If you are a victim of domestic abuse, please reach out to someone for help. Please call the national domestic abuse hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE. That’s 1-800-799-7233 or go to thehotline.org to chat with someone online. The great thing about this website is that, at any time, hitting the escape key twice will instantly take your browser to a google search page. In the event the abuser is nearby, you can ensure that you don’t get caught trying to get help.
If you are having feelings of harming yourself or someone else or even just need someone to talk to, please contact your local mental health facility, call 911 or call Mental Health America who operate the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK. That’s 1-800-273-8255. They’re available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

As a retired Medic/Fire & Rescue, I'd like to add that those children absolutely could have died in that fire and not been found. Two hours is not necessarily enough time to find one body, much less five. Fire science was garbage back then. And the theory that burning flesh would have been smelled is simply inaccurate. I don't know what happened, but Occam's razor. They probably died in that fire. Thank you for another great video. You're an excellent storyteller.

7:32 so we’re just going to gloss right over that? The dude stole a lifting system from the house right before the fire and even admitted he did it to cut the “power lines”. Why would he just randomly cut the power lines? Sounds like that was their best chance at getting the suspect. Or at least someone that knew more about the fire than what they were saying.
@galacticunicorn6319
@galacticunicorn6319 3 года назад
I thought the same thing! Why the hell is everyone glossing over this as if it isn’t a huge deal? He clearly wasn’t doing anything with the power lines for work if he had to steal the equipment to get up to the lines in the first place.

Apologies and novella warning! Apologies. I agree but I thought he stole the block n tackle and wanted to cut the phone line, presumably to stop a report being made? However he made a mistake and cut the electric line at the top of the pole. So cause n event switched from what i understood. But why not cut the phone line at the house, as somebody did? Why if the electric line was cut there. was there still some power to the house? Why did the thief in effect steal a whopping great ladder n not just escape with the BnT? It would have been very heavy too. The block is a counter weight so is large. It also sounds like he pinched it from a shed a fair distance from the house. It seems one coincidence too many. If the insurance man is the murderer, that bloke up the ladder is a strange complication. If he was an attacker, climbing the ladder to throw the grenade might make sense. His theft would be a kind of alibi. "Yes Sergeant, I was on the property up a ladder just before the fire started but it was because I'm a thief, not a murderer." I edited it out but I remarked in a comment that I wish we'd had just a minute more about the thief, because he's an extra puzzle that seemed to be glossed over. ETA why steal a block n tackle anyway? It's not something a farmer would use often so why not just ask George if you could borrow it? If he said no, *then* you steal it!

What would he have to gain? Terrible coincidence - it happens. I bought a $20K policy in 1983 and totaled my car three weeks later; fortunately, I did not die but the accident had absolutely nothing to do with the purchase of the policy. This was horrific. That poor family suffered forever more. It did, however, cause me to remember an incident involving an insurance salesman that happened when I was a child. The man came to the door & my mother politely told him she wasn’t interested. He kept on & on, & finally asked to just come in & leave some information & “free gifts”, telling her he’d benefit from his company if allowed. She let him in, gave him iced tea, and reiterated she would not be buying anything. He said he understood, laid out the “gifts” - a packet of sewing needles, a small notepad, & a tiny calendar. He then droned on about all the terrible things that could happen to one without insurance, showing awful pictures. Eventually, my mother said she had work to do, would not be buying anything, & he should probably move on to a better prospect. He leapt to his feet, grabbed up all the “gifts”, and yelled obscenities, while headed for the door. He slammed the screen door so hard it loosened the hinges. It was August in New Orleans. His face was so red, I think he would have killed us if he thought he could get away with it.

It seems to me that children were NOT in the house. If they had been, with five children, some would have awakened and been screaming. More is the question, who orchestrated this disappearance of the five children to the extent of burning down the house?

The other stuff I can’t explain, but it’s not always the case with the screaming. Usually it’s the smoke that kills people first if they’re sleeping. Something doesn't make sense. Why did he go by the last name "Sodder" if he was Italian? And secondly, if that insurance salesman liked Mussolini why in the hell did he immigrate to the U.S.?? Do we know his name or his kids' names?

Boy, you don't pay attention uh? Esp when it was mentioned by the narrator... People...especially back in the days with difficult ethic last name sometimes change it (last name)...to fit in, be more Americanized, pronunciations, job hiring etc... *not in this case, but most people who came thru Ellis Island...had their names spelled differently due to difficultly pronouncing that specific name. *p.s. my Indian last name is spelled differently due to that fact. When my Grandfather came over...they agent spelled it how they pronounced it. So that's what's on the paper...thats the last name. This happens all.the.time. And now you know 🙂

I wonder why they haven't done an archeological style dig at the property where the house was? If Mr. Sodder didn't take any of the debris away, and just buried it all with dirt? The remains would still be there. If we can find bone fragments from survivors of plane crashes, or the WTC, surely they'd find something if it's there to find. But my heat ultimately goes out to Mr. & Mrs. Soddard and the surviving children. I know they're no longer alive, but the anguish they must've felt! Having lost my oldest son suddenly when he was nineteen five years ago to Addison's Disease? I know what it's like as a mother whose lost their child. I couldn't even begin to imagine five! The pain is so intense, utterly physical and emotional. She's an incredibly strong woman to have survived for 44 more years. I'm barely hanging on. If there is an afterlife? I truly hope they're all together in each other's embrace, now.

Back then, almost everything was flammable, from bed sheets to wall paper, clothing, and including the wood the house was built with. If the rubber pipe bomb or grenades blew, the house would have been ablaze almost instantly. They didn't have fire repellent like we do now.

A very strange and very sad story posted 2 minutes ago ( a pleasant surprise)! I'm pissed at the fire department- you have a raging fire with trapped children......+ no one shows up!!! I know they are volunteers. If this was a routine occurence I hope the town started paying them so they'd show up. It does seem like this insurance guy was a little too sensitive about Mussolini. He must have disabled the cars + planned this crime out to the finest detail. Maybe he doesn't even like Mussolini- he just says this to scare cops off the case. He COULD have been a real dangerous psycho! One good case might be Israel Keyes- see how the FBI screwed up big time!

Very interesting take on it. He had always been portrayed as grief stricken and proactive but I wonder if that's the authors voice to his actions and his words were a bid for the typical narc victimhood, attention seeking. It would explain his actions to quickly bury the basement site, it could explain the stupid attempt at someone having burying fresh beef organs, why he felt targeted over his outspoken views. He may have not even meant to kill them (though if he did this he likely had meant to), but instead draw attention, sympathy, a sense of importance to benefit his business venture.

I have watched and read many reports on this tragic mystery and this is the absolute first I've heard d of the grenade. I also think it's the first time that it's been mentioned that the five missing children were the same five who stayed up late. So your research, as usual, is impressive. With those two things in mind, I now think your theory is very possibly the truth. They were overtired, or unconscious so couldn't be waked, and died of smoke inhalation. John's attitude is understandable. Real guilt over his attempt to wake his siblings, or not, survivor guilt, and we don't know how often he was made to explain leaving them. Then there were the years of his parents frantic concentration to find the kids, plus the whole town asking him questions, and making him feel judged. When *one* sibling does, especially traumatically, it's usual.for the survivors to feel under valued, so imagine the impact of five deaths. The insurance salesman seems a likely contender for the murderer title, as you suggested.

Sadly, during this era and well into the 50s and 60s, insurance salesmen (yes, they were all men) often showed potential customers horrific photos of burned bodies and houses in order to scare prospects into buying fire/life insurance. "You wouldn't want this to happen to your family, would you"? I'm onboard with the insurance salesman theory. Maybe he didn't mean to cause complete destruction. Maybe just enough that they would reconsider. Sounds like his plan went horribly wrong. How devastating to lose half your family in 1 night.... Another great presentation and interesting story.

The reason George KNEW his kids did NOT die in the house is because they would not BE in the house without having done their chores. Farm life. Srsly. The man loved his kids and spent his life trying to find them. You don't stop looking for remains after a certain period of TIME. You either find remains or you DECIDE remains do not exist. Dismissing how hard it is to destroy remains AFTER acknowledging that an expert said bones would be there does not make sense.
