Omid Djalili (the prison boss who first gets eaten by a scarab beatle) told a funny story about the impact this movie had on his career as he's mainly a stand up comic in Britain. After The Mummy he was filming in Morocco I think with Robert Redford and Brad Pitt and when they wrapped a scene they all walked through a local market and The Mummy was playing on Moroccan TV at the time so everyone in the market ignored Robert Redford and Brad Pitt and were shouting "Hey look! It's the guy from The Mummy! and were clamouring for his autograph while probably 2 of the most recognisable actors in the world just walked away 😂
That "wrong side of the river" gag is unusually highbrow and esoteric for a movie like this, so to explain: the Nile is the largest river in the world, and there are NO bridges across it. At that point, the Americans' only option is to find a ferry to take them across, taking them far out of their way, and costing a ton thanks to all those horses. It's actually quite impressive they mange to arrive at the same time as the heroes.
Thing about camels, they're not necessarily faster, but they do tend to travel better in sand and deserts than horses do. So while a horse can sprint faster, camels are better at conserving stamina.
This movie has such a great blend of comedy, action and horror. As someone that was obsessed with Indiana Jones, this made 90s kid me so so happy when it came out🤣
I know Indiana Jones is probably a technically better film, but I just enjoy this and the sequel so much more, partly from the chemistry between Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, and I think the slightly more slapstick humour just works a bit better with this story for me
The timing of discovering this film, being in the start of high school and having a fascination with ancient Egyptian mythology… This, Indiana Jones.. But of course STARGATE!!!
Indiana Jones uses Saturday morning serials as an inspiration while The Mummy uses them as a model. The difference is simultaneously obvious and nuanced but I don't care... they're both fun as fuck.
This movie knows it's pure popcorn fun and revels in it, like a live action DuckTales. I do love that Evelyn is a capable damsel, as though she isn't a fighter her other skills make her the most useful member of the party. Other favorite bits are Beni trying to pray to every major religion for help, Brendan Fraser saying "Look what I got" and holding up a pissed cat, and Winston dying with a smile on his face because he got to die like his comrades in the great war.
Evie is such an underrated heroine! She's the one who drives the story forward every step of the way (both waking the mummy and figuring out how to destroy it) while Rick self-admittedly is along just to help her out (which is a rare thing to see in a hero as well). Even her relationship with Jonathan is so sweet and respectful. And I love how they allowed her to be an effective heroine without turning her into Action Woman. It's both uplifting and sad that this movie still feels so refreshing after 20 years.
Stephen Sommers was very conscious while making the film that he would need to maintain a very tricky balance between the funny and scary stuff to prevent either from overwhelming the other. How much he succeeded is certainly debatable, but he did put a real effort in. Most notably, if it seems odd that Imhotep mistakes Evy for Anck-su-namun, that's because it's the remnant of a running gag where taking Burns' eyes causes him to also have poor vision, which Sommers ended up deciding would be too much comedy for the character.
It's based on the 1933 film "The Mummy" starring Boris Karloff, which is a film I recommend highly. It's part of the classic Universal Studios Monsters series of the 30's and 40's, including "Dracula" and "Frankenstein".
The mummy is a perfect example of what the adventure genre can and should be, with it being very well balanced...and with a female lead arugably smarter then everyone else and characters that would often being deemed as useless side characters (Ardeth/Jonathan) that are equally involved and important. And it doesn't take itself overly serious, which is so necessary for the genre and balance of the film. Honestly, I could write a whole essay on how strong this film truly is. I added an adventure unit for my film class simply so I can force high schoolers to watch this movie (and if I have to watch the movie every time I teach it, I just pick something I want to watch myself).
Bedazzled is a remake that lost a lot in translation - the original Peter Cook and Dudley Moore movie was much better because the Devil in it is a total scumbag, whereas Liz Hurley is just a bit of a vamp
The treasure in the camel’s pack(s?) at the end was the stuff “Benny” looted from the site. He greedily went back in to gather more after the first load, but…we all know how that turned out
"he looks like Tarzan" ..funny you should say that! Brandon Frasier starred in a comedy movie based off of a kid's cartoon series called George Of The Jungle. he also did another movie based off of a kid's cartoon called Dudley Do-Right. both are kid funny movies that are worth watching
This movie is part of quite a history that spans almost the length of movie making itself. Long before the likes of the Marvel movies these days, the concept of a cinematic universe was first pioneered by Universal Studios in the '30s and '40s, with adaptations of several classic horror novels like Dracula, Frankenstein, and the Phantom of the Opera, plus some original monster stories like The Wolf Man, The Creature from the Black Lagoon, and their first attempt at such, The Mummy in 1932, played by Boris Karloff. Eventually they started having these characters do crossovers with each other, which unfortunately quickly saw a quality nosedive as became clear the reason for the crossovers was that they were just plain out of ideas. Next, there came Hammer Studios, who became especially well known for their remakes of the Universal monsters which features a level of blood and gore beyond anything else seen at the time. Their version of the Mummy first appeared in 1959, played by our old pal Christopher Lee in between his also playing Dracula for the studio. This particular film spent over a decade in development hell, with various production teams coming and going and none able to get it off the ground until Stephen Sommers came along with his idea to combine the classic Mummy story with an Indiana Jones-style old timey pulp adventure hero, and it was a massive success, enough to get a slightly inferior but still quite enjoyable sequel which featured The Rock in his first film role. Unfortunately, the franchise was then killed again by the third film in the series, Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, whose script was so bad that Rachel Weisz refused to come back and was awkwardly replaced by Maria Bello, despite the chemistry between her and Fraser being one of the biggest draws of the first two films. The most recent chapter gets even worse, as after the smash success of the MCU, Universal Studios got the idea that they should resurrect all the classic monster films, building off their status as the OG cinematic universe, in what they eventually named the Dark Universe. And that could have been a great idea. Unfortunately, their first attempt at starting it off with a film called Dracula Unchained was hated by everyone and flopped hard, so they tried to start over with another Mummy film in 2017 starring Tom Cruise. And that film also turned out horrible, causing them to give up on the idea entirely and leaving the Dark Universe as a cautionary tale of what can happen when you try to build a shared film universe too quickly before anyone is on board with it yet.
Dont agree that later films took a nosedive because there classics like Frankenstein meets the Wolfman House of Frankenstein the black castle and the creature from the black lagoon and the reason they started the crossover wasn't because they ran out of ideas it was because of the real life event WW2 and they wanted to give the people what's known as Escapism which is away to take your mind of the War the best way they thought was give us more monsters for there buck
Here's some trivia for you. The actor who plays Benny is the same actor that was in Steel Magnolias as Annelle's future husband. He lost a large amount of weight to play this part. I didn't even recognize it was him, for years. Also...funny that you mentioned That Brendan looked like Tarzan with his long hair. He played George in George of the Jungle live movie...in which his hair looked almost the same as in the prison scene.
As far as I'm concerned, this is the movie that is, for me, perfect. Cheesy as heck, fun adventure, ridiculousness, witty banter, a romance that just plain feels warm and fuzzy that's not just boy meet girl. Boy save girl. Over. And over. And over, ad infinitum.
The actor who plays Bennie was Sammy from Steel Magnolias Also, Brendan did almost die during the hanging scene, the rope was shorter than they thought and it really was choking him.
SO MUCH BETTER THAN THE TOM CRUISE 2017 REBOOT, WHICH IS GOD AWFUL! The best Mummy movie ever! Wes Craven, John Carpenter, John Landis, Mick Garris, Clive Barker, Tobe Hooper, and George Romero were considered for the job of making the movie before Stephen Sommers was chosen after his last film, DEEP RISING bombed at the box office. Sommers and Brendan Fraser said that it's not only inspired by the original 1932 Mummy, but called it "Indiana Jones Meets Jason And The Argonauts or Clash Of The Titans meets The Ten Commandments." Kurt Russell, Sylvester Stallone, Matthew McConaughey, Brad Pitt, Ben Affleck Tom Cruise, and Matt Damon were considered for the role of the hero. It was a box office success making $420 million dollars against a $75 million dollar budget.
After all the times I've watched this movie (I actually saw it in the theatre), and I only recently realized that the Mummy mistakes Evie for his lost love because the eyes he took were from a guy that BADLY NEEDED GLASSES! The movie makes a point of showing him fumbling around looking for his glasses! LOL
Kevin J. O'Connor in Steel Magnolias has already been mentioned, and another returning actor you didn't seem to catch is Jonathan Hyde as the American team's Egyptologist, who played both Alan's father and Van Pelt in Jumanji. He was pretty big in the '90s for these kinds of comically stuffy, snooty characters.
@@cindyknudson2715 Yes, as J. Bruce Ismay, the guy notorious for pushing the ship to faster speed and then jumping into a lifeboat against the women and children order.
@Ryan Lohner which in turn was quite fictional in the movies as he was one of the ones who was helping people get into the lifeboats, so much so that the crew stopped him as he was getting in the way. Plus the women and children first was misinterpreted by Lightoller as Women and Children Only. If you went with Murdoch, he took it as Women and Children first, then men if there was space and no women and children.
Also, before I get into this. I just wanna say, I haven’t watched this movie in over 15 years, and I still remember that Egyptian queens name, Anuk Soon Amoon! It’s like permanently burned into my brain!
It's actually proof of how memorable this movie is considering her name gets mentioned about twice while in some other movies and shows you can't even recall the main character's names 😂
Pinched a nerve in my neck yesterday, and just left a very painful Chiropractor appointment, thanks for bringing some light and joy into my day! Grew up adoring this movie! Super excited for your reaction to it! 😊💛
@@OGBReacts a neck is barrable compared to stiff shoulders, talking from both pain and experience, also the sequel to this is very much worth it though i have to warn you it's a guilty pleasure.
Kudos on the Fraser pronunciation! Anyone else remember the 90s(?) commercial where he says “it’s fray-zer, rhymes with razor” (or something like that)?
Rachel Weisz isn't the only Marvel actor in the film. I don't know if you watched Agents of SHIELD, but John Hannah (Jonathan) played the mad scientist Dr. Holden Radcliffe in the third and fourth seasons.
Brendan Fraser is a gem of a hottie... Done wrong by Hollywood and a spiteful ex wife. Love the man, adore these movies but the 2017 remake is stomach churning-ly bad. The sequel is definitely worth watching 💞
This remains one of my favorite movies, it’s just so fun. And being a horror nerd growing up it was one of the few movies I could watch with friends and not get in trouble because it didn’t give anyone nightmares!
For a humorous detailing of camel riding, here is Peter O'Toole, in old age, giving a very funny rundown on the filming of the epic "Lawrence of Arabia", which was done in the desert, and which featured an extended race of horses and camels to the city of Aqaba. The part about the movie itself starts at about 20:30, and the camel description at about 21:40 - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DMl_npzvsZU.html I just love Evie's priorities, how she can take the time in the middle of a crisis for a little gloat, and to correct Beni's translation. Evie is fun. Winston was played by the delightful Bernard Fox, who, to people my age, was immortalized as Dr. Bombay in the tv show "Bewitched". The animated mummy warriors are, I believe, a tribute to the masterpiece of stop motion animation by Ray Harryhausen in "Jason and the Argonauts", where he animated a small army of warrior skeletons. In stop motion.
My (now deceased) wife, Debbie, and I viewed this one upon its original theatrical release, and since I currently own the DVD trilogy along w/ the Tom Cruise version and all of the 1930s through '50s franchise issues, this probably bewrays my strong interest in the series. Incidentally, my spouse worked for a time @ a CPA firm in which Brendan Fraser was a client and she acquired his autograph, so that's one of my inherited (and somewhat prized) possessions of hers.
Ooh yay I'm glad you did this one! I love this movie! I had to laugh when you said he looked like Tarzan because he was actually George of the Jungle lol excellent reaction to the movie as usual!
5:25 “looks like tarzan” Ok, seriously…you MUST add “George of the jungle” to your lineup…as in that he plays a comedy spoof of tarzan…the films were made exceptionally close together, so chances are he still had his hair long for this set of scenes, then cut his hair for the rest of the movies filming…
Sam : I hope that took one take Yessss exactly what i thought in this scene as well imagine having to place all these books and racks back a damn nightmare lol
Loving that every other minute there was you either saying goodbye to some creep getting a messy end or you doing some version of 'Eeewwwwwwww!' to a messy end. Apropos to nothing, can I suggest a future reaction to "Phantom of the Paradise"? Funny, gory, great music, social commentary, but also a blend of 3 different iconic/classic literary sources (spoilers).
Fun fact: the nightgown worn in the film was unknowingly see-through and after being noticed, it was digitally altered to be a solid white dress to secure a PG-13 rating.
19:25 I like him he underrated comedic timing actor his witty sarcasm lines have great delivery...his greatest movie in my opinion is Deep Rising you need to see that very just fun movie and if you want to see him in horror movie and his range in acting check him in Lord of illusions Both good rolls for this unknown actor
Another one that I was surprised that I liked. I totally pigeonholed Brendan Frasier after Encino Man and George Of The Jungle so I didn’t have high hopes for this. He was stellar in School Ties and Blast From The Past. School Ties is amazing, Dead Poets Society deep.
I love this movie. It's just fun. Lots of action, adventure, comedy. You should watch the sequel 'The Mummy Returns'. They're both great. I saw the third one once and for the life of me I can't remember any of it. That's not a good thing to say about a movie. When the Tom Cruise remake started to air on TV I tried to watch it. But after 5 minutes I wanted to change the channel. Not a good sign.
Kelsey Grammer: "No, the Frasier in this movie is not me. It's not that kind of movie. It's not a movie with people calling in to my show on the radio to complain about their mummy."
14:00 Fun fact, the Mummy does speak Hebrew there, but mistakenly turns to Benny in the feminine form: "Ani ukhal lehishtamesh BAKH/I may have use for you" (BAKH is you in female form, while BEKHA is male form). The rest of the Hebrew is kinda okay, yet Benny speaks gibberish there... This bit has provided many laughs back then in Israel 1999.
I remember.. i've seen this in theatre back in 1999, it was so much fun, like a Indiana Jones movie, but definitley more funnier, because they know, this is kinda stupid and they have just fun with it. Sometimes a good adventure is all you need.
18:56 _"Quicksand!"_ 🤔 In the middle of the _desert?_ You understand that quicksand pits usually form along the banks of _rivers,_ right? They depend on an environment with _water._ Thus, they're a lot more likely to form along the banks of rivers in tropical _forests_ than in deserts. Especially deserts _this_ dry.
HA! funny you say that when you look at Brendan Fraser with long hair, as he previously played in George of the Jungle, which as you may or may not know is/was a parody of Tarzan.
Am I the only one who was more annoyed with O'Connell's ''friend'', Bennie, than with Imhotep?? Imhotep's actions were totally justified, and he was doing a great job as far as technical aspects are concerned. The other little weasel, on the other hand, only got off lucky cause he lied and bullcrapped his way out of being killed on the spot. 😂😂
So here’s a little something that always blows my mind. The actor who plays Benny (Kevin J OConner) played Sammy, Anel’s boyfriend, in Steel Magnolias.
Do you remember the actor who played Robin Williams dad / the hunter in Jumanji? He also here playing the doctor. I enjoyed your reaction as usual, especially all the side eyes and facial expressions 😁🙂
Some have said that parts of the movie are utterly ridiculous. They are firing 8 or 9 shots from a 6-shooter without reloading. I agree with others that also say that this is ridiculous. You can get 12 shots with no problem from a 6-shooter before you need to reload. Watch the sequel. It's one of the few movies where you can understand why a villain wants to kill a kid. You don't have to condone it, I don't, but I can understand his motive.
This was my best friend’s favorite movie growing up and I remember it being a lot more scary than this. I also remember thinking that Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz looked kind of funny and not I can’t get over how attractive they are. They say your taste buds change every seven years! Lol.
Another great one! The sequel is good as well and is worth the watch. Imo it’s a necessary viewing to complete the story 😍😉 Maybe could you check out “Jack” with Robin Williams?
Hi, Sam! 😁 this is a classic. A movie I can watch at least once a year. Brandon Fraser is the man. Love the second one too. 😍😍😍😍😍 But the ones after that can go down a black hole. 😂
7:50 aaawwwwwwwwwwww…you skipped what many consider to be the best joke “O’Connell…it looks to me like I’ve got all the horses! 😂” “Hey Benny, looks to me like your on THE WRONG SIDE OF THE RIVER!🤣”
I watched your reaction yesterday but i was too tired to write a comment. But I want to support your work on this channel and that’s why I have come back to write a comment. I love this movie so much. It is one of my favorite movies from my teen years. It is funny and action packed and scary. The perfect mix in my opinion. I think the effects hold up (yes they are not as sharp but the animation of the mummy is still fantastic in my opinion.) As always, I enjoyed your reaction, thanks for sharing your reaction with us.
If you've never watched either of these movies, PLEASE consider reacting to Flight of the Navigator from 1986 and/or The Last Starfighter from 1984. You will not be disappointed!
I read somewhere that the library scene at the beginning was done in one shot! I really hope you watch The Mummy Returns 😊 the 3rd one and the reboot I wouldn't waste the time on haha. Thank you for your reaction! Loved it ❤
Hehe. And that's why I am shit scared of any large beetles to this day. Watched this move when I was 4/5 years of age. First M rated movie from memory. My love of Egyptian mythology gave me a now reserved fear of such an iconic symbol to said mythology. Just have to hear any large beetle.. Horny or not proceed to hiss at me and I am vacating from it's radius. No further warning needed! 😱😵💫🤣😂
The humor in this movie is awesome. This movie does have a fail. They know the mummy hates cats yet they don't buy 30 cats or anything? He just wants his girl back. He actually gets her in the sequel.
