The past several months I've spent a lot of time searching out and photographing waterfalls on the west coast of British Columbia. In this video, I travel to Myra falls located in Strathcona Provincial Park on the central part of Vancouver Island. I explain some of the techniques that I use to create texture in water using Photoshop.
Breakthrough Photography has been very kind in supporting my photography and lucky for me Breakthrough make some of the best filters currently on the market. For more info be sure to check out Breakthrough at goo.gl/wCvJRi

Uncle grumpy always seems so surprised when he has the place to himself lol. it must be nice to just naturally get the place to yourself I have to be a grey haired old crank and work at it to get that result...but it's getting easier as I get older 😆 Love the video it's soo beautiful there!

Excellent work Adam. In your last video I posted a comment saying that I was losing interest in your channel because I thought you were moving away from what drew me to the channel in the first place, the capture, editing and presentation of still images. In this video you have put those fears to rest, producing a body of work that has something in it for everyone, video makers and still photographers alike......not an easy task. This is a first class production that puts you firmly back on my favourites list of landscape photographers and has me looking forward to the next edition. Thank you!

I am so jealous Adam. For me to get to a waterfall, coming from Oxfordshire, it involves a LOT of travel, which generally, time and funds do not allow. Another excellent video and I will definitely sign to your newsletter. I must say that I watch a lot of YT from Mads, Gavin, Simon and more, but I do not enjoy any in the same way as I do yours. Keep up the great work and keep feeding my love of waterfalls and mountains lol.

Thanks Adam. This was very helpful. Moving foliage next to a waterfall is a typical problem when shooting at slow shutter speeds. I am looking forward to going out and trying your technique. I usually shoot several images at various shutter speeds with water looking for the "right" compositional speed for the image in post processing. It's hard to tell off the back off the camera when you are in the field as to whether you got it right. Since I have saved many of these files, I am going to go back and process again trying the brush techniques on water and foliage and see what I come up with.

Looks like an amazing area to explore Adam, I enjoy those locations that provide serval options for interesting compositions. In the first set of shots you shared I really liked the detail you captures in the rock walls, take care mate!
@QuietLightPhoto

Cheers, Andrew! Yeah, Strathcona is a really lovely park, lots of wilderness in this park that isn't explored that much, very rugged country.
@Andrew_marr
@Andrew_marr 6 лет назад
Adam Gibbs the fact that you had the place to yourself was brilliant. I suppose the more rugged it is the more likely this will happen.
@QuietLightPhoto
@QuietLightPhoto 6 лет назад
It's not hard to get away from people on the Island much of it is mountains and forest. Strathcona is a massive park that for the most part has few roads, lots of peaks and very rugged countryside. It even has Canadas tallest waterfall 1443 feet but its quite hard to get to. Perhaps one day I'll venture in, I would imagine Australia has lots of wonderful secluded wilderness areas?
@Andrew_marr
@Andrew_marr 6 лет назад
Adam Gibbs yes, we have plenty of untouched wilderness here particularly in Western Australia, it's also difficult to get to some of these areas because of how remote they are. We have plenty of space! 😀

It has been cleared by the staff, still not that great. If you work your way down the stream there is lots of opportunities for great pictures. It's still a great spot to visit for a couple of hours. Myra falls - Three weeks ago you would not be standing where you where, it was under water. I had never seen it that high, and I visit the fall quite often. I see you were able to get your drone to connect. For some reason mine did not, could not get more than 3 satellites. My only question is did you miss Karst falls? It's in between Lupin and Myra Keep up the great work...

I really enjoyed this video tutorial Adam - as I do pretty well all of the videos you share. Love the waterfall images you show us here and thank you for sharing the combined image technique. Look forward to trying this. Just one question - on the shots with slower shutter speed - do you use ND filters?
@QuietLightPhoto

Lately, I've been using an ND combination filter Breakthrough X4 Dark Circular Polarizer bit.ly/2uB6adU great for keeping the shutter speed down and having a thin profile to mitigate vignetting.

good day Adam. how are you? learned a lot from your video. may I ask what is your camera focused on when you are taking the picture presented between time 4;55 to 6;00 of your video. may I ask are you using a single point or multipoint focus? thanks

Interesting technique to try to file in my failing brain. :) I think that very first shot at 1/800 with the spray was perfect. Dumb question, but when you block the sun how do you do it? With your thumb or finger or something else? From the top of the frame downward? If you could show this in action some day. Hint hint. Thanks again.

I wasn't quite clear on that one, I meant to say that a sun star works best if you hide the sun slightly behind an object such as a tree branch or something

Hi, Adam. I have been trying to figure out how to combine two photos with different focus points. Using a mask may work on my two roses, each with spot metering focus, one in focus, one out of focus. I'll let you know if it works. Thanks for that tip. Have a great shoot.

Great idea, Adam. Never considered combining two images to control the water textures (or leaf movement) so thanks! I'd like to try it out right away, but we've had little rain in the last few weeks and water is down. Wish we had as nice a strong flow as you had here. Do your boots have a special sole to avoid slipping or are they just the basic rubber? I wear Muck boots and they are decent but still skid a bit at times. As always a great series of images and nice presentation.

Thanks, Stephen! Boots are pretty good but they do slip from time to time. The rock in this area was really quite sticky so no problem. Cheers!

I have a basic question Adam. To get the two different effects you had to use different shutter speeds. That means you either varied the aperture or ISO to get the SS you wanted. I thought doing that may create problems in PS. Did you change your aperture or ISO to get the desired result? I assume aperture so you limit any noise. Or did you tweak both some? Great technique. I really want to learn this one.

I adjusted both iso and aperture on most of the images. The noise from higher iso is minimal with the Nikon D850 and to be honest would be minimal with most cameras. If I was just upping the shutter speed for a specific part of the image such as a shrub to one side then I might just adjust the f/stop and make sure that I was focused on that spot so that depth of field wasn't a huge deal.. Hope this helps? best thing to do is just go outside and take a few images and try it out. Let me know how it works out.

Love the video and the shots you got. The tutorial on combining shots and why was helpful. Random question: do rubber boots have good traction in the water? Around here (Maryland and West Virginia USA) many of our rocks in the water are algae covered. I have not had the guts yet to step into the water with a tripod and camera over fear that I will slip and ruin my camera, but I know some places I love that the only good angle for photographing will be in the river.

@QuietLightPhoto 6 лет назад
Yeah, you have to be careful because algae on rocks can really ruin your day. At this location the boots worked great, my last video at Englishman River the rock are extremely slippery and the boot didn't work so great. boots with felt on the soles are excellent on slippery rocks, I believe you can get them from fly fishing shops.

When you’re combining the two images could you give some guidelines as to which areas you prefer to show movement in the water or is it simply where you “feel” it looks right?
@QuietLightPhoto
@QuietLightPhoto 5 лет назад
Yep you've got it, just paint to taste and if it's too much just reverse it, very effective.

Douglas Bradshaw I believe I did on the last shot, not so much to get rid of glare but to slow the shutter down a bit, thanks!

ISO 31? That is an expanded ISO, is there any precaution you need to consider when expanding the ISO? My D800E will expand to ISO 64, but I have not tried it.

No, no precautions works great!

📸is not just 🆗 but ➕➕➕& I always 👍. Why not to explain - just a little - the luminosity masks and TKV5, how to make a composite, choose a luminosity mask, apply or select and work on it, just that, not the whole panel, it may help some of the photographers watching your wonderful videos and it may help Tony too? Just a suggestion... Merci pour tout ce que tu fais de toute façon.
