By 1880 The Kid was not only being hunted by Sheriff Pat Garrett and the Texas Panhandle Stock Association but the federal authorities as well. He’d be arrested, sentenced to hang, and then make one of the most daring escapes of the Old West. Little did Billy know how numbered his days truly were. In this final chapter of the Billy the Kid series, we’ll delve into the gritty details of the standoff at White Oaks, the Stinking Springs standoff, the daring escape from the Lincoln jail, the shotgun full of dimes rumor, and more! Sounds like a Man’s dream. Something I’ve got my wife wanting to do is moving out to the country and it’s something we plan on doing this year and I can’t wait. Be able to shoot on my own property. Be able to hunt. Be able to have biscuits and coffee next to a campfire😂👍

@@wildcat8598 you guys will never regret moving to the country. I used to live in downtown Cincinnati , but moved 40 minutes out into the country and I love it. Hunting , fishing , boating , camping and camp fired , animals to raise if you prefer , get ya a good ole dog to pal with , bonfires with friends , shoot some guns , and just enjoy the peace and quiet of nature. It’s a lot less stressful raising kids and having to worry about them in the city life. All around it’s a lot better and a healthier life as well. Hope y’all enjoy

I’ve been infatuated with Billy the kid since I was 8 years old… I’ve been to NM and have seen all the sites and read every book I could find… this is hands down the best series I’ve ever seen on the subject

Enjoyed this series (especially as a history fan but not one primarily into the Wild West) and the fact that you're much more aware of the amount of romanticism added into many stories and characters from the past. I love a good story and sometimes separating fact from fiction is nearly impossible but I think a lot of channels don't even try. Very well done!

I come by first name honestly, the "family" name was won by my grandfather in a card game is what my dad told me (but both are/were heavy drinkers and not adverse to telling tall tales so....ya know...just as likely he was running from the law and changed his name to something that sounded "honest").

It was refreshing to learn Mr. Emilio pretty much nailed the personality of ole Hank the Sneaky Snake in his movie(s) portrayal. Thinking maybe I'll chose to believe the "gun hidden in the outhouse" version of the story simply because it's such a good one. Excellent series, thanks.

Yes dimes at that range from a 12ga barrel would be fluttering pretty good by then. I dont think they would be lethal but it really depends on how they were loaded. With the proper wad they could absolutely be lethal but that would be quite the custom load. Something that had been practiced. For example ive seen a load of thumbtacks barely piercing cardboard at 15yrds. Same person same gun some rounds later, the refined thumbtack load making a good mess of a watermelon at 15. Basically if they stay close together its better.

I've been binging your videos for a couple of days now. While your research seems to be pretty thorough, its your delivery that really hooked me. I'm a public historian. I do this stuff professionally, giving tours and lectures, creating videos, etc.... I have almost an identical approach as you. I just can't curse. Crass jokes and self deprecating humor go a long way... most of the time. LOL.

Fun Fact: Johnny Mack Brown was a famous great football player at Alabama. While they were in California to play the Rose bowl, he was approached bc of his good looks, by a movie Agent and the rest is history. Johnny Mack played mostly western B movies.

His body was propped in his coffin in front of beaver smiths saloon from 7am until his funeral march to cemetary at 3:30 pm 200 townspeople saw it ,,there was no skinning out ,, there was no deal. Billy was killed july 14 1881

Hey nobody ever talks about Pete Maxwell's part in this. The Kid had worked for him in the past(?), and seemed to be welcomed at his place and on friendly terms. I know Billy and Paulita were somewhat sweethearts of the time, but I have also read that Pete was NOT HAPPY about any of it, and was more than willing to get Billy out of the picture any he could. Do you have any thoughts about this?

For a long time I wanted the myth to be true.But that was the part of me that also wanted Young Guns to be true too. Now I firmly believe Billy The Kid died in Maxwell's house. However I also believe Pat's story isn't the truth. That doesn't mean I believe there's some conspiracy or crazy shit that went down. I just think Pat had a purpose that night. It's also funny to me how no one brings up the point that the kid was essentially murdered. I know it was a different time and all that and I don't argue the fact the kid had crossed over. But once again, Pat had a purpose. And it was to kill this little shit. His story is that it all happened so fast and he fired his gun, not once but twice, without really knowing what was going on. It might just be this was his way of covering up his plan because he might've been just a little worried about getting out of Fort Sumner that night. Not that there was a threat there necessarily but the man might've been strategizing a little. As stated we're never going to know what happened that night for sure. But damn is it fun to speculate and wonder! That's what I love about this. Josh gives us the opportunity to do so.

After listening to the series 2 things seem to be quite certain about Billy. 1) He was handy with a gun. 2) After hearing how often he couldn't keep his horse under him in just the last segment pretty sure he couldn't ride worth a shit other than one dead ass broke. 😅

Great series Josh. Really enjoyed this series on Billy The Kid. I haven't read Billy the Kid A Short and Violent Life yet but do have Billy The Kid The Endless Ride by Michael Wallis that I really enjoyed. Just curious about something, just your opinion but do you think that things really happened that night like Pat Garrett said that they did? I am in no way a believer of Brushy Bill Roberts but can't help but wonder if Pat Garrett was telling the truth about what happened that night, I have read people's claims that Pat Garrett shot Billy the Kid with a shotgun and one person I had read claimed that Billy The Kid was actually shot and killed in Paulita Maxwell bedroom and was moved to Pete's bedroom because they didn't want the locals to know that he was sleeping with Paulita Maxwell.

I honestly don't know. My opinion is Garrett 100% killed the Kid. Outside of that I don't think there's enough evidence to prove it happened differently than he said. If anything the idea Billy was unarmed and shot completely by ambush is likely but we don't know.

Dimes? Well, I have been around guns all my life but never once shot a load of dimes. The trick seemed to work for Tom Hanks in News of the World--another western well worth watching. Albeit, in Hanks' case, the dimes also added enough "kick" to knock Hanks down. Perhaps real silver coinage of the 19th Century packed more punch than today's pot-metal junk? Or, maybe Hollywood used over-acting to increase the drama assuming audiences too ignorant to see through such silliness? I don't know. But, I would suggest a little subtle background music at 7:35... perhaps Midnight Hour? Yet again, well done, Sir.

I have been told the pistol that killed billy is still in time. And its in ok condition. So yes its most likely still shootable. For the shotgun with dimes. I dont find that in any way logical. Its likely The shotgun was already loaded. So why would Billy reload it with a considerable amount of money at that time. I dont know what shot gun he used. but at this time most were break open cartridge shotguns. that means he would have to cut the cartridge open to pour out the lead. then reload it with dimes. to me that doesn't make sense. it would take a long time. If it was a muzzleloader shotgun. It's possible he might throw some dimes down the barrel but just doesn't make sense. why would you do that. The lead shot or slug would do far more damage than dimes. I don't think dimes would be stable in flight. and being each dime is fairly light. most likely they slow down very quickly. I have a muzzle loading shotgun. I can test out this Theory. And let you know if its even a little bit of a good idea.

This legend likely started with Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid director Sam Peckinpah but the idea is that Olinger already had the shotgun loaded with dimes. If you google Bob Olinger shotgun you can see a photo of it, it's pretty cool looking. A 10 gauge Whitney double barrel

For it to even be enough dimes to make it possible. that'd be several dollars worth of Dimes. That is an extremely expensive way to shoot a shotgun at that time. I personally dont think dimes would even be a good projectile. I have never done it but. I would think it would be Very inaccurate and each dime unstable. Plus it's weight versus its mass. I would think it would slow down very quickly. I will give it a shot next time i go out. I'll let you know what happens

Is it possible that governor lew Wallace deceived the kid?.. Naw government officials don’t engage in treacherous activities. Or do they??? The kid was foolish spending too much time in and fort summer. Rancher maxwell would have out fitted the kid with a fresh mount/pack horse/supplies. The kid could have ridden off/lived another 30 to 40 years.

MythBusters already proved that would be a non-fatal with the stacking of Dimes in the 12 G any real damage most likely not fatal you'd have to be at least 10 15 ft away we tried it on our own three out of three and couldn't get fatal results on a side of pork so I'm going to say my busted😂
