I watched Arrival the first time on "accident". I was home alone and just looking for a movie I'd never seen before. I searched for sci-fi movies and thought the alien invasion movie would be a fun thing to relax too. I ended up crying on my couch and have loved this movie every since.

I have a similar experience with Arrival as well. Myself and a couple other people got together to play Risk: Legacy, and one of them throw’s up Arrival to play in the background on a whim. Let me say, that movie quickly took our attention away from the game just because of how great a movie it is. I had never seen anything like it, but was completely mesmerized by what the film was trying to say.

I watched it on a plane when I was going out to meet my wife and some friends in Spain, and it blew me away and held my attention for the entire length of the flight. I got off the plane wanting to do nothing else but talk about Arrival, while everyone else just wanted to talk about our holiday.

Can't fault you for feeling that way. I think I'd've gone the same way as Mikey, but it would've been the toughest decision out of any this playoff presented me.

Spider-verse hit me personally much the same way Mikey describes the joy-joy feelings of watching Fury Road. My first thought after watching Spider-verse was “holy shit, I haven’t seen this kind of leap forward in movie making since Fantasia.” Fantasia was a benchmark cinematic experience. Was. Spider-verse is just leaps and bounds beyond any animated feature. Fury Road is a feast for the senses, but to me, there is dissonance between its moral core and its exploding doof warrior facade. That tension nags at me when I watch it, and to me it is a distraction. Spider-verse still would have lost to Arrival, because Arrival is just that unique and powerful of an emotional experience. Anyway, Mikey is the spokesperson for the soul of cinema and the exemplar of positivity in criticism, and this series of videos is an outstanding example of why that is. So we leap for the play button every time there’s a new Filmjoy thang. Right now it’s great to have something like that, isn’t it?

Loved this series. It's been fun hearing you articulate why some films went deeper for you. It didn't matter whether I agreed with you or not, the fun of it is being excited about hearing why certain films mean so much to people and how they affect us differently. Kudos Mikey. Looking forward to more.

@Inscriptions37

So many emotions. Whoever's doing the editing for this channel is its stealth MVP. I think I somehow knew via linguistic temporal loop that Arrival would beat Parasite, though I think Parasite is just slightly better and more precise on a technical, storytelling level. Arrival had me tearing up from its first scene and I didn't even really know why. Then by the end I was bawling silently, both thankful and regretful that I never saw it in a theater. I love that this series made a mock competition feel purely celebratory, without the vitriol that seems to permeate every aspect of life these days, and I hope that you're finding some safe way to watch this year's new movies, Mikey; There've been some bangers, on which I eagerly await your thoughts.
@MrJagermeister

I went back three times to see Arrival in the theater. Denis Villenueve just doesn’t miss and with Bradford Young’s cinematography and the late composer Jóhann Jóhannsson (who died far too young at 48, and had previously done the scores for Villenueve’s Prisoners and Sicario), Arrival was just a masterclass in film making. Seeing the Heptapod aliens just *towering* over Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner, drenched in fog and mist and sound that booms, it was truly a magnificent film to see in the theater. I feel like all of Villenueve’s work deserves the big screen - Sicario’s razor tight pacing (especially in it’s nighttime infiltration in the tunnels), the many-years long search of Prisoners with a father and a detective refusing to relent, and then Blade Runner 2049 is a masterpiece that I was surprised to not see on this series - one of the best sci fi sequels ever made, expertly world building and with Roger Deakins’ cinematography and stellar special fx (not to mention the music from Hans Zimmer and Benjamin Wallfisch, who took over for Jóhannsson after they mutually agreed a more expansive sound was needed) and now Dune (with Greig Fraser’s stunning cinematography and Hans Zimmer returning, and pitch perfect casting). I think Villenueve is quickly becoming one of my favorite filmmakers, in a very difficult matchup. I caught Dune 4 times in the theater (two IMAX, one Dolby, one 3D) and holy hell, was it an experience that ranks up there with seeing films like Gravity and Interstellar and Fury Road in the largest, loudest theater possible. At any rate, I loved your comment about your experience with Arrival. I was crying my eyes out in the theater, big manly tears of course, but tears nonetheless. I’m happy to see this one take the title in Mikey’s matchup.

I was with you all the way, with the slight exception that I think for me I might have pitted Spiderverse against Arrival but Arrival still would have won I think. I also have a very personal connection to this movie and that carries a lot of weight for how I compare it to others. I had a really intense spiritual awakening/mental break last year (I actually messaged Mikey during it 😅 he was very kind to respond) and during that period was experiencing time very differently and it felt non-linear and there was a point where I felt like I needed to watch Arrival and it was a damn near religious experience. I will never forget the way the vibrations coming through the speakers when the heptopods Arrive in their first scene and when they speak.. it literally caused my body to shake. It was a very singular experience and aside from everything technically wonderful about this movie, it just holds such a personal significance, it was really nice to see where it landed for you. 💛

My Finals would have ended with a draw between Parasite and Fury Road (copout I know) so all in all I found myself nodding in agreement throughout most of these videos. Main difference for my tournament would be Hunt For The Wilderpeople marching right through to the semis. Because as you say several times, personal connection and all that.

it always astounds me how much people love Parasite. as someone who grew up poor I felt almost nothing watching Parasite, it just made sense, it reminded me of my life, of things I had to do and decisions I had to make to get out of poverty. so it was just dull for me, like looking at a beautiful perfect swiss watch, I admired it’s qualities and it is obviously an incredible piece of engineering and artistry but… have you ever felt an emotion looking at a watch?

That was an awesome end to an awesome series. I had a good time the whole way through and I loved hearing about why you picked what you picked as the winner. I also deeply, deeply fucking love that you talk about your illness. As a person with severe health problems, it helps me feel less alone and less hopeless, less like I'll never get off the floor ever again. I hope you know how much what you're doing matters to people.
@MrJagermeister
@MrJagermeister 2 года назад
100% agree that what Mikey does here matters to people more than he probably realizes. That episode in particular really meant a lot to me. I’m a chronic pain guy, who knows that my best days are behind me and each one going forward will be harder than the last. It’s isolated me to the point where I almost never leave the house anymore, and the people that know me best are my doctor, chiropractor, and pharmacist. Movies are my connection to humanity still, and I watch them religiously. Even though I struggle to sit still and comfortably in the theater, I still make it a point to go every week thanks to AMC’s A-List and just see whatever came out that week, completely blind (having avoided all trailers, review scores, synopsis, etc.). Being able to just be bowled over by a film that I never saw coming is one of my greatest joys in life right now. And just in the past month or so, we’ve had new films from Guillermo del Toro (Nightmare Alley, which I just saw last night), Wes Anderson (The French Dispatch), Edgar Wright (Last Night in Soho), Denis Villenueve (Dune - which I saw 4 times… 2 IMAX, 1 Dolby, 1 3D), Cary Joji Fukunaga (No Time to Die), and then there’s a new one from Paul Thomas Anderson (Licorice Pizza) and the Wachowski Sisters (The Matrix: Resurrections - the return of Thomas Anderson lol). Not that long ago, it seemed that all hopes for the fate of theaters ever returning were resting on Christopher Nolan’s film Tenet, and I have to say I was pretty worried they wouldn’t make it, so I’m thrilled to see that Spider-Man is selling out my local IMAX and Dolby Theater, even on weekday matinees. I don’t know what I’d do without movies, honestly. And the truly *great* TV series on HBO, Netflix, etc. as well as playing games (the small victories of beating a boss, reaching a new level, unlocking a cool cosmetic, or meeting the conditions for a trophy/achievement are all little things that help keep me motivated and feel like I’m actually doing something on days where I can’t even manage to get out of bed). I wish you, personally, more good days than bad. I’m sure you know that you are more than just your illness, as much as it might beg to differ sometimes. All my best to you in your fight with that floor, and I hope that we all manage to collectively get up off of it.

I'm not sure I'd've agreed with you on all the "bouts" over the course of the series, but that's what makes it special: it's what works best for you, what had a personal connection to you, what moved you, what stuck with you. I appreciate so much the exercise of it (one of my fondest memories of childhood is taking a bunch of my brother's albums and making him do similar comparisons until we declared one "the best"), love the analysis of the films, and especially the articulation of their connection to you. Thank you!
@MrJagermeister
@MrJagermeister 2 года назад
Thoroughly enjoyed this collection of reflections on your favorite films. I’m so sad to hear that you haven’t been to a theater since Rise of Skywalker (though I can see how that might alone do it to anyone). Just in the past few weeks, we’ve had Denis Villenueve’s Dune, Cary Joji Fukunaga’s No Time to Die, Edgar Wright’s Last Night in Soho, Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch, Guillermo del Toro’s Nightmare Alley, and then there’s Paul Thomas Anderson’s Licorice Pizza and the Wachowski’s Matrix sequel. So many great film-going experiences lately (I’ll throw in Christopher Nolan’s Tenet even though it wasn’t my favorite of his). But ALL of those are films that I’m so glad I was able to see in a theater. I’m fortunate to live in a place where I can go to my local AMC and it’s not busy enough during weekday matinees to the point where, if I go to see a movie that came out the previous Thurs/Fri, I might be one of the only people there on a Mon-Thurs. That said, they do clean up after every showing, have disinfectant wipes and sanitizer stations, installed HVAC systems to filter the air more strongly, and they ask that you wear masks when you’re not actively eating (something people are being less respectful about, but some adhere). I feel confident enough with the vaccine and booster and mask to still go, and I feel like the theater needs our support now more than ever, but I understand (especially if you live in a busier, metropolitan area) that it just might not be time for you to go back yet. So I hope you do feel comfortable to go back soon enough, Mikey! Thanks again for this series, I loved it (though I’ll never forgive you for not pitting Lady Bird and Birdman up against each other last week, lol.

What a lovely journey you took us on here, Mikey. Thank you! I'm stunned, awed, and (told to me by my great-great descendent in a memory) not surprised Arrival won! Amazing! I saw this movie in theatres with a friend, on a whim, knowing nothing about it; and the story, the visuals, and the concept of circular linearity grabbed me a didn't let go. My love of it felt very personal, though, and by that very nature struck me that it couldn't be received similarily by anyone else. I felt "this is what it is to me because of what I bring into it." How foolishly naive I was! I wanted it to "win," but never imagined it would. But in the end it was that notion of personal connection that propelled it along. It's beautiful, abstract, and stunningly special :-)

Your meditations on arrival sparked something in me about why it is also my favorite movie. I recently learned that I'm autistic, and for much of my life I pondered whether I was an alien. So much of this movie is about communication through obvious and less obvious barriers, which resonates with so much of my life experience. Coupled with the experiences of grief and living in multiple worlds, this movie plays on so many personal chords that it might as well be a concert pianist. Mad Max was an excellent second choice, but where it is an explosive percussion masterpiece, Arrival is intimate and... Well loving. I also met Amy Adams at an airport a year later and she called my first daughter beautiful, so there's that.

Great series and I agree, I loved fury road to pieces, but Arrival still haunts me daily.

Magnificent. My final grouping would have been very similar, though I would have had difficulty on my final 2 - Spiderverse vs. Arrival. I think Arrival would have edged it out, but only just. Your entire bracket was a set of masterpieces, and I think any of them are worthy of the top spot, given a person's preferences and how the movie touched them. But your top 8 was a set of very special films, and I tip my cap to you, Mikey.

chyming in early: those quarterfinalists are absolute TITANS.. can't go wrong with any pick from here

Every pick here went the way I hoped. All 8 of the films here are ones I absolutely adore, but just thinking about Arrival gives me chills and makes me start to tear up. Nothing else in the last decade has impacted me the way that film did.

Spiderverse IS the best Spiderman movie ever. You don't have to apologize for that take. (Or any other...it's YOUR channel, after all.) This whole tournament was wonderful. There were some tough matchups in this one, but I was TOTALLY along for the ride. Thank you for thoughtfully considered and expertly crafted reflection on an amazing collection of films.

I am on record stating that Spiderverse is the best superhero film, full stop. Still stand by that claim.

I'm pretty sure I agreed with 100% of the matchup outcomes until literally the semi-finals onward - but even then, those 4 movies are so good that you could say any of them is your favorite and I'd get it I really enjoyed this! Hope we can come back to the bracket format sometime

I figured out the ending of Arrival way early in the film, when they were on the helicopter on the way, with her book.

Mikey, you have a way of putting a movie I've never seen against one I love, telling me why the other one is better, and making me want to watch them all now. What a gift this channel is. Thank you for putting all of yourself into it.

The thing that swings me the other way on the Mad Max vs. Spider-Verse matchup is pretty simple: I've got a five-year-old boy and he went through a period where all he wanted to watch was, and I quote, "The Five Spider-Mans". Twice in a day, on at least one occasion. I've seen Spider-Verse more than a dozen times, as a result, and it is a testament to the brilliance, inventiveness and joy of that creative team that I would, without question, sit down and rewatch it another dozen times RIGHT NOW. There is no other film I could watch that many times without being tired of it on SOME level, but Spider-Verse not only threads that needle, but makes it look effortless.

Mikey and Team, I really enjoyed this project. I want to say that I'm impressed by how you view your content on YT. I think it would be easy to try and take film and art and make broad statements that everyone should agree with. "this movies is about (blank)", or "This is what makes it good to everyone..." But you take these projects and ask, "why is this important to me?" and you just share that with us unapologetically, but vulnerably. Thanks for your work. Its really helped me to appreciate the movie medium more and I'm grateful for your contributions.
