Depending on which decade it is, The Blob is a creature of homegrown origins that gains quasi sentience through becoming a larger organism and then begins hunting down humans. However, how it is able to do this and what exact micro organism it is, is never really discussed. But we dont do that here! So in todays episode, We will be discussing what it is, where it comes from, how it got to be capable of achieving what it does now and what it does to the human body when it does begin its digestion process!

Fun fact: The 5 pound silicone used for the Blob in the original movie from the 50's has yet to dry out, and is stored in a lil' 5 pound bucket. Also, the town in which the original movie was filmed in hosts an annual Blob fest, in which one of the events is recreating the iconic scene where a hoard of frighten people run from a packed movie theater that the Blob had invaded. My dad and I like to watch movies on Fridays, and one of those movies was the original Blob. A cheesy B-list movie turned A-list, definitely worth checking out c: Most certainly fascinating to learn about what the creature may realistically be!

I think Paul’s death is a little more horrific to me, just because it looks to painful, but the phone booth is also super terrifying! I don’t know what they used to make the blob in the 80’s but it looks so good with the digesting faces still kind of moving in it, I’m sure CGI is easier in the long run but there’s something so visceral about the effects we see here.

@scionofdorn9101
@scionofdorn9101 Год назад
As long as it didn’t have a way to shut down your internal signaling, you’d probably die of shock fairly fast once it was big and acidic enough. The human shock response (which comes in many delightful flavors depending on how it was induced) just kind of “nopes” us out when sufficient trauma is experienced. Your vascular system tries to slow down blood loss, but your adrenal system is trying to speed up blood flow leading to a massive dip in blood pressure, pretty much flipping your “off” switch.

The part where that poor boy got nabbed by the blob in the sewer before screaming with his hands reaching out for help as he was digested stuck with me for a long time. It was the first time I'd seen a kid die in any media, and I was pretty young myself at the time. For whatever reason, it had never occurred to me before that kids can die too. Granted, I respect the film for being bold enough to go that far but can't imagine what agony being melted alive like that would be. It's a nasty way to go. I don't remember exactly when I first saw the scene of poor little Alex Kintner's death, but I'm fairly certain I saw The Blob's remake first. There's a possibility I could be misremembering, but I'm like 60% sure? The latter affected me more though, which is probably why I mentioned it, largely because we see the damage more clearly with effects detailing the melting skin. I'd never seen that on a child character before. While Alex's fate was equally tragic, I'd argue it was less gruesome in context of what we actually see onscreen. We never see bites or a corpse (The censors obviously wouldn't have allowed it). It was all pretty deliberately clouded by that fountain of his blood in the ocean when the shark takes him down, and we only briefly see him being dragged underwater before he disappears. From one POV, that's scarier because our imaginations fill in the blanks. Nonetheless, The Blob's remake left more of a visual impression on me.

Though in this movie the whole idea is that science can be turned on us, so I suppose it is on brand.

Speaking of cancers and communication breakdown between the cell and mitochondria a process has been adapted from neuroscience, called optogenetics, that can be used to create light sensitive ion channels which, as of 2016, was shown to not only prevent tumor growth but also reverse it over about 24 hours. I find it fascinating that a way has been found to not only basically say "dude, can you not?" to cancerous cells but get said cells to go "Ah, sorry my bad lemme fix that" by flashing blue lights at them. I don't know how far the research has progressed since then (if at all) but it sounds like a massive leap forward that could be applicable to other fields involving rogue cells like certain autoimmune diseases.

Also, I’ve been hearing really conflicting reports about diet drinks, insulin levels, and weight gain. I work in healthcare, I lift regularly, and try to eat relatively well, so this topic is of interest. Several studies I’ve read seem to suggest the opposite of what you said, can you elaborate a bit on what info you know/where you found it? Thanks!
@CasanovaGamez
@CasanovaGamez 2 года назад
What he said is right but only in very strict conditions and also in rats. Sadly it's kinda like the alpha wolf study, which has been debunked and proven wrong, its popularity still out shines the facts. What we know is if you drink eat the same meal consistently for a month with regular soda and then do the same with diet you will lose weight with the diet. You also can't ignore all the problems with processed sugar and HFCS. So even if you assume the diet myth is true, you're still probably better off with artificial sweeteners. Even if you look back 5 years ago the claim was diet soda caused 1 diabetes (another rat study) and 2 cancer (not sure on the origin) but as more studies are done that debunk these the "goal post" moves. That said water is obviously the best choice but we all have our vices.

Keep up the good work, didn’t understand much in terms of the more advanced biological terms but you have a nice soothing voice. My understanding of what you said was that it was a gobbler bacteria that formed a large mass and used enzymes to digest organic matter and used the external gobbler cells like a chain saw to rapidly strip one of surface cells like stripping back bark, which by that point internal enzymes would take over to break down matter. Then it's weakness is one inherit to all creatures, increase the temp to denature the cells, or decrease the temp to prevent optimal use of enzymes, which by that point due to no strong bonds would cause it to fall apart. Also I think the use of space to explain away strange creations is due to a trait best summarised by a line from Marvel zombies resurrection, "Space is a place of infinite variables, a place that can be rationalised but never fully explored"

Actually the reason they wore HAZMAT suits in the first place was likely due to the aspect of simply keeping the blob physically off them and as long as none was on the suit or themselves, so on and so forth, that's why cleaning wasn't deemed required, since it's a very obvious thing to visually identify and remove. The diet soda thing doesn't apply to all diet sweeteners. Check with a blood sugar kit if they raise your blood sugar. The yellow sweetener (sucralose) is as bad as sugar. The pink sweetener (sacharine) has no effect. Sugar alcohols (erythritol, xylitol, etc), can raise your blood sugar but the blue sweetener doesn't. But the blue sweetener (aspartame) breaks down into trace amounts of formaldehyde which gives some people headaches if they absorb it. However for many people it passes through the body without being absorbed or broken down. Monk fruit (orange sweetener) and Stevia (green sweetener) do not affect the blood sugar levels. Both don't taste completely normal but they're effective in coffee and tea and The Taste isn't noticeable in those beverages.
