I can vividly remember thinking Mars had "canals" on it until 1976 when the Viking missions landed and took close up pictures of the surface. As a kid, the blurry photographs from Mariner 4 were always "inconclusive" in my childlike mind, LOL.

Schiaparelli never said that he saw "canals," as in artificial waterways which would suggest an origin of manufacture by intelligent beings. That was Percival Lowell's take on his work. Schiaparelli called them "canali" which means "channels" in Italian. This is perfectly apt for any sort of water-carrying structure, including rivers, creeks and other perfectly natural items.

It's called pareidolia. Religion is rife with it, seeing Jesus or a saint in a stain on your refrigerator or wall. I had my own bathroom at work one time, everyone wanted to use it. I took a marker, put legs on it, and no one used the bathroom after that, except, of course, me!

The comments complaining that people are already "littering" Mars are bizarre. What does it matter if there is a small amount of debris when these machines are the only way for us to learn about Mars in depth and for any of us to hope to get a sense of the planets desolation? One day Mars will be ripped apart by the sun itself, so let's allow ourselves a bit of "littering" if it means we can learn something about it before it is gone. Heck, the debris will be buried under the sands eons before there are tourists enjoying the Martian national parks. Stop hating on your own species so much. It is regressive.

Face on Mars. I remember back in the day, seeing a tabloid with the picture of the "face" on the cover. They had actually cut out part of the picture and replaced it with an image of an actual face, in gray, to match the rest of the image ... you could even see the outline of the join of the two images. The headline was something like "Face on Mars warns Earth to stay away!" or something like that. Talk about silly!! That said, I was a bit surprised find Lowell's theories about what Schiaparelli called "canali" attributed to Schiaparelli here. As pointed out by others below.

In the late 80s/early 90s I was attending Santa Monica College. The astronomy course professor arranged a field trip to JPL. That field trip was awesome! The class was allowed to view the mars photos in a room that was chalked full of materials. After the students viewed the material and listened to the presentation, the presenter/specialist concluded by saying, "so as you can see the features are completely natural. The entire class erupted in laughter. I went on to a degree in archaeology. The details of the "face" on mars were never of real interest to me. Instead, it is the structure (geologically and archaeologically speaking) that those details are an assumed component, that are of interest. Thank you for the great videos.

*CORRECTION*: Schiaparelli thought he saw "canali" on Mars. The Italian word "canali" means "channels" in English NOT "canals". Schiaparelli thought he saw channels carved by water, not structures built by people (or creatures). The English speakers reading Schiaparelli's findings back in the day, BLUNDERED the translation leading to misconceptions and bad science that actually continues to some extent today. Even in this video, its claimed that Schiaparelli saw "canals" on Mars. There is utter irony in the advertising at the end of the video.

Occam's razor is important. It's just a picture of a mountain taken at a specific time, is much more likely than it's a perfect image of a human face. He saw what he thought were natural channels, and the American media and academia misinterpreted (perhaps deliberately for sensationalism) the direct translation of 'channel' in Italian, 'canale' to mean 'canal', and the story blew up. I was watching "Why Files" and I remember that NASA/JPL doctored the photos of the face once the public pressured NASA to go back and get closer images. Lan Flemming who was a NASA contractor went over the photo and found a bunch of discrepancies that show it was manipulated from the original. I'm still also fascinated with the D&M pyramid on Mars and would love a video on that as well.

You know considering how easy it was for NASA to share that "face on Mars" image, it's honestly a wonder why people believe they would "hush up" about alien lifeforms or discoveries of extra-terrestrial things. That was as crazy as it could get, something that "appears to be a replica of an ancient civilization". I mean come on.

There was a great add on TV it was for Smash, Potato's in a bag. It had the consistency of milk and tasted like sand. The add had two robots that played characters on Mars who loved the Smash from earth. They should used the add to depict the Mars rover.🤖🥔🤖

Mars has a land area approximately the size of Earth, As Earth is two thirds covered by water. There have been 10 successful landings on Mars - Viking 1, Viking 2, Pathfinder and Sojourner Rover, Spirit Rover, Opportunity Rover, Phoenix lander, Curiosity Rover, Insight lander, Perserverance Rover and Ingenuity drone, and the Chinese lander and Rover, mounting to 13 spacecraft. And several failed landings - Mars 2, Mars 3, Mars 6, Mars Polar Lander, Beagle lander and the Schrapelli lander, making 19 spacecraft in all. This is so, so tiny compared with the total surface area of Mars, that if one were to land on Mars at a random location, it would probably take a very long time indeed, MSN’s, many years, before you stumbled on a spacecraft from Earth.

I'm sure if we could somehow transport to Mars a drilling rig, (it's crew as well) not unlike an oil driller, we could take copious core samples from 6,000 ft deep & find something that either was alive at some point in Mars' history, or still is...alive. I'm curious to see if there's a subterranean cache of frozen water, or even petroleum of some sort. "Drill baby, DRILL!" -#45

Schiaparelli did not see canals; he saw "canali". The correct translation of canali is channels which are natural constructions while canals are not. It was an incorrect translation into English that started the rumor that canals had been spotted on Mars.

There is wreckage, that is British Mars probe Beagle Two. In fact a lot of probes have crashed on Mars, because it's very difficult to land on and that includes a NASA probe that crashed, because by the navigational computer, being given the wrong calculations. So pieces of the rover's landing gear is not surprising. Love your joke about a litter patrol. 😁 But seriously we are litterers, even the Moon and the bottom of the oceans have been contaminated. The trouble with the human brain, is that it likes to see patterns. 😁

the wreckage is not of Beagle Two. the wreckage is rather the remains of British Army Challenger 2 tank in Ukraine. the burnt crew was edited out for family friendliness. Once thought to be 'invincible' (almost like 'Titanic' once was thought to be 'unsinkable')

People like to think straight lines are always man made and the other common signs that are always assumed to be man made...I like to remind them that for example straight lines do exist naturally...they are just not commonly naturally formed...but anything and absolutely everything is not just possible but already exists...Ive been trying to think a bit differently recently...when I come across something common I don't immediately assume the common answer I take a moment take in information and form answers etc from there...sometimes gaining new perspective that I wouldn't have achieved any other way if any of that made any sense at all...I try to use the idea universally and wording it properly is not easy lol...

1:58 I disagree that discovery of life (either dead or alive) on Mars alone would "vastly increase" probability that life exists outside our solar system. Life could have been exchanged between Mars and Earth via fragments from asteroid impacts. But this does not mean that it must work interstellar, because the speed of fragments that can escape the gravity of a planet is probably not sufficient to overcome the gravity of the star, and also because extremophile life forms can probably not survive infinitely extreme conditions. So, only if the life on Mars had it's own abiogenese, and only if we are technologically able to determine that at all, it could change the probability around other stars.
