Then a retweet with almost a million more likes proceed to say no one thinks she's ugly and that shes a dime a dozen. Every reply was all about her being below average and bland, nothing special, too skinny etc. like what? They hate her bc she's pretty but also because they don't find her pretty lol

I'm a firm believer that irrational hate is mimetic in large groups of people. You can actually apply what you stated in your conclusion as to why professional wrestling works so well with fans. The showboating, overconfident, condescending villains of wrestling are written that way because people will naturally despise them as heels. It works every time, none better than Ric Flair whose whole persona is gloating about how much richer and better he is than you.

Funny how everyone's chasing perfection but if someone is perceived to have achieved it they are hated. If the end of this goal is just hate from peers then why does everyone chase it?

Rising above the masses and elevating yourself in anyway will always come at the cost of offsetting other people's insecurities. That is why they turned on Jennifer Lawrence eventually. (no matter how relatable she seemed) That is why people obsess over bringing down celebrities, to feel better about themselves. Like you said, it explains the need for billionaires and celebrities to make themselves look normal especially now that relatability marketing is the in thing. The MET Gala aftermath and the blocking of celebrities on tiktok is proof of that.

It always baffled me the hate for Anne Hathaway back in the 2010s. I loved her since Princess Diaries all the to now. Hating on her cause she's a great actress and a decent person is just so petty. Also, kinda ironic that nowadays Jennifer Lawrence is hated now due to some questionable friends she keeps. 👀

A possible reason is that the media tells us we're "meant to love" certain celebrities (e.g. zendaya) or herald them as the perfect ideal to strive towards; when in reality few of us do and we can sense their career, looks and media hype is artificial. People "hating" can also be the reaction when they feel they are forced to like something without their choice.

I find it funny how people love to bring up Schadenfreude. I'd say the word is mostly used in a more innocent and fun context, not a sinister one, so its always funny to me when non-german speakers run with the definition and use it mostly in these mean and sinister scenarios xD

Sometimes people will hate on otherwise unproblematic female stars for being successful, beautiful, & talented -- I've seen people (IRL and drama channels) talk about JLaw in the same tone they discuss actual creeps/criminals like Dan Schnieder or Weinstein, who have caused real harm to others. i think it is kinda funny that a really nice person that does not have much of an edge to themselves gets so much hate? really shows that you can be the nicest, most kind and beautiful person and STILL people will hate on you.. which also is kinda nice to think about that even if you are at your best, you still will meet people who don't like you, so it does not really matte WHO likes you, as long as YOU like YOURSELF 😊

Yes people don't like her only because they wish she treated herself with less respect. They don't like her because they don't see her putting herself down. They don' t like that she is so confident in herself and don't seem to care what others think of her. It's really just self-loathing because these same people who hate her for this same reason, hate themselves for not being as confident as she is.

Okay, I was one of those people who HATED Anne Hathaway. Yeeeeah, it was true. I still don't find her appealing. It was only about her being rude, arrogant, "theatrical" and FAKE, FAKE like hell. You see, when you look at another person and you feel their energy, their attitude. Anne Hathaway was just not who she pretended to be. That's all. People felt that and she got what she got. I never wrote a bad comment on her profile or sth, i'm not like that. I just clearly remembered that i somehow read her disgusting hypocritical nature, so I was actually surprised that i wasn't alone in that. When that hatred started I though "oh my... people understood that, too".

It's okay to not like some people, everybody carries a different vibration. Not everybody likes you or me, and that's normal. We either vibe with another person or not. I personally don't vibe with Anne, she hasn't done anything wrong or insulted any group I'm a member of, but I can't put my finger on why. I chalk it up to mismatched energies.

In either 2009/2010 there was a readers poll in one of the Big tabloids (People or US magazine) about the most hated celebrities in America and Anne Hathaway was placed HIGHER on the list than Rnb singer, Chris Brown! For context, in case some commenters don’t know, Brown at that time had recently been CONVICTED of domestic violence against his then girlfriend, Rihanna. Just a little reminder of how completely deranged the hatred was for the wonderful Anne back then

I think you just solved my conundrum of why I've messed up irrationally during auditions. I subconsciously picked up on this aspect of human nature, and have tried to make myself smaller, even in places where one might think the expectation is to be bigger. I've noticed that my talents are more comfortable shining in certain environments over others. It's interesting, sometimes humans expect each other to be perfect, and some other times they find that perfection to be offensive.

Ok i wasn't aware there was hate directed towards Anne. As far as i know every comment I've read have been praise. As a kid who watched Princess Diaries back in the day, I thought she was the prettiest girl I've ever seen with the most beautiful face I've ever seen.

My mother taught her back when she was in high school, only had wonderful things to say about her. Sad some people don’t agree.

I literally always loved Anne Hathaway ever since I saw her in Princess Diaries and Ella Enchanted, and when I got older and started using the internet I saw that people hated her and I've always been so confused by it. She always seemed like a lovely person and of course just an incredible actress, and I never saw anyone give an actual reason why she deserved any hate besides "I just don't like her, she seems annoying" and other dumb, vapid reasons. It just seemed like unhappy people being jealous or unhappy with their lives so they just needed someone to dogpile on to make themselves feel better. I'm happy the pendulum is starting to swing back for Anne Hathaway even if it's just a little bit at a time!

I never felt this way about Anne Hathaway, but I find something off-putting about Anya Taylor Joy. There’s something sort of uncanny valley about how perfect she is. I don’t hate her, though. She just makes me a bit uncomfortable.

It’s a similar concept to very popular and aesthetically appealing and conventionally very attractive people talk about how “awkward” they were while growing up. The average person sees that and thinks “yeah, right” with an eye roll and whatever comments they have. I don’t have a problem with Anne or Jennifer. Funny thing is, I haven’t heard similar things about Julia Roberts. She has a giant mouth/smile too, similar features and personality, etc yet she’s been seen as “America’s sweetheart” for decades

I remember being told in high school I was “just too nice” and they said someone can’t be that genuine all the time…I remember snarking back with “ok, I guess I’ll make fun of you more” - this was with a fellow student I considered a childhood friend from growing up with them through elementary and middle school. Eventually when I ran into that same person when visiting their college one party weekend, I joked with them about what they said about me being “too nice” in high school. They embarrassingly laughed and said “yea, idk why I was such a hater to something like that”

I tried to like Anne Hathaway, I really did. However, what doesn't seat well with me has nothing to do with her appearing perfect in and out of camera. It is about her persona on interviews or whenever she interacts with people on camera. She always speaks in a condescending way, like patronizing whoever is speaking to her (in a respectful manner and trying to make her look relatable) which comes as inauthentic and performative. Nothing wrong with being good enough 24/7 (she definitely lacks Jennifer Lawrence early carrier acting chops) but there's certain quality to her speech, voice tone, gaze and body language that gives me entitled and stuck up.

The word hate is a bit much and it kind of reduces the actual meaning of it. As for Anne, I used to love her! But there was a moment in which she went from being interesting in her interviews to coming across as very pretentious and self-righteous in a very preachy way (not just about politics). At the same time, she was all over the news with projects and most of them were not good, so my opinion of her changed a lot during that time. Probably as a result of media saturation, her acting being quite bad (the Jane Austen movie, One Day), and her new preachy attitude. If you look at actors (both male and female) who are beloved and respected, most of them have a healthy sense of humor about them in which they don't take themselves too seriously without faking humility/playing dumb and don't complain or share their opinions about everything. Streep and Moore are good examples. Anne and Jennifer are the opposite examples. When millionaire actors try to teach or tell the audience what's right or not, what to think or not, how sorry we should feel for them because they are just like us, how their acting skills are the new coming of baby Jesus and give weak performances, I'm out.

She was a "too perfect" , super skinny, "regulation hottie" when people like Adele, Meghan Trainor, and Rebel Wilson were hitting their stride, being recognized for talent, as opposed to conforming to conventional Hollywood standards. Perhaps there was an unspoken (and undeserved) backlash from this shift. 5. At an awards show, she corrected the spelling of her name. "Ann with an E" This was giving drunken Reese Witherspoon "Do you know who I am?" but in a more bubbling under-the-surface, subtle way. It rubbed some people the wrong way, including me. Then the press and social media piled on. I didn't "hate" her and still watched movies with her in them, but didn't care for her off-screen life for a good number of years. Compare this to the John Travolta incident at the Oscars during which he introduced Idina Menzel as "Adele Nazeem" and how she handled it - she rolled with the punches. She went on stage and nailed her performance without missing a beat. She never brought up how she was slighted, unless journos asked her directly, and she answered graciously without talking trash about Travolta. In fact, the incident went viral and seemed to boost Idina's career profile. 6. Also, there were other actresses taking over Hollywood at the time, like Jennifer Lawrence who worked hard to push a more "relatable" persona to the public, doing things like falling up stairs while wearing a fancy gown.

I think it’s because if someone is perceived as perfect, then it makes others feel less than or judged and compared. We think no one is perfect but to see someone who displays themselves in this way it just feels off, inauthentic and/or smug whatever. Some ppl just feel uncomfortable with it and turn to dislike the person.

I think one reason some people didn't like her is because she didn't try to hide that she was out to further her career. She didn't pretend to be afraid of or shocked by success. This can make some members of the public feel less in control because the successful woman seems to pick herself instead of being picked by them. Does that make sense?

There are so many comments that seem to miss that it was a very specific point in time when she experienced particular “hate”. Here’s another example: in the early 2010s at the same time Brie Larson was starting to get a lot of roles and was well liked. Now obviously she’s very unliked. That’s the point, the public is fickle and for celebrities it can turn hard on them. ❤
