Kingdom of Heaven is a 2005 epic historical drama film directed and produced by Ridley Scott and written by William Monahan. It features an ensemble cast comprising Orlando Bloom, Eva Green, Ghassan Massoud, Jeremy Irons, David Thewlis, Brendan Gleeson, Edward Norton, Marton Csokas, Liam Neeson, Michael Sheen, Velibor Topić and Alexander Siddig.
The film is a heavily fictionalised portrayal of the events leading to the Third Crusade, focusing mainly on Balian of Ibelin who fights to defend the Crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem from the Ayyubid Sultan Saladin.

This movie suuuuuucked for how it portrayed the Crusades, and how the only good crusaders are the henpecked, guilt-ridden betas. On the contrary, the Crusades, at least in principle, were a perfectly justified response to almost four HUNDRED years of unprovoked and largely unresponded to muslim aggression. They were at the gates of Constantinople and had crossed Gibraltar into Spain when the first one was called, murdering, raping and enslaving the whole way. When the Ottoman Turks attacked Malta (an incredible story that puts the spartan 300 to shame), the first waves that they sent against the Hospitallers defending the island were legions of Christian slaves that they captured and forced to fight. The Crusades were a defensive war, and were the only way that the fractious Europe could be united under one banner.

Ridley Scott was forced to cut much of this movie by the Studio until it killed the genius of his vision. the Director's Cut was released on Blueray shortly after the Theatrical version tanked. Scott's vision is 190 minuets long and tells a much more complete story. Studio execs didn't think people would sit that long, even after Gladiator's success. My daughter said the Director's cut is now on Amazon Prime. If you've liked the Theatrical Release you will be blown away by Scott's real vision.

When the Crusaders captured Jerusalem they spent days slaughtering the Muslim inhabitants. When Salahuddin recaptured Jerusalem he protected the Christians, enabling them to leave peacefully, which is why he became seen as an example of piety in the Christian world. Muslims may never forget but Christians do.

Except the crusaders had to fight to enter the city, Saladin got it though negotiations. War "etiquette" was always that mercy would be granted to those who surrendered, but if the defenders fought till the end nothing would stop the end of the attackers. The Muslims applied these rules too, and the Mongols also.

The christians had to pay ransom to get out, and quite a few couldn't and were subsequently enslaved. He certainly treated them very fairly for the times, but don't wash away the unsavory parts of the whole thing.

Probably easier to say "creosote bush" than "Dictamnus Albus". Also, the first is a reference North Americans will understand and the second isn't, unless they are familiar with flammable middle eastern bushes. Accuracy will sometimes have to give way to the needs of storytelling.

As a Westerner, I really enjoyed this movie when it was released. Yes, the anti-Christian bias is unwanted. I really appreciated the portrayal of the Muslims, especially Salahuddin. Ghassan Massoud was superb in his depicting the muslim who lives by his faith. But a great Muslim looks even greater when put in front of a great Christian. And there were some. After all, the difference between both religions is thinner than a line. If you like this, you may also enjoy the classic 'The Message' by Moustapha Akkad from 1976.
