Wow, the host narrator even had the serial number of Elvis's rifle. It is out there somewhere. Interesting story.

Great story. I wonder what serial number my grandpa was issued? That would be awesome if I had that information and could find that M1.
@CivilianMarksmanshipProgram
You can request service records here. www.archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records/ Keep in mind that serial numbers for arms issued aren't always logged so you may not get that information when you receive the records. Good luck!

It is in somebody's collection somewhere. Unless they passed, and stupid relatives got rid of it. Anyone knowing it was issued to him would have snatched it up. Things were easy to "Disappear" in those days. He had to turn it in to somebody, guarantee they knew who he was.

So it’s a springfield right? Hope someone has it and puts it in a museum

It is definitely an awesome piece of history that deserves to be shared.

It's not like he got to keep his rifle, even if he was Elvis. This makes no sense at all.
@henrycalhoun5809

Sure, he would have had to return the rifle to the company armorer. What happened to it after that? Someone has it in his collection. It will eventually resurface, one day.

@night-x6793 10 месяцев назад
Normal standards it would be returned to the armory storage for the next new person to get it but is some cases that you can keep most military items if it been used or outdated for further service which is rare.

According to a collectors website that records serial numbers in a master list, that Garand was sold by the CMP at some point.

You forgot that the USA has given weapons to other nations, South Korea has some, I'm know other nations have some. Not to mention that gunsmiths sometimes will cannilbalise guns to rebuild others, some are stolen, some have been destroyed, and some were lost in service. Even though the M14 was being introduced in 1958, the M1 remained in service until 1970 with some U.S. units, that and the fact that almost 5.5 miliion of them were made means that it could be anywhere.

FFL got my Expert grade yesterday... Springfield, I remember the first number is a 2 and it was six digits long. There is a chance...

I’m hoping to make a trip to the cmp store sometime this month. Still trying to decide between a rack grade and expert grade. I guess I’ll just have to see what’s in stock.
@CivilianMarksmanshipProgram
We are looking forward to seeing you in store! Our stock may vary from what is available online.

3:23 he didn't own it, he was issued it. did I miss the part where he took it home? it sounds to me like he had it in Germany, and next thing you're saying is people think it was stolen from his home... my guess is it's still in Germany, or it was sold through DCM, or CMP and someone has it and doesn't know it

I would bet that the person that i was turned into when i had to be put back in the arsenal took it apart and mailed the reciver home to resemble later and something happened to them and the family has it put up in the attic or something like that.

When you join the Army, they issue you a rifle. You don't get to keep it. You have to give it back when you leave the Army.

I am sure there are other noteworthy people that can be traced to their service firearms like Charles Durning, I am sure Jimmy Stewart was issued a .45, ect. Bob Dole, GHW Bush, and more.

@terrysaunders2026
@terrysaunders2026 10 месяцев назад
@MMA10mm; Good question. I’m sure ALL veterans would like to return to civilian life with the arms they were issued. Other than his celebrity status how was he able to separate with a rifle that was currently issued at that time? Oh well, dumb question.
