No offence to Maria Bello, but she really highlights just how big a part of the first movie's appeal Rachel Weiz was.

Props to that stunt woman at 16:19, jumping off a truck, onto pavement, in an evening dress and thigh highs. That looks painful.

And STILL better than the Tom Cruise film...

To reiterate what I said before, on its own this could have been a good B-movie but it has no business calling itself a sequel to the Mummy franchise just because some of the original actors returned. And I freaking love Jet Li & Michelle Yeoh but they deserve better. They should have kept the action in Egypt. That way we would have a proper ending to a pretty solid trilogy. Maybe a threat could have come along more dangerous than Imhotep and the O'Connell family would have no choice but to resurrect him again to help them battle said threat. That would have been interesting.

What I don't get is why Alex is all of a sudden American in this movie, even though he was English in the last movie and he had been brought up in England, unless I missed something in the movie. I dunno, I was just bored shitless by this movie

and this film completely missed the fact that Imhotep wasn't really a purely evil man for the sake of being evil, he was consumed by his love for someone who was forbidden and did terrible things to claim that love, hell im pretty sure conquering the world in the second film was an after thought, the dragon emperor could have easily been a well meaning leader who slowly drowned in power and strength as he desired to protect his people for eternity, becoming a tyrant in the process, you know a somewhat relatable villain

This movie was clearly made to cash in on the Beijing Olympics in 2008

As we all know, long after this stinker hit theaters, Universal decided to reboot the Mummy franchise, which has resulted in the 2017 Mummy film starring Tom Cruise and Russell Crowe. Also, there's an easy parallel between this film and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. The two are pretty similar in some respects, such as the hero handing over the reins to a wayward grown-up son.

Actually the term of "Mummy" can also be used to described dried out corpes that still features some still intact body qualities. So yeah, the title "The Mummy" could still be used although the movie content not as good as the first two films. Sorry for my bad english.

All joking aside, these are some really informative, funny, and very well thought out reviews. I'm glad I dozed off watching Shitcase Cinema and woke up to your Mummy review. I've been watching these ever since.

Man i hated this movie so much, i was a huge The Mummy fan back in the day if there was such a thing as that, and when I watched this movie on theater i had never left the cinema so disappointed and mad, first i hated the fact the Stephen Sommers was not directing it then Evy was changed and then there was no mummy WTF!! I just wanted it to end from the beginning

I actually knew a doctor who lived in my hometown who discovered/studied mummies in Peru. And he would have little showcase of his photos and discussions of them when I was a kid. If the "filmmakers" were actually thinking, it'd been kind of cool to see what they might have done with that route.

Actually Brendan Fraiser has stated he's interested in doing a 4th Mummy Movie. Maybe to restart his movie career who knows. Also you should review the Tom Cruise Mummy film.

Did anyone else notice that the green twin-engined British plane (Beaufighter?) transmogrifies into what looks like a silver P-40 at 27:16? What the hell was that about?

When watching this movie in theatres, which I recall being almost empty on a Tuesday, every time Maria Bello's Evie was bringing up events from the last two films or talking about family, I couldn't help but picture Rachel Weisz every single time, mainly cause Bello was not convincing me that she is Evie. Problem is I don't think recasting would work very well after the previous actor already played the character for two movies. It just wouldn't be convincing afterwards. Only exception is Dumbledore in Harry Potter, but that's mostly cause the second actor played the character longer. I also heard that the filmmakers were advised to change the character after Weisz refused to come back. But the studios were too lazy to do a rewrite. :/

The five spheres might represent the five classical Chinese elements: wood, fire, earth, metal and water.

And for the record chinese dragons doesn't breed fire or have more then 1 head, but what the hell it's Hollywood.

So Jet Li was really King Ghidorah all along? XD And then he turns into one of the things from Where the Wild Things Are... yeah, what the fuck? Yeah, I've seen the movie twice and I have no idea what the hell they were thinking.

I actually don't mind this movie, but it is definitely not a Mummy movie. This could have maybe worked if they made kind of an anthology out of this, which they kind of hinted at with the Peru thing at the end, but never happened. Therefore, this doesn't make sense. I actually didn't realize that the Wall wasn't built yet, so that's a big strike against it. I do believe that it was potentially okay, but without the chemistry that Rachel Weiss and Brendan Fraser had, it can't keep it together. I really like Lin, also. She's kind of cool.

It's called The Mummy as they just wanted to establish that it's a sequel in the same universe.

Those "balls" look like they are some kind of elemental spheres. Although the 5th element has changed from different cultures, many asian cultures believe in 5 elements instead of the western 4.

Not going to make a big deal about the movie as it's super old and I haven't actually seen it. But China should be absolutely devastated by 1946. It's had almost 30 constant years of non-stop civil wars and the Japanese invasion, which was so destructive that the Nationalist Government literally abandoned Nanking and moved to Chengdu, Sichuan, almost as far back as Tibet is.

Call me immature, but the "balls" joke honestly cracked me up for a variety of reasons.

I have fond memories of the first 2 Mummy movies, how the first one gave me nightmares, and the second was so kick ass. I remember hating this movie.

I wouldn't be surprised to discover that the original script had nothing to do with China at all. My guess is that, in order to raise the budget on a film that was undoubtedly going to be garbage, the studio had to pander to Chinese investors and change the script to include Chinese elements like so many other modern films do.

I wonder how during the final battle Rick was not only able to hold his own but overpower the immortal, superpowered and probably better skilled Emperor with just a fist fight. Sure, Rick was able to briefly fight off Imhotep in the second film, but Imhotep lost his immortality and powers at the time. The Emperor still had it all, so WTF?

Couple of errors I want to point out: 1. Keeping the Mongol hordes out was the excuse used to start construction of the wall, but it’s actual purpose was to serve as a prison camp for anyone the emperor hated. 2. Since the Great Wall of China was a used as a prison camp, it was built using slave labor in the form of unpaid prisoners. 3. Laborers who had died during the wall’s construction were often buried in it. This likely included the foundation.

I know I saw this movie in the theater. I know I even had the DVD. I still didn't remember a single part of this movie other than the recasting of Eve.

great wall of china yup built with slaves. I mean he was the first Emperor. And under the Feudal system he replaced once he united china the de-conscripted peasants were effectively slaves. Because what is a peasant to a emperor? a slave called by any name is still a slave regardless of the political system. Also kinda creepy how they just switched his promiscuous mother with the witch. But then again pyramids were wrong in the original movie and the cgi so bad in the second who's not to say this whole Mummy series wasn't just a troll, so....

I love the fact that the filmmakers accidentally admitted they knew nothing about Chinese history or folklore to the point of borderline racism when they stated that the CHINESE Emperor's "Ogre" form is based on the Oni and his "Dragon" form is based on King Ghidorah, creatures from JAPAN. Whoops! 🤣

also to point out you miss out that Rick was retiring from the army cause he was in WW2 and thats how he met "Mad Dog" Maguire cause he was his pilot during the 2nd WW2 like really, this movie takes place 2 - 3 years after ww2

Really, I feel like this movie might've worked if instead of making it part of the Mummy franchise, it was its own thing. As well as that, maybe making the Witch and her daughter the leads of this movie would make it better as well... but who am I kidding. This was just a cash grab of a movie anyways.

This movie was a HUGE disappointment. I’m a fan of the Mummy film series and this movie felt like a completely different movie compared to the first two films. No wonder Rachel Weisz wanted no part in this!

It's funny how this one literally rehashes shot-for-shot scenes from various Indiana jones movies, I had the motivation recently to revist all these films which led me on to watching all the scorpion king movies, maybe I've seen too many SK movies but at one point I thought billy zane should of been nominated for an academy award

Couple of thoughts: 1. The General looks pretty good for a guy who was drawn and quartered by horses. 2. Even if Jet Li's army DOES get past the wall of China, he's still going to have a bitch of a time taking over the world because....you know, it's post WWII. They have bombs and tanks and planes and stuff.

It's sad the Yeti scene is so stupid because I really like that creature design.

You should've mentioned the fact that this piece of crap was directed by that hack Rob Cohen, who directed the first Fast and Furious film and that god-awful crapfest Stealth. They should've rehired Sommers, but i guess he fell from Universal's favor after the disastrous Van Helsing film, which stunted their potential monster franchise.

I don't know, the yeti helped make up for the fake Evie and Alex suddenly being American. As for the Emperors Balls, it's showing that he has control over the five elements. And it's important that we see Rick being healed by the pools' water as it shows the water will heal the Emperor to his full power. Showing is better than telling in films.

This movie sucks, it was aweful

Since The Hobbit Trilogy came out i discovered the beaty of fan edits, so i´m editing a lot of shitty movies that has some details i could enjoy, for example, The Mummy (1999) is on my top 3 of beloved films, and the setting on China was really interesting on my opinion (i also love Tomb Raider 2 [the game]). So i cut a lot of the awkwardness between old marriage not having sex or Eve asking Alex how much "tombs he entered", i found that beneath a lot of crap there can be a silly but enjoyable B-movie that on the 90´s would have gone directly to the VHS market. It could be a decent entertainment of one half hour if you cut some here and some there... Except for the rush ending that sucks and doesn´t close properly any of the plotlines.
