Thank you all for joining me on a beautiful (and very tiring) day-hike in the Western North Carolina mountains. Traversing a brutal section of the Mountain to Sea Trail we have some good conversation, deal with blisters and enjoy a nice lunch by a the creek.
Thanks for watching.

funny watching this now. Your vehicle has changed a couple times, the camera is definitely better now but overall your videos have stayed very consistent. Would be interesting to see side by side comparisons of the gear :)

Luke, you produce great outdoor videos and I love your positive attitude! Done a lot of miles on the AT and other trails. I am not as tough. I hate the pain of a blister. I have found that I can feel a "hot spot" coming on and I use mole skin early and head off a blister. When you are out for multiple days a piece of mole skin can stay on for several days (though you should change it to monitor infection). A little bit larger piece I have found stays on better also. I would rather forget my sleeping bag than go out hiking with no mole skin!

Part 3: I would recommend the Tanawha Trail if you guys haven't done it before. You can make the hike as long as you want it to be and the views are Beautiful! If you have any questions let me know. Happy to help. I will see if I can get away from the family on Saturday. That would kick ass! Thanks for the invite guys.

Why didn't you just put a band aid on as soon as you felt that blister coming on . If i do that i don't feel a thing more from it. Makes the trip much more comfortable, you save the pain killer and the risk of infection. No reason to be a tough guy when it comes to things like that 😃

6 - 8 hour hike huh? Wow you have a lot of options my friend. If you want to keep to the Blue Ridge Parkway there is a lot that you can do. You could start at Beacon Heights and do a portion of the Tanawha Trail. Go up to Rough Ridge and check out the killer views. You guys could hike that 3 hours one way and then head back. I'm running out of space so I will reply again in a second.

i need all the hear that someone would need im planning on buying my pack from cqmelbak rated 20-25 pounds. and a tent and sleeping bag. I have a Garmin Oregon 550t gps receiver and I want to get a pentax wg-3 gps camera waterproof. do you have any suggestions on the other gear I need? plus a sleeping bag and tent? thanks
@tboy221
@tboy221 11 лет назад
after I get all the equipment I need im going to hike section A of the Pacific Crest Trail. section A starts at the Mexican border and goes for 124 miles. if you want to hike it with me im open to that idea. I can accommodate you in my guest room here in southern California. I think it will take me all winter to get all the hiking essentials I need so maybe next year. I have section A loaded on my Garmin GPS receiver and I can load everything to you.

speaking of the tripod. there is a device that you can attach to a trecking pole that will hold your camera so you can hold it out in front of you. I think I will buy a trecking pole and also get that mount for a camera

The hydration bladder in the freezer trick is the real deal. I read on one manufacturer's website that they recommend doing that. I haven't done that for fear of plastic particulates releasing into the bag when frozen.

Enjoyed watching this old vid during lockdown. As an ex infantry soldier only one word with regarding your feet. Foot powder, foot powder, foot powder! Never under estimate the power of Foot powder. Those socks you were wearing should be Ok as they were outdoor Mamout brand. Make sure you put plenty on your feet to prevent blisters and maybe inside your boot. Enjoyed watching these old vids Luke stay safe Buddy

Hey Luke, nice video; you're fortunate to have ready access to so many trails and parks. I live in Fort Myers so Labelle is just up the road, though I've only had occasion to pass through a few times, I only know it by reputation: rural, some nice country, but a bit "hicks in the sticks". I remember my first time driving through on the way to West Palm Beach and thinking, "That's it? That was the town??"
@TheOutdoorGearReview

Haha I personally think La Belle is a hell hole. When I was a kid I definitely saw some of the bad aspects of that town, from drugs to murder. Maybe it has grown up some since I was there years ago. Be well my friend. - Luke

Luke. I know this video was seven years ago but this is our first time seeing it. I'm sure that's a perfectly fine trail but that trail, in this video on that given trip, gave both my fiance and I the creeps. Did not feel good about it. I know. That sounds weird but that's just the gut feeling both of us had. But...since you're ok it's all good. 😀

Part 2: You could do any number of sections of the Mountain to Sea Trail. It follows most of the Parkway up here so you could start at any point really. You guys could also drive out to Linville and hike the Gorge. There are a ton of different trails out there too. Grandfather Mountain is another option.

That would be a GREAT place to do a Truck camping episode. You could bring your wife and kids and show what a family could do on a weekend of camping and hiking in such a place. By the way you said it was a day trip it can't be too far away and wouldn't and it be expensive trip too film and it MAY inspire others to get out and actually do something. when my kids were younger, I use to do the same thing you do now. Now my Grandkids want to go with me when I go exploring. It feels good and I totally enjoy them learning about what's left of our wilderness and how to survive in situations they may run into. Your video hit on things that kids now days need to know. Most of the parents now think that going to a city park is getting out where the wild squirrels live. Keep it up, maybe they'll get the hint.

1:08 ..Ouch! I use folding tiny scissors from eBay to cut a shape around the edges of the blister, and cut a hole over the size of the open blister that has the damaged and separated skin removed. Then, I put moleskin over the moleskin “donut” to equalize the pressure on the blister from the hiking shoe. I wear new hiking shoes around town to avoid any problems on the trail.

i know this video is older than dirt but one thing you can do to prevent blisters on long hikes or road marches is to wear either dress socks under your regular socks if you are too macho for the second option or if you don't embarrass easily wear women's stockings (short ones or cut off ones) under your regular socks. both of these will greatly reduce friction, though you still have to keep dry or change socks if you do get wet. also apply corn starch or foot powder frequently.
