The Murder of Maya St. Germain 

Maya deserved better, like I get brought to tears every time i rewatch pll and get to the scene when Emily finds out that Maya died…

I'll never forgive them for letting Maya's story turn out like that. I didn't like Emily with Paige or Alison. Maya and her were just two perfect puzzle pieces together

Maya’s death in my opinion was the most tragic out of all the PLL deaths she was such a great character and her and Emily were definitely meant to be, as much as I love Emison, Emily & Maya suited each other way more💕

It's important to note HOW they rule out Garrett as Maya's killer -- Spencer points out that Garrett was arrested at her house at midnight, while Maya was on the security video past midnight. So she was definitely killed BEFORE the Masquerade Ball. Also, the episode that ends with Garrett being arrested (season 2 episode 24) takes place over three days (three days and three nights are shown). Emily gets the "who's side are you on?" text at the beginning of the episode, so it was probably still Maya. Also, slight correction, Mona stole Maya's phone, not Lyndon. This is confirmed at the end of season 3 episode 12. One of the A endings also shows A rifling through Maya's bag. The thing about A and Maya is, EVERYONE thought Garrett killed Maya, even Mona (Miss Aria You're A Killer Not Ezra's Wife = MAYA KNEW). Everyone in Rosewood agreed that Maya must have found something that connected Alison to Garrett, and that Garrett killed her because she was on her way to give it to Emily. Nobody except Jenna (who witnessed it and pretended her surgery didn't work to protect herself) and CeCe (who ig was on one of her regular "sneaking out of Radley" trips that night) knew that Lyndon was Maya's real killer. Remember, once Mona found out Garrett was innocent (because the Liars found out), the A-Team started to frame Paige for killing Maya/being A by telling Spencer about her history with Alison, planting the second earring in Paige's bag, and also Maya's phone. This is what led to the amazing scene where Mona complained about her plans going awry (cue Toby reveal).

Maya was killed in between 2x24-2x25, she was dead for like a week before the masquerade ball. Garrett was arrested for Alison's murder I think around an hour or 2 before Maya died, silly that the cops didn't think of that before they charged him for Maya's death. I sometimes wonder if Maya did figure out something big before her murder, like Alison being alive perhaps. Maya deserved better than being killed off, she should have lived to the series finale.

I’m so glad there is a video in this bc Maya’s death had a much larger impact on the show than people realize. From what I have read and learned about in interviews and other behind the scenes information I’ve come across since the show ended, Maya was not initially planned to be killed off in season 2. The actress who played Maya, Bianca Lawson, requested to be released from her contract as a main character on the show between seasons one and two. This caused the writers to change the direction of the show and led to some interesting changes. After Bianca asked to leave the show, Marlene was busy trying to hire Chloe Bridges, the actress who played Sydney Driscoll, to join the show at the start of season three. Marlene had a story for Chloe Bridges that she was excited about, but Chloe Bridges was hired to as a series regular on “The Carrie Diaries”, which aired on the CW. Basically, Marlene and the writers had to make some big changes. It is my opinion that Maya was intended to be on the A team from the very beginning, and she was also supposed to be the childhood friend of Alison’s who was sent to town to spy on the girls. I believe Maya was wearing the blonde wig when Spencer saw her in the pilot and she also worked at Leon’s Cupcakes, which is wear A had Hanna eat the cupcakes and find hundred dollar bills in the bathroom. In a deleted scene from season 2, Emily was with Maya when she got the call that Dr. Sullivan knew the identity of A. Maya had Jason’s number and Emily caught her talking to Jason in season 2 as if they were friends that knew each other, which was true bc Maya met him growing up and saw him at Noel’s traveling parties. I think Ali told her to target Emily bc she was the most loyal and the easiest target. Maya moves in on Emily very quickly after moving to town. I also believe she used Jason’s phone to lure Jenna to the Dilaurentis house before settling it on fire. Maya was supposed to play a larger role, but they had to do something with her character bc the actress wanted to leave, so they killed her off to wrap up her story in season 3A. Maya was killed bc she was gonna tell Emily the truth about Ali and Mona. Sydney’s character was supposed to make her first appearance at the masquerade ball, which is why Lucas showed up as “Jenna’s date”. At the time, no one knew Jenna could see again, so why would Mona need Melissa or the girls to distract Jenna at the ball? It’s because Sydney was pretending to be Jenna and Jenna was supposed to be dressed as the black swan, not Melissa, and was using her ability to see and her looks like to find A or Alison. Lucas is shown talking to a tall brunette in season three, and Aria thinks she might have been the black swan. This was supposed to be Sydney. Sydney was also supposed to be the person Jenna meets in the park at the park at the end of season 2. Bc they couldn’t get Sydney’s actress, they created the character of Shana, who was a combination of Maya and Sydney. Jenna was at music camp in between seasons two and three, Shana played the violin, but this was supposed to be Sydney. Sydney was also supposed to be the swimmer who would get close to Emily like Maya. Shana was a lesbian and got close to Jenna and tried to get close to Emily. Shana and Jenna sound like fraternal twin names and in season 4, Jenna was supposed to die, but they kept her alive and killed Shana in season 5. I believe they kept Jenna bc they finally got Sydney on the show, but if she had been there sooner, she would have had the falling out with Emily and been killed in Jenna’s place by accident at the lake. Shana was created to be part Sydney, and part Maya. Nate’s character replaced the character shown in Wildens cape May photo with the fish. IMbD has the guy in the picture with him listed as Porter St. Germaine. CeCe was created when they couldn’t get Sydney and lost Maya. The Charles story is a direct copy of the plot of the rain man and not planned. Also, Toby was planned to die in season one, but Marlene loved the actor. So they had to rewrite his backstory and make Jenna the villain. That’s why their relationship throughout the show makes no sense. He was also supposed to be on the A team for real and not a spy. If you watch the early seasons knowing this, then his actions make sense.

I feel like pll really didn't handle Maja's bisexuality very well. If they had taken a bit more time to develop this whole storyline there would have been a chance to improve on this aspect too. Like instead of having emily react negatively (which i always felt was more directed at maja dating a guy rather than dating as such) they could have had her understand bisexuality and majas viewpoint a bit better

such a good summary of this confusing sequence of events!! when i first watched the show i was super disappointed that maya was killed because i was coming into it as a fan of the books first- in the book series, those two were allowed to simply break up instead of maya dying. the show set up their relationship to be healthier in my opinion, or at least deeper, when compared to the books, so i was expecting maya to be an important character throughout the show. they could have at least tied her death into the A plot! i've always wondered if A had anything to do with Lyndon being able to track Maya down, but they didn't really do anything with the possibilities :(

Maya discovered Alison was still alive. Also, Maya knew that she and Aria were both "A", and then Aria killed Maya. In the first episode Spenser saw Alison throug the window in Maya's bedroom. When in Radley, Mona said "Miss Aria you are a killer not Ezra's wife".

The fact that mayas artist was pushing 50 yr old & is Beyoncé step sister from like 2015-2023 is super crazy

Hi there I really enjoyed the video. It was very detailed so props for that. I remember watching the episode live and people were very upset about it. Maya was different, someone with an outside perspective. She also helped Emily come to terms with who she was. I was very shocked to find that, that was the route they went down cause I thought Maya could be a reccuring character but I was new to teen shows back then. In fact PLL was the show that I learnt how to become a detective and look for certain clues whilst watching the episodes. Thank you for your deep dives on this show I really enjoy your content.

i love your videos so much!! can you please do a similar video like this but on the murder of mona. there’s so many questions i have about that plot. mainly the reason for setting up the liars. also was mona working with cece the whole time and then it went south and charlotte double crossed her ? and why was mona so convinced that alison was a before she died. obviously i know the outcome but there’s a lot that doesn’t make sense to me. ive came up with my own theories and conclusions but i would love to hear your thoughts !!

That’s super unloyal for Emily to flirt while Mays was gone miserly because it’s her fault. That’s like your spouse taking your jail time and you cheat. Maya dating someone isn’t as bad because Emily is the one that had her in that place and probably has her wondering if she’s worth the trouble

Maya was one of my favorite PLL characters and was by FAR Emily's best ship. I loved them together, she deserved so much better. I was convinced towards the end that she was actually alive and, even if she had been one of the A team members I think it still would have been phenomenal. So angry about her ending. But tbh I think from day 1 the writers wanted Emison to eventually happen so they would have had to get rid of Maya one way or another (but wow could they hav gone about it better) which also sucks bc Emily and Alison had NO chemistry outside of flashbacks.

Mayas death is so heartbreaking every time i watch that season i loved her character so much. Her death was definitely the most brutal as well i think and just SCARY. The part when emily is going through here website is so sad 😭😭 Justice for Maya

To me the worst thing this show kept on doing wrong were all the fake deaths, so I am kind of glad this was done in this instance. It got ridiculous later on with all the fake deaths and nonsense. This storyline was especially dull because it ended up being a big red herring that went nowhere and Lindon was basically the only suspicious character and a very easy instant guess as Mia's killer. People keep on saying it was part B of season 5 that PLL became stupid, I argue the downhill started at season 3 with this particular plot-line - it was enough of a sign the writers had no idea what they were going on with the show at this point...

I believe Maya's body was in Emily's backyard for 1 to 2 weeks because they say two weeks before her body was found that's when the people renting the house moved out of Emily's house for no one was there to see anything and that's when Emily's mom got home and found her body Rigamortis and Decay would set in... it say it in one of the episodes how long she was in the back yard??
