A proper economy system has always been needed in Total War. Despite much of the bad reputation the game has gotten so far, I think it is important to give credit where credit is due, and this is one of these things that deserves credit.
@@RootDen. CA lied to us trying to convince that new features where coming with this game, everything was a lie (u know diferentes kind of terrain and that stuff that was already in the saga) until they show up this video, wich is a surprise They deserve the hate, I hope they don't get much money with this game, so they will listen to the comunnity in the future
@@alvaro701 They already have the money they will get from this game through Epic. They won't much if any from actual sales as I doubt anyone would get this game after it has been given away for free. I will pass as a sub-par TW game is not worth installing spyware on my system.
"Historical total war" -no naval battles, "lack of info" -calling bronze "raw material" It s funny they called this whole thing truth behind the myth, but where is the truth?
Hugo, había puesto traducir página, y tu nombre salía como "abrazador" xDDDD Muy bien que te hagas presente acá y que expliques en un video esto, pues le dará mucha vida al juego.
total war: settlers of catan ok jokes aside the ui and art-style look very very nice and this it is interesting that this will be a big focus of the game.
Credit where credit's due, this feature DOES look good and hearkens back to the resources of Shogun 2, but expanded and further explored. Hopefully CA will start listening to the community and implement this feature in future entries (assuming that it is well implemented in the first place and is well balanced)
They have been listening closely the community past Rome 2. There they were really stubborn for example about family tree, which years later they added and ToB they made huge changes to features community gave much critism about
Thrones of Britannia introduced features that were later used in Three Kingdoms so I think its safe to say if features in Troy work extremely well, they'll carry it into new games.
@Wylvien it would make the game incredibly stale and boring as soon as you become a local power no-one will be able to stop you as they can't make cav or heavy infantry or gunpowder. Leave game design to the professionals
Most impressive thing in the video frankly. Rome 2 and Attila animations just looked like guys swinging each other haphazardly. It was heavily telegraphed and staged, so it didn't look like the hits would land, even if they weren't parried. 3K used an actual martial art that was made for stage performance, so although they didn't look half-arsed, it had the similar issue where it looked fake. Attacks that were meant to be parried or blocked looks like they were only made for that purpose, not in am actual attempt to kill the enemy. Death was also sudden and out of place compared to the showi-ness of the fight. This, however, looks a lot better than both of those. The bow guy overextended his guard and got stabbed, yet it still took time for the life to drain from him. Looks a lot better than the animations of the last few years. Issue is with the duel animations, they look as staged as ever
@@aidanmattys7488 Yeees I agree to all your points. I kinda liked the duel animations in Shogun 2. It didnt look that bad. The duels felt like real samurai duels. I only hated that the Yari Ashigarus dragged out their swords while their longs spears was on their backs though, but after Shogun 2 the animations looked more staged and fake as you said. Warhammer and 3kingdoms Did'nt really have much of animation when soldiers clashed. It looked like a mess. I want CA to make better duel animations with the soldiers and not heroes or generals all the time. Im not sure about Troy though. It didn't really catch my interest, but I may buy it sooner or later anyway because I collect total war games.
@@christiano9743 this is what I am doing i have every total war and dlc yet 3kingdoms I think I have less then 20 hrs keep going back to warhammer 2 because of it being in the warhammer fansty and its a total war game but 3k was just so meh to me and troy is not looking better to me so far so once all the dlc is out for it and its on sale I'm going to buy it plus the epic thing really pissed me off. Make a product and release it to us and let us use it how we want not sell out to force people to have to play on some other platform.
NaughtyAmericaDCUO F yeah the epic BS really pissed me off I was like finally I’ve been waiting for this game just for them to say ohh yeah it’s on Epic not steam but steam will get it next year so I pretty much still have to wait like 2 years more :(
CA should have add Egypt and Hittities as factions behind the veil that indirectly providing aids to both Achaeans and Trojans just like Egypt and Hittities were using these Trojan war heros to fight a proxy war lol
@pokezee king-wolf Ethiopia is easily confused with the current African country, not a wise choice to put it in. But adding some near east factions as trading points at the edge of the campaign map just like shougun 2 could be a great idea
@@Jerimbo well it is lower budget thus cheaper spin off title. so you need to scale your expectations to good solid 300 hours of gameplay. Sagas are a snack titles between major historical titles
This resource system looks good. Too bad I'll have to wait for the Steam release in 2021. (I hold no grudge against CA for their business decision, but I'm sticking with Steam.)
it's a month to Troy launch so if their usual strategy is still valid. This month is Troy month and 3K marketing hype building starts soon after Troy launch (just bug patches etc out of the way first)
@@perkeletto640 I wonder if they are also going to allow you to store the resources you collect, like make storehouses, warehouses, treasuries and granaries? In my opinion it would be more realistic if they don't only make the resources you collect tallied somewhere on your screen and leave them there, but they will also be stored at the place they are collected and you can organize movement of resources to different locations. Like say you have a settlement that has gold you can build a goldmine there and it will collect the gold which will then be stored there, but will also be shown and added in your resources tab. You can organize the gold to be moved around to where it's needed (which will require a lot of micro-ing) or to your capital where you can have it be distributed how you like. But if an enemy manages to take over the settlement with the goldmine, not only will you lose the settlement but whatever amounts of gold and other resources currently in that settlement, and those same resources will also be deducted from your total resources table.
@@ivabarai2770 you are not forced to play the game. They probably not gonna delete the heroes since they spent money on them. So feel free to jump this game.
As much as I hate this game/Epic store I must say that the resources mechanics is such a great addition to total war games and I hope It will be implemented in them in the future.
Then try it out and give them positive feedback about it. Saga titles are proofing grounds for future major titles. ToB best features made their way to 3K as well
@@ImperialEarthEmpire But people like monopoly, because it allows company to raise the prices and shorten its development in order to get greater income, than it would be with free market. It does also mean that there will be lost prosperity based on the players that would buy the game at lower price, but since the price is forced at the whole market they won't buy it, where other customers will pay higher than it would be with free market, but the company balances prices just to make as many income from those who wants to pay more as possible. Therefore Epic Games Store should be destroyed, because Steam will lose their additional income and the players will buy more games and save more money.
Honestly considering how much of a core staple this is for strategy games since decades ago, it is a bit weird that it's taken this long before it got adapted into Total War. I can only hope a similar model will be the future for all TW games because it really should be. The old "gold does everything" approach is super one-dimensional and uninteresting in comparison
People don't like that CA is taking a Euhemerist take on the myth. Basically, euhemerism is an approach to myths that they are accounts of real events, but just a _poetic_ interpretation of those events. Such as _the Trojan Horse wasn't an actual horse, but a ship_. The thing is, the Iliad has had so many euhemerist interpretations that people forget quite how involved the gods are in the myth. It's a myth about rage and the gods punishing mortals for their hubris, while also taking sides between Greeks and Trojans. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euhemerism What if, instead of playing as a general, we played as one of the gods featured in the Iliad? Guiding armies that please us to destroy armies that don't? Basically, people don't like that CA seem embarrassed about adapting mythology and making it more authoritative by injecting nonsense conjecture about how this _could be_ historical. People like and crave historical games from CA, but this is the perfect game to stick to the myth. The myth as it would have been told historically, with an historical context. For example, in reality, the Iliad probably took place in an age before the Greeks that wrote about it, when bronze was probably not invented yet, but the Greeks knew about bronze, so they thought that bronze must have been used in the Iliad. Meanwhile, gods as established in the Hellenic period were radically different from how they were explained during Homer's time. For example, Dionysos being a fun-loving himbo is much more a Hellenic invention. Bacchae-Dionysos was a murder-hobo who would drive people insane and have his maenads rip them limb from limb. Wouldn't units of frenzied maenads be much more interesting additions to Total War: Troy than "what if the Trojan Horse were siege towers?".
The interesting thing about warhammer 3 is that it has been in development for so long that CA could very well have made an entirely new game with updated models, graphics, even a new engine if they felt like it, whilst importing just the mechanics from Mortal Empires (or even re-write that as they know the specific values and mechanics and balance they want and need for the races). On the other hand, this is CA, where they are so complacent that they re-use mechanics and call them "new", so we can get something as extensive as an entirely new experience, or we can just get the same kind of upgrade that warhammer 2 offered warhammer 1. Either way, though experience has me leaning on the latter
@@aidanmattys7488 Warhammer 2 is already excellent at its core and is already a beautiful looking game. We just need reworked siege and a couple cool new factions (Nippon?). Personally I don't care about naval battles but that would be a cool inclusion. The rest of the game needs very little in the way of reworks. Just give us even more juicy content!
@@aidanmattys7488 Its probably taking longer because of all the unique, mechanics, models and animations they're gonna have to make for new factions like the demons. Although it would be nice to see new features such as sea battles and more advanced sieging added as well.
I just dont want them to come and say, "hey guys tw3 is brand new game and because of this and that we are going to have to charge you all over again for all the content you already have" total warhammer 3 is suppost to be the chery of the cake, I belive they can make it. Just dont go full Ego/Greed.
I like this concept. I would have preferred a separation between bronze, copper and tin. That way, it's possible to wage war over one resource and to trade for the other, because you need both to create bronze and create the most elite units. This could be a good way to encourage a balance of strategies.
The problem is that tin is a very rare material, I'm not 100% sure, but I think there is not any realistic tin mine in the campaign map. Yes, you could have add some mines just for a gameplay reason, they decided to give us bronce.
Every total war game l have got bored fast until l use radious mods or SFO. If thiscgame onliny on epic store then means no mods. It will be good for free sure....but long term l will go back to wh2 and the mods...A tw game without mods is very average and to few troop types. Three kingdoms had limited modding and as such l got bored of it and went back to wh2. Epic game store is rubbish compated to steam and if it wants to be competition to steam needs a mod workshop. Worryingly he said when you go halfway over map and move a tiny bit across the screen...doesnt bode well fo size of map for troy ....and the yroop types look samey just like 3k so will get boring fast. WH2 is modded and l have bought most dlc...3k is minor mods so l bought minor dlc...as was bored of it. Leaving modding community behind is a bad longterm move in my oppinion as such sure l will take troy for free but l wouldnt buy it modless.
@Total War The main reason I found interest in Troy was for its resource system and now that its finally been revealed properly I must say it looks pretty good. My issue is that with each step as small as it is that CA takes forward ... it goes back the first chance it gets. So while I am excited to try it out - I fear Warhammer III will not see this feature implemented and if this is the case its a huge shame on CA for failing so hard :(. The connection of resources, trade and diplomacy saw immense development with Three Kingdoms but there is much more work to do ... I hope to see more about it !
You missed the chance to get this historically right. Bronze as we know it is a product of two raw materials. And that was essential in the bronze age, the whole thing collapsed because of the series of events which disrupted the trade of those two raw materials between Egypt, Greece, Middle east and others.
Exactly this. While I really like these changes, I find the idea that you might conquer for one resource and trade for another resource to boost your bronze reserves much more compelling than "take settlement > ??? > bronze profit". For a game that's constantly focused on explaining away myth as historical, this seems like a strange oversight.
Actualy wasn't only for copper and thin but a whole of unfortunate events leads the collapse. Femmine earthquake invasion of sea people, invasion from little nations with iron etcetera
I mean this game looks good considering it will be free for 24hrs to keep however it is slightly worrying when they cant balance theyre audio properly on a youtube video....
I like the simplicity of the single currency in Total War: Warhammer 2, but will be interesting to test this system. I also like the idea of the resources depleting, like gold, will be interesting to see how it plays out.
That's fair. I've always felt that we needed something more to do in-between wars. The extremely simplistic system of previous TW games often meant that trading was a no brained by just clicking a button and thus getting X income. I think this will be pretty neat.
Been playing TW since Shogun. Was not going to bother with this one but this resource system seems interesting and refreshing. Might actually consider this now.
I had pretty much no interest to try this out, even free. This has changed my mind though, I'll give it a try, hopefully something good will come from this that'll flow back into the "main" games (and warhammer!). Actually marking it in my calender now so I don't miss the freebie, if it's good I'll get some DLCs later
Here's an idea. Include the Maenads from the Bacchae. The Maenads were mobs crazed with the spirit of Dionysos, capable of ripping people and wild animals limb from limb. I generally don't like the Euhemerist take on the Iliad myth. If anything, I'd want to see generals replaced with the pre-Hellenic versions of the Greek gods and to see ancient stories told that are accurate to the myths. Even if that means different versions of the same myth. For example, rather than simply the myth of the Medusa as a gorgon with snake hair, while not also the myth of the Medusa as a centaur-gorgon? (We have evidence that in the 7th century BC, Medusa was seen as a more tragic figure and that this was sometimes represented by making her part woman, part filly, fillies being symbols of female youth). Sure, Perseus went to kill Medusa by himself, but I have no problem reinterpreting him as a hero unit out to slay a monstrous hero unit elsewhere. There's so much potential for Total War: Troy to tell the real myths, not the hot euhemerist takes that were old 20 years ago. Sticking with how people in Homer's time thought about the myths rather than how we think about them today. TLDR: Don't be embarassed about the myth. If anything, lean into the myth. Tell all ancient greek stories as they had been told originally, gods and monsters included. The chronology of greek myth was already questionable, so I have no problem whatsoever with the Trojan War being somehow concurrent with the labors of Hercules, even though the Odyssey explicitly states Hercules was dead by the time Odysseus goes to the underworld. Heck, make the underworld a map that can be conquered. I seriously don't care about taking some liberties with the myths, provided people are introduced to the spirit of the myths as they had been told in their own time, rather than through this grimy euhemerist lens.
Really like it. One thing I would change thou is depleting resources, as it does not make sense in such short period of time. Exeption can be made to wood and food, where you can raid enemy land and burn it. But lets see how it is in practice. Cant wait.
Honestly, the whole game looks great; the saturated color palette, the beautiful aesthetics, the soothing music. It feels similar to Civ6 and Age of Mythology, and I'm all for it! 😍 I've been a "Warhammer only" fan for quite a while now, and I've repeatedly been shitting on TROY for being a quick cash grab game, but this video alone has changed my view. I'm looking forward to TROY now! 😁
This is actually a good idea, please don't abandon it should TW: Troy flop. It is VITALLY NEEDED that agriculture do something other than simply increase growth/replenishment or just give a paltry sum of money given how important agriculture was in nearly every historical and fictional context imaginable.
I quite like the aesthetic, the unexplored areas looking like Greek pottery etc. it’s nice. I’m not 100 percent sold yet though. TOB wasn’t my jam, I’ve been a huge fan since Rome 2 and bought and played them all, so I suppose I’ll add this to my collection. I just hope it’s ok
Well... How do I start. This is a good looking game with a outstanding resource mechanic. The lack of naval combat is incredible disappointing. The uniquely Greek and Aegean Sea specific Bireme would be an amazing addition to this game especially since everywhere in between Greece and Troy is water. Then Epic game store, the profit margin has been achieved as well as a experiment for future CA games. NetEase will slowly creep in there influence just like every other situation and company that partners with them. I truly hope the end of CA is not on the horizon.
I like how CA is using these Saga titles to really expand different gameplay mechanics, it was recruitment and mustering/reworked diplomacy in ToB and now this multi-resource management system in Troy, still disappointed by the amount of people who are refusing to even give this game a chance just because of the Epic Store deal
What a missed chance to do Mythology: Total War instead, hope you will make game like that in the future. For almost everyone, bronze age-ish time is most favourite era (Rome 1), in how different and colourful that era is, adding some minotaur, centaur (not just dudes on horses), hydras, would badasss
I appreciate all your work and new ideas :) Keep up the good work people. I love these saga titles and what they bring, i just hope you'll give us more content even after the release ! Cheers
Now make a version of Warhammer with similar system ('cos right now only Skaven, Wood Elfs and Dorfs got that). 'Cos it sounds pretty interesting, but I have zero interest in Troy's setting.
Well, I don't know about the AI or battles or dynamics and stuff but the campaign map is very beautiful the most beautiful campaign map I ever saw IMO. But the game will go to Epic so no moding and they give it for free for the first 24 hours so I have a bad feeling a bad feeling about the game that except the visuals will maybe suck. I hope for the best of the game you never know it might be better than thrones of Britannia we will see.
Couldn’t unit cards be modified? I mean, they don’t look good at all (at least for me). I would instead go for something like the Settlement occupation one, with black figures like on Greek jar!
This new economy system actually looks amazing. Something like this was needed in the TW series for a long time. Imagine how great it would be in an Empire 2 TW with its worldwide trade economy, emphasis on shipping and early industrialization.
See, this resource and campaign stuff looks fantastic. So why the hell do the battles, animations (especially running) and the way people hold spears look so bloody abysmal?
I assume gold is also needed to hire mercenaries, who might also require more for their upkeep as it would be ridiculous to pay them with food, stone, wood or even bronze (although realistically some might actually want food and bronze more).
Making a new era, bronze age but not adding the middle eastern empires which was the main conflict at that time :/ people didn't like three kingdoms cus of the chines culture but calling a game at the bronze age (Troy) winning the fans heart
I know a lot of people have a lot of problems with how the game is looking, but personally I really like how they did actually try to make things like the armor and weapons look somewhat historical, if not a little exaggerated. There is something about the ancient time period that is super appealing, and I think the overall design aesthetic delves into this feeling of the unknown and mysticism very well.
Please fix the buggy combat animation in battles. Also return the rome 2 style man to man combat. If you do that and improve the siege this game will be gold. Also the minotaur looks bad. Just replace it with elite units. The single model units are not nice unless it is warhammer.
I like that the SAGA games allow CA to experiment more than what they would be allowed in a regular title. I think a deepening of the economic system is pretty nice and also rather needed.
I am at least hoping that the diplomacy will be similar to three kingdoms? Otherwise, resources seems fun but might lead to more management that some people arent in to
Wait but what if all the gold runs out? All factions can no longer upkeep their troops? Or is it such a big amount that it will run out around turn 400?
warfare and economy is a balance of the two. you need recourse's to make a weapon, food to feed troops, and leather to cloth them so the game creators did a good job.
How is this different from everything costing gold? Food is like paying gold for recruiting troops; wood is like paying gold for buildings; stone is like paying for buildings; bronze is like paying gold for units. That seems unnecessarily complicated without the addition of many meaningful choices. Low on a specific resource? Trade for it or wait. Alright so just like it has always been then.
Maybe lacks a bit of imagination and novelties as ressources meta, but that should work. So why not... Not super hyped by this, but openmind to see for more.
