The hugely celebrated production of The Motive and the Cue transfers to the Noël Coward Theatre this December, following a sold-out run at the National Theatre. www.nationaltheatre.org.uk/pr...

Sam Mendes directs Johnny Flynn as Richard Burton, Mark Gatiss as John Gielgud and Tuppence Middleton as Elizabeth Taylor, in this fierce and funny new play by Jack Thorne, offering a glimpse into the politics of a rehearsal room and the relationship between art and celebrity.
1964: Richard Burton, newly married to Elizabeth Taylor, is to play the title role in an experimental new Broadway production of Hamlet under John Gielgud’s exacting direction.
But as rehearsals progress, two ages of theatre collide and the collaboration between actor and director soon threatens to unravel.
The Motive and the Cue opens at the Noël Coward Theatre from 9 December.

Saw it yesterday. Absolut blast… went by so fast. The moment the final lights went dark the auditorium rose as one unit and gave them the standing ovation they deserved. This play is so good. Go see it everyone!

This definitely needs to be filmed and shown either in cinema's or on TV, if only for those of us who physically can't get to London (or wherever) to see it.

Saw it this evening. Best play I've ever seen! Surprising funny in many spots, and totally captive audience at other times. Mark Gattis and Johnny Flynn just excellent and really enjoyed Tupperance Middleton's performance. And yes the ending!

Oh for the love of all that's holy, could you put this on Nat Theatre Live @ Home soon? So few live in a city with theatres that bring in these brilliant shows. We are starved here--STARVED. Help us, Nat Theatre Live. You're our only hope.

We really need more of this released to movie theatres, so those with disabilities aren't forced to miss out.
@jolorna3654
@jolorna3654 3 месяца назад
NT Live does exactly that. Also, if you have an Access card for your disabilities (costs about £15 for 3 years if you have the right paperwork to qualify) then you can book access tickets at most theatres - wheelchair friendly, autism friendly, closed caption or audio described performances etc.

Matthew Rhys would make an incredible Burton… I trained with him and he was obsessed with him and did the best vocal impression I’ve ever heard.

@@raymofarrell19 he was a real delight. He was only 18…. Full of energy… jumping about and on you all the time. He was good at everything. We got drunk a lot… argued over The rugby… but you just knew he had something special. He was very kind, thoughtful and very very funny. He would do Burton I would do Hopkins and another mate would do Connery

@christophercooper4149 a proper Welshman - passionate about the rugby! Sounds like a very decent, hard-working man, and you definitely seemed to have great times impersonating Burton, Hopkins and Connery with Matthew and your mates.

@@raymofarrell19 RADA was very magical…. It was an old 30’s building in Bloomsbury. It just smelt of great actors. Gielgud would appear sometimes…. The council meetings were hosted by Lord Attenborough, Hopkins would attend often. Matthew would still call our teachers sir and miss. It took him time to relax enough to use their first names. I remember when we did display fights we practiced in front of the academy, friends, family. He and Martin Ledwith did a sword fight from Robin Hood, Matthew obviously playing Robin. He swung onto stage on a rope and they gave an incredibly funny but action packed performance
@raymofarrell19
@raymofarrell19 15 дней назад
@christophercooper4149 visits from Gielgud, Dick Attenborough and Tony Hopkins to RADA?! Must have a lot more great stories where the Robin Hood one came from! Just brilliant bearing them from yourself of course. I'm a huge fan of many of these actors (Burton and Hopkins in particular without any disrespect to Matthew), am studying Drama and Performance as one of my modules in an Arts & Humanities course I'm doing at home here in Ireland, and I am also considering auditioning for my first theatrical part in a local theatre company's production of a play by Hugh Leonard called 'Da' to be performed in October, its nerve-racking but I imagine its also something new and enjoyable to try out considering I have a massive interest in it!

Just to add some balance to this comment section, I saw it this afternoon and thought it was awful. Superficially witty but fundamentally shallow writing. Caricature rather than character. The fact it is so highly praised is a sign that we are living in a philistine age. (However, Tuppence Middleton was good).
