The Brandon Frasier movie worked because it was not a comedy or an action movie. It was an *adventure* movie. Sort of like the original Indiana Jones movies.

Movies aren't lacking budget, but they are sure lacking heart. Like how they had when I was growing up in the 90s and hell even before.

subtlety is completely lost on people right now, everything has to be massively overdone.

Universal should have done this Monster/Dark Universe in similar fashion to the tv-show ''Penny Dreadful''.As a drak,gritty,atmospheric,gothic horror-drama,set in Victorian England or maybe after WW I,with more emphasis on characters,*not* as a Michael Bay/Roland Emmerich style CGI-fest.

I will take the 2000s Mummy over this.

Why did they even say they were going to go back to the horror roots? Was a flat out lie and you could tell from the trailers exactly what they were going for. Cheap action Cheap cgi no horror elements at all.

Van Helsing with Jackman was better than this? holy Shit...

Victor Frankenstein was kinda neat! Different take and they didn't switch genre. That's probably one of the best modern "Universal Monster-films".

Nothing quite comes together in this crazy mix of action, jokes, ancient curses and the undead, and even Tom Cruise's star power can't glue the thing together.

In the 2017 film : THE MUMMY, Tom Cruise plays Nick Morton - - a character that is shallow, self-absorbed, self-seeking, unethical, and vain. In other words Tom Cruise plays himself ;-)

Tom Cruise ran away so fast, the entire Dark Universe collapses.

Assembly line movie making with no singular creative vision aimed at the lowest attention span and broadest audience. Fast Food Film.

I really wouldn't mind seeing James re-review the classic monster films alongside Mike with a more in depth approach like this.

James, Guillermo Del Toro is scheduled to direct a Frankenstein movie for Universal. Whenever it happens Doug Jones is going to be the monster. I think it'll be great. Del Toro has immense respect for the originals and we know he knows how to make a good movie.

I hope this bombs. Don't reward them for treating the audience like morons.

Am I the ONLY one that watched the trailer, saw/heard Tom Cruise's terrible over the top scream when he is tossing about in the C-130, and immediately thought "nope"???

The 1999 Branden Fraser mummy is a childhood gem for me! I love the classics but I saw those when I was an adult, I grew up with Fraser yelling at mummies 😀

In theater I thought I was watching Michael Jackson "THRILLER" The mummies were break dancing.

James said it in a nice way. There is a reason to retell stories, it keeps the stories fresh for new generations. Now, sometimes it's done well, sometimes it's done poorly.

1999' s "The Mummy" was a great action/ horror remake. I'll wait the Home-Video to see this one

I'll have to agree with Mike here: Rehashing is not only poison for originality, but it destroys the legacy of the originals and obscures them even more to the average movie-goer.

I knew this was going yo suck when they released the mummy's 2nd trailer. The mummy is supposed to be a horror! Not an action. Even the 1999 mummy got this right.

The Monster Squad and Van Helsing are fantastic and there's no reason we couldn't have more movies like that.

The problem is Money, it kills the soul. Of anything. Music, Movies, People.. Name any thing that is connected to large amounts of money that Doesnt turn sour. When you do your arts/work out of love and respect. You get good results. When you do it for money, you have sold your soul.

Van Helsing was a very underrated movie. If it had been released a few years later if would have done much better. Nearly a perfect Universal Monsters Movie, I honestly wouldn't mind a re-tooled remake of Van Helsing at some point. It could have easily led to a whole cinematic universe.

Honestly haven't cared for any of the Mummy films I've seen including the very original, so I'm already eh on this. I'm just waiting for another creature from the black lagoon.

Let's just be clear: Universal already did this. Granted, the Continuity is a bit iffy at times in the Dracula-Wolfman-Frankenstein Films, but they are all connected.

Why don't they release these films in October? Universal could dominate Halloween month if they made Horror shared universe but they wanted to be summer movies.

I hope they continue this Dark Universe. Just with better movies from now on. I know I'm not the only one who wants a very well done movie with all the Universal monsters together in one big blockbuster movie, so I seriously hope that Holywood get their shit together and make it happen with decently done movies.

February 14, 2019 has just passed. That Bride of Frankenstein movie sure was great!/s It's kinda funny watching reviews of movies like this way later, knowing the goals they had in mind not coming to fruition.

As a castlvania/ghostbusters/monster loving kid... i was happy the monster universe was coming back. Sucks that they pissed it away. Luke Evans as Dracula was cool. Wanted to know what trapped that ancient vampire in the mountain...who he was... Judas? Old Egyptian... Damnnnn!!!!

I wonder what 2020's 'Invisible Man' would've been like if Universal chose to double down on the 'Dark Universe' concept? Would Depp at least make it interesting? Too bad we'll never find out...

Here's how to make a good Universal Monsters movie today. *Step 1:* Hire Guillermo del Toro. *Step 2:* Give him full creative control over the script, filming and final cut. *Step 3:* Make it a one off. Don't force him to shoehorn in references to "Set Up" the cinematic universe. *Step 4:* When it's a success, repeat steps one through four again with another movie.

Holy shit, I just watched Bubba Ho Tep with my buddy yesterday, it is an awesome movie, watch it instead of this piece of caca-dookie!

I really like what James said about how the Universal monsters should be retold to every generation. Something about showing young people what was considered great at one point is heartwarming to me.

The actor who played The Invisible Man in the original had an amazing voice for the role!! Even James admitted it in his review! That guy had a great voice! As much as I love Johnny Deep, I don't think he'll out beat the original actor who was the Invisible Man.

Rip movies when they stared making everything a trilogy.

I know James is not a fan of point-and-click games, but whenever I hear him talk about the Universal monsters I keep thinking he should play Hollywood Monsters. Maybe with a guide at hand to solve the moon logic puzzles, but he would get all the references, like when they say that the Mummy and Frankenstein's monster look alike, which is a reference to Boris Karloff playing both characters. The only problem is that it apparently only came out in Spain and Italy (which is a shame, since it's one of my alltime favourite games in the genere), but I think you can play with English subtitles.

Did James review The Mummy from 1999? I can't find it.
