The team is on Phil's home turf, where 200 years ago some of the cathedral's most beautiful buildings were demolished, including a bell tower and two chapels. Moreover, there is a mystery surrounding leg-bones discovered under one of the chapels. Could they belong to Bishop Beauchamp, who built one of the chapels? Bone specialist Jackie thinks she can solve the mystery. The team is hoping to get an insight into the purpose and function of this magnificent medieval structure, as well as the city that surrounds it. Stewart is more interested in Constable's famous watercolor of the cathedral. Raysan builds a Lego model, and Brigid finds a unique coin. They make some interesting discoveries about the foundations of these various buildings. They are joined by the cathedral archaeologist Tim Tatton-Brown, and historic buildings consultant Richard K. Morris. Historian Elaine Chalus talks to Helen about the charismatic personality of Bishop Beauchamp himself.

Love how they give us little glimpses into the life as an archaeologist, like when they caught Matt in the middle of that huge yawn when Racksha (sp?) was going over the site of the bell tower they were excavating. His little start and guilty grin was hilarious.

This is why I'm fascinated by archaeology, the unraveling of the past lives of people who lived very differently than we do. Great program, love the Time Team! Oh, & as for the comment that these were celibate men amassing huge fortunes, I wouldn't count on all that celibacy. Anyone else find it odd that the Bishop's bestie was buried in the FAMILY chapel? Wouldn't be the first time!

Really don't understand this modern obsession for speculating everyone in the past was homosexual without evidence. You were literally presented nothing that pointed toward that conclusion. Historical figure didn't marry- must have been gay Historical figure never had children- must have been gay Historical figure had any close friends of the same sex- GAAY!! Cause no straight people have ever done any of those things ::eyeroll::

People are asing about why the bell tower was taken down. One person suggests that it was too ugly, but I suspect that it may have been structurally compromised by the vibrations of the almost continual ringing of the bells. I'm sure there was more than one installed over the centuries.

People who moan about how all these massive buildings were a waste, haven’t considered that for decades they employed craftsmen and boosted the local economy. Better than hoarding the coins or breaking the pride of the working poor by giving them money to do nothing.

I quite like what interesting little snippets we get from such digs. What I dislike is how the programme's powers that be insist on everything being blown out of proportion. "We're re-writing the history of this cathedral" [add a series of exclamation points]. "It's a mysterious burial" [awe and wonder]. It's all interesting for sure. But it is also what you'd expect from a dig site like this.

100% cathedrals were built as much for letting lower classes know their place as it is glory to god. The grandeur of the church itself before reformation was designed to keep the peasantry in their places, so to speak. As someone who has studied and practices in this in Eastern Europe, it is easier to see when dealing with serfdom over the feudal focus of Western Europe. Both are prevalent

Yeah, but compare that to today. A laymen didn't pay more than 10% of his wages in tithes and a significant portion of the year off for Holy Days, by law. Nobility was outlawed from raising land rents, regardless of population or inflation. Clergy weren't able to get married or pass on any wealth to children, keeping it all within the Church so they could build those buildings which were open to the poor and the sick. Was it perfect? About as good as today, more or less. About as good as the future, I would say as well. The eternal law of might makes right will be around forever, as it has from the get-go.

You clearly don't work in building or have the slightest clue about the Technologies you're referring to, however there is one huge difference about when they were building these and today that being the medieval forests of Europe the little matchsticks we have today do not compare and I live on the west coast of British Columbia but I know that are beautiful massive softwood doesn't compare either, the wood they used to build this was like Steel

Example 1. When it comes to the actual building of the Cathedral. It was NOT built 800 years ago. Today we can't duplicate that kind of building in material. The biggest strongest cranes today. Can't lift more than half of those stones. Example 2 Even today. We don't find the transfer of craftsmanship. From said building. To the homes and businesses buildings. In the surrounding area. Comparing the technologies of said homes and business buildings. To the technology behind that build. Is vastly different. One's primitive. Other we still can't reproduce.

@trumpershaveblinderson7470 Like all conspiracy theorists you make wild claims but never back up those claims with anything even remotely approaching evidence. So if the building is not 800 years old, then how old is it? Go on, tell me. I'm sure you'll dodge the question with some elaborate word salad.

@@walkaboutwithrob Conspiracy fact. No theory behind anything mentioned in my comment. In your entire comment. You didn't address the problems. The problem with the Official storyline. Which is incredibly flawed. I didn't even get into the actual Technology of that design. Address how? They made this. That burden is on you. Rope's man and animals. Is hogwash. Not with those size of solid stone. Don't do theories. How old is this building? IDK. When it comes to a dating system. There again. IDK of any 💯 accurate dating system. Certainly not C-14 dating. You ask for me to do the impossible. Edit. They even mentioned that they added on to it. But it wasn't recorded. But yet there's a wall that predates the said addition.
