An American “blended whiskey,” on the other hand, is only required consist of 20% actual whiskey; the rest of the volume can be made up of neutral spirits.

As they said many times, it's just a matter of pattern matching. If you semelled the same molekule once that reminds both of you of something funky, then that's just what your brain does :) I sometimes have whiskeys that just smell like glue because there's a very widely used glue in Germany that you used for every little bit of crafting as a child and that smell is just programmed in. And some whiskeys just smell like that to me, no matter how good they are :D

If I walk across every store in my country, every duty-free and even cross the border for a cheaper huge alcohol store, I don't think I can find more than 300 kinds of whiskey. My to-try-list has little over 180 bottles and that's practically everything I can possibly get here apart from obvious mainstream like Jack, Jim, Johnnie, Grants, Jameson.. 411. That's a proper dedication :D

I think the order in which you present the glasses to people might affect the results. Maybe randomize it. I don't know how that would affect the editing of the video, but I think it is worth considering it.
