The Mysterious Case of Sarah Duckett
News of the Times Episode 359 | 1881
March 1874 in the quiet village of Stretton Church. Sarah Duckett arrives back to her home town by train with two, broken and dilapidated boxes. And then she just vanishes.
September 1881 and William Roberts is walking the two miles at night back home from a business meeting. He senses someone following, sees a woman on the path behind him and waits for her to catch up. She does not. There is no sound of footfall - only the rustling of her dress. He moves on then waits again. She comes no closer.
He then dashes away only to see her in front of him as a ghostly apparition. It is Sarah Duckett!
This ghostly tale made the international papers in its time. We take a look at the back story, the event and the post script of the mysterious case of Sarah Duckett in today’s episode of Frightful Fridays.
Hosted by Robin Coles.

I don't believe in ghosts but Roberts' account gave me chills. Poor Sarah. I bet she'd be shocked at all the fuss about her and that she is still being talked about 143 years later. Thank you. Enjoyed.

Good morning American cousin! 🙋‍♂️How kind - thank you! It is Victorian Shocking tales month and we apprecaite that what was shocking back then is not necessariloy shocking now.😉 This tale made international headlines at the time! We have no idea how she managed to run through all her money in such a short time. Sad to end up in a workhouse with everyone thinkng you are dead.😔

As you told of how the story spread, and how the interest grew, I thought about what would happen with such a story today. What perfect material for 'Reality TV' - mysterious disappearance, possible murder, and a whiff of the supernatural. TV producers in the US would have stretched this one out to 10 episodes, padded out with witness recollections, speculation and jump scares, all set to suspenseful music. And instead of being portrayed as a stout woman in her 40s, Sarah would be played by a 25 year-old swimsuit model. Needless to say, your version is vastly superior. Thanks, as always.

😄We all laughed out loud on your comment! Still chuckling...You have a gift for writing!! Yes indeed! This story was huge in its day and "shocking" (so an appropriate launch to "shocking august" which actually would have referred to last month's UK weather😉). You are very probably right! A bit of a let down with the reality - but we think there was some value with that. Was it a Victorian scam ? Did he really see her? Have things changed so much? You will see in the picture form the paper - she was yunger and more attractive - handing her bonnet to him. 🙄 Who knows! You may very well see this same episode in unsolved mysteries with appropriately attractive scantily clad woman in the lead! Thank you - very good!🙌

What a sad tale, the poor lady died and no one was there to claim her so she went to the anatomy school. So sad. But the man who claimed to have seen her ghost, I think he was playing a game! Wonderful story from history. Thank you times team!

Thank you 🙏Yes - that is the question - was it all a tall tale or did it really happen? It was utterly believed at the time! The story went viral in its day - spreading internationally. He was in the cider trade....Bet he sold a lot of cider, as well as making money with his stall! Hmmmm🤔

A fascinating story, and very well told. It still has mysterious elements: why did Sarah not visit her local friends but go wandering off, and did Roberts imagine her ghost or was it a scam?

😁It is a bit anti-climatic, isn't it? It was considered a very "shocking" and intriguing story of its day!! People flooded the poor little village and the story hit the international papers. Instead, a sad end. 😔

Wow!! I was hoping Sarah had secretly fled to somewhere exotic to start a new life, living happily ever after!! The truth was actually sadder than fiction!! I reckon some of the "sightings" of Sarah's apparition were made up!! The village seemed to have become famous because of her disappearance, and the tourists probably brought a bit of extra money and lots of excitement to the place!! No wonder there were ghost stories galore!! Hopefully, the truth brought closure to Sarah's family!! EXCELLENT video, Robin!!👏👍💙💕💞❤

Goooood morning! 🙌Yes - was it all a scam?? If so, he did a great job - the story went around the world and the place was heaving with tourists. He was in the cider business - we are sure that had a boon! Her take is sad we think. That is a lot of money to have burned through in one year!😉

As always I enjoyed your video. Almost to the end l was thinking that it would be like unto the red barn mystery. I should know by now that R.C. and the team are masters at the art of telling a great story. Of course it was a sad ending for her but at least she was happy at leaving the hospital and death came quickly. I have to wonder if there was some truth in the first reporter of the ghost just thought it up to make a bit of money????🤔 l hope you all are doing well and look forward to your next video
