The warm colors make this film more cozy! I remember being a kid and watching it on VHS and DVD and it always had the warmth to it because it was intended that way. Love it! 🌅🐪

Hard to choose between the two. While the whites look more accurate in UHD, the blu-ray does have a nice warmer hue.

If I may tell you something, UHD disc is absolutely superior. No higher definition but color is MUCH better and MUCH brighter. Blu ray colour is a bit damp but in UHD disc is brilliant and more accurate. I am really happy to have the UHD disc and highly reccomend it cause you cannot see how HDR increase picturr quality in this video. (Great job BTW)

Yea, as many times as I've seen this movie, the color pallet IS that warm tone for me. Seeing this comparison, even if the skin tones are more "natural" in the UHD version, it just doesn't "look" like The Mummy I fell in love with. Then again, maybe actually seeing it on my 4k tv will produce a better color than seeing it on computer here.

It seems very accurate to me that the white actors look "tanned" and not pink, as if they just left home. Since its characters live in Egypt and it is logical to think that people burn with so much exposure to the Sun, regardless of their natural skin tone. And O'Connell wandered through the desert for several days, all the more reason he must look tanned (slightly more tanned and less pink/creamy).

Adam C, all I can say is, see for yourself. This is easily one of the best 4K Blu-ray's you can buy especially at the $10.99 price point it's been hovering around recently. If you favor a bright presentation, this is it. It's arguably too bright in some scenes. If it had Dolby Vision, it might be the best 4K disc money could buy. Nothing really surprises me anymore, but if you actually care about picture quality, you should have this 4K disc, period. The rough, dated transfer on the blu-ray, while certainly better than the prior DVD, is not on the same level as the 4K. And I'm saying this as a true believer in the capability of 1080p Blu-ray which is still "good enough" in a lot of situations. Not every 4K is a huge upgrade, but this most definitely is. That said, the challenge with HDR to SDR is the trade off in brightness vs color. In the case of The Mummy, the HDR is so bright in some scenes that the SDR conversion looks less vibrant in color to compensate for the brightness. The color is still closer to the actual disc, but once you have a display that can handle the HDR10 metadata, the presentation is A LOT brighter, trust me. Also, this is an earlier video and was ultimately about comparing the detail in the 4K restoration to the old blu-ray transfer and not color/contrast. As I said though, see for yourself.

See, if The Mummy was a NON fantasy-like movie, I'd actually care about things looking "natural" and realistic. But it isn't a non fantasy-like movie. The movie itself doesn't even take itself THAT seriously, although I don't personally think that's a bad thing. Even if they DID do really well with upscaling with the details and all that, the coloring just looks too dull and boring. The movie is supposed to be FUN and full of adventure, but the coloring makes it look anything BUT that. Natural doesn't always have to mean dark and gritty, not like this, and again, why does things looking "natural" even matter with a movie about MUMMIES? And for the record, I have a good TV and computer screen, ones with HDR capabilities, and the colors still look bad. I love the new level of detail, but just can't get past the coloring.

Such videos are a comparison between the filters that were applied by the creators of the Blu Ray to scale down the film to 8bit in a lower dynamic range and the filters that the video creator used to scale down the 10bit HDR from the 4K to 8bit and a lower dynamic range. It tells you nothing(!) about the way the 4K will look on a HDR display, nothing.
@forgottentomatoes7301
@forgottentomatoes7301 2 года назад
You are confusing HDR with overall picture quality. Resolution, grain, edge enhancement, noise reduction, and highlight clipping can all be compared without viewing in HDR. This is why a recent release like the UHD for Pirates of the Caribbean got negative feedback. There was more wrong with that movie than just bad HDR. This is also why some enthusiasts are perfectly fine with a remastered Blu-ray instead of the 4K HDR version. Also, your TV is going to tone-map the HDR (you call it filter) anyway. There are a lot of people happily watching HDR content on a lower end Samsung, Sony, etc, that might not look that much different from SDR, outside of the wider color gamut. Even then most lower end TV's don't cover all of DCI-P3. And even with higher end TV's that can reach over 1000 nits, there's no guarantee that they display HDR10 as the creator intended.
