Well, well, well. What have we here? Oogie Boogie huh? OH!!! I’m full of fear! Mwahahaha. Join me as I attempt to unravel one of "Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas'" most buggy characters in this creepy animated video dive into Oogie Boogie's origins and more! You know him. You most likely grew up with stories of a Boogie Man, boogeyman, boggart, hobgoblin, Sack Man, or similar, that would snatch up naughty children in the dead of night! Turns out, most everywhere under the shadow of the moon at night has stoires and tales of such creatures. And, maybe that’s why "The Nightmare Before Christmas’" Oogie Boogie strikes such a terrifying collective chord - Oogie Boogie is so frightening because he is a blank canvas (haha… because presumably he’s a burlap sack?!) for each person to project their fears onto. He is unpredictable and chaotic, and, I propose, an exact Anti-Claus, what with Lock, Shock and Barrel running around doing his bidding. Also, Oogie Boogie's BUGS. TOO MANY OOGIE BUGS. I also touch on the videogames, "The Pumpkin King," and "Oogie's Revenge," as well as ponder how Oogie Boogie was added to the movie to be an antagonist/redemption arch to Jack Skellington's Pumpkin King ego? So! Join me as I confront some early cinematic trauma (hello Oogie Boogie bug scene!) and attempt to unravel one of the most interesting and unsettling characters in “The Nightmare Before Christmas:'' the Oooogie Boogie Man!

actually, the canon states that the one bug always escaping and being squashed (by sandy claws in the movie and sequal game and by donald in the kingdom hearts games) is the core of oogie boogie. if that bug dosent get squashed, he can rebuild himself. in the original jack vs oogie fight (which like the verse of snake and spider stew was cut because they couldnt get the bugs right) oogie sent out all his bugs save his core to kill jack. after the swarm is defeated he claims he saved his best trick for last, and his core bug flies away, only to be squished by santa. but maybe the sack does play a role. it is most likely a vital part of him, as when his sack gets damaged enough his bugs start pouring out, as he screams a variant of "My Bugs." But if the core escapes he can rebuild himself. luckily the core invariably gets squashed by a supporting character.

The idea that Oogie is a sack is intriguing. It could be that Oogie works based on whatever people fear. Bugs, snakes, spiders, slimy things. These are all things people fear or make people retch in disgust. Its rather telling that Oogie thread came loose during a battle with one of the few beings that does not fear him. and that it was Jack that started that unraveling process. When confront by someone who does not fear him, his powers are diminished and he falls apart. The sack peels away, revealing what he is. Not so much bugs and snakes...but rather an amalgamation of every little fear, and fright. These things are frightening when all lumped together but...when exposed and brought to light they fall apart. I am the shadow on the moon at night. Filling your dreams to the brim with fright. A shadow is a formless entity and is generally exponentially more terrifying than what casts it. Always larger, always misshapen, always moving. This brings me to my thought. Oogie is not the bugs, nor the sack. He is simply..or rather a being that is empowered by fear. The sack is his means of gathering all the little fears and frights into himself, which then become his body. Any sack would probably serve his purpose.
@imjango1052
@imjango1052 3 года назад
So . . . He’s the postmortem manifestation of Jonathan Crane, aka The Scarecrow from Batman. Yeah, that works for me. Actually I really like your theory. Oogie’s power derives from the collective fear of him. The reason he himself is afraid of Jack is because Jack isn’t afraid of him, thus he has no power over him. Actually, that again ties back to Scarecrow because he is incapable of feeling fear unless he is being pursued by Batman. I’m not really trying to link them, but it is a nifty correlation.

Boogie Man traditionally has no solid form it’s just the embodiment of fear in a general sense. If something is creeping around a spooking you out, it’s the Boogie Man. Side Tangent: Oogie is the combination of every version of him. Sack Man, Bag Man, Bug Man, Boogie Man and Bug in particular used to mean Evil. So Bug Man could be understood as Evil Man

In Guatemala we have a Boogeyman called El Sombreron- "The Big Hat man". He's a small ogre-like man with a giant sombrero that rides a demon horse in the dead of night. He serenades beautiful girls with large brown eyes and long hair, and makes them fall in love him with him. He sings and loves to braid their hair (including the hair of his demon horse, which I find really funny). Then, when the girls are completely smitten with him, he leaves, and is never seen again. The girl is devastated and heartbroken, so much so that she doesn't eat or drink and starves to death. I believe the moral of the story is warning young women to be careful of men who speak pretty words and seduce you; they will break your heart and leave you

In the deleted scenes on the DVD, the writers considered and storyboarded a big villain reveal where Dr. Finkelstein was inside the Oogie Boogie suit, but they scrapped it because it didn’t make any sense with the rest of the movie as it was currently written because they established that Dr. Finkelstein was physically disabled and it would have felt out of character and cliché.

You forgot to mention that Oogie Boogie was a holiday leader himself, his holiday was Bugday. But when Humans collectively forgot/abandoned the holiday, his world began to disappear. Before it vanished completely, he gathered as many people as he could and ran to the Hinterlands where they went inside the Halloween door. He immediately tried to take over Halloween and that's when The Pumpkin King game starts.

Although I like your theory I personally think that Oogie is actually a bug hive-mind as, in the move, after the sack is removed Oogie is still able to move for a short period of time and is still able to speak when down to his last bug, indicating that he still has control over 'his bugs' (his fellow bugs maybe?) even when most of them fall to their demise into his own pit of goop. If we also take the games into account (though wither they are cannon is still up for debate as far as I remember) Oogie being a hive-mind would also explain how he returns in 'Oogie's Revenge' as only one bug would have had to survive for him to get away and have Lock Shock and Barrel collect more bugs for him so that he could come back later. In Oogie's Revenge he also has the ability to show himself as a shadow whilst being miles away which could help explain how Oogie gets his new bugs...It might be a stretch but maybe he has hidden dark magic that he uses to mind control new bugs to join him. This would also reference that some bogeyman depictions are shown as animated shadows. In turn I think the sack is just to help with physical movement allowing Oogie to be both malleable and to prevent him from being a lump of bugs with no way to escape from danger. Feel free to criticize if you have evidence otherwise! I'll look forward to seeing your thoughts.

There is a deleted scene I found when I got the movie's special edition which reveals that originally, Oogie was Dr. Finklestein. That leads me to believe that possibly, Dr. Finklestein could have possibly created Oogie.
@thejuicemaster8127
@thejuicemaster8127 3 года назад
I definitely like this idea better than the whole holiday leader thing. My version of Oogie's origin is that Finklestein created him and let him explore as he pleased. He wanted to contribute to the Halloween celebrations as best he could so he set off on his own to devise the most effective method of scaring. His "perfect" method showed to be overly violent and dangerous when he presented his findings to the rest of the town, however, and Jack Skellington confronted him about this only to find that Oogie could not be convinced that his way wasn't the best. Jack and the others alienated him after that, which not only explains why he's isolated from the rest of Halloween Town but why Finklestein is so overprotective of Sally. He doesn't want another one of his creations to turn out like that.

When I was a baby theorist, I came up with a theory that Oogie Boogie was the spirit of Dr Facilier (sorry for bad spelling) from the Princess and the Frog. It made sense back then, since most of the monsters in Halloween town are presumably dead, and Dr. Facilier died. He was sucked through a weird portal through a gravestone, and Jack was able to transport to Halloween town through a statue in a graveyard. They both are extremely scary and have a similar aesthetic. They also both have a chance related form of power, with Dr Facilier being a fortune teller and Oogie being a gambler. Now to me it’s sort of a joke, but still… I’m so bad explaining things but I hope you get the point.

I think that Oogie is actually a manifestation of things that scare people - sure the Bugs are prominent, but he also is comprised of snakes and bats as well. So really the idea behind Oogie is that he can cause such fear - enough to present himself as a large and intimidating figure. But he's actually incredibly cowardly and weak-willed; the moment Jack shows up, he knows he's in-trouble - he's more comfortable taking on restrained people who are clearly at a disadvantage, instead of someone equal in a straight-fight. The idea with Oogie is to deconstruct him - once you pull that one-thread, you realize that Oogie is only made of small things that aren't really scary - thus he loses his power, as the whole thing falls apart. Sure, Oogie is said to be depicted as the tiny green brain-bug that acts as the core of his being - the one that gets squashed by Santa in the movie and Donald in KH II; but I doubt that means Oogie is dead for good. First-off; most everyone in Halloween Town is dead - they're undead, and thus immortal. Secondly; you ever try to crush a really stubborn cockroach that just won't seem to die? I feel like that's Oogie's core-bug. Sure, you can step on him; but he'll bide his time, waiting for people to get scared again - and he'll gradually build himself back-up, until he's ready to roll-the-dice again.

In Brazil we don't have a traditional boogeyman. Our boogeyman is an old man who carries a garbage sack around, if he sees a kid during sunset or the night he kidnaps them. He tricks the kid by saying that there is a treasure inside the bag, when the kid looks inside he traps them and no matter how much you scream or kick no one will be able to hear you. Then he sells your organs in the black market, puts the money and gold inside the sack and uses to trick the next kid into looking inside.

Personally I think Oogie Boogie is just a spirit. It would explain why he's the shadow of the moon at night, but also how is able to project his Consciousness into so many bugs and things within his body. Also, once all the bugs leave his body and it's only left as a single insect it will try to flee until he's able to gather more again under his influence.

So, we all know the sandman right? Well, growing up my family has this sort of anti-sandman. The guy had a sack that would never run out of sand, no matter how much he used. He was basically the exact opposite of the normal sandman, sprinkling sand into a kid's eyes in order to give them Nightmares. My family called him the "sackman" because of his sack that never runs out of sand

My theory is that the bugs contain one fragment of Oogie’s soul each and that since the bugs slow die, Oogie needs to keep adding more to himself to stay alive. When he turns on final battle mode, he and his soul are still inside to be crushed as the rest of him empties from multiple hits to his stomach. But that’s only a theory.

What are the odds this gets posted the same day as my Oogie Boogie song cover! Lol!! Love this video and the movie so much it leaves so much to be figured out- my dad used to tell me his own made-up theories about how Jack got to Halloweentown as a kid it's so cool that through my 20 years on this planet something that's stayed consistent is the love of The Nightmare Before Christmas and how the fanbase changes and includes every generation, truly a fantastic film!

Every time they were between specific sculpts, the claymation team for Nightmare Before Christmas was told to make bugs. So EVERY claymation staffer made at least a few of Oogy's bugs.

I used to be absolutely obsessed with all things TNBC, so one small thing I’d like to add, in the game Oogie’s Revenge one of the characters (I believe Mr. Hyde) tells Jack that Lock, Shock and Barrel “sewed Oogie back together”. So I presume they got their hands on the sack again. What they stuffed him with I have no idea though

Your idea that Oogie Boogie takes on the characteristics of whatever he ingests kind of reminds me of No Face from Spirited Away. I wonder if No Face is supposed to be a Japanese take on the Sack Man or Bogeyman character?

One of my earliest films, love Oogie!🐛 I remember loving Audrey 2 from Little Shop of Horrors too, must be a jazzy villain thing. I found Lock, Shock and Barrel creepier as a child, they were so bold, they crossed over to the Easter world and successfully kidnapped the Easter bunny and totally got away with being double agents. They're a good cautionary tale on two faced people.😆

Sackmen and their behavior are very reminiscent of the Krampus, especially with Oogie Boogie already being seen as another Anti-Santa. It would be pretty interesting to consider Oogie Boogie's burlap body being a well used or disregarded bag of the Krampus. Everyone in Halloween Town gets filled in about "Sandy Claws" from Jack, but Ooogie Boogy (or at least the trio) seems to have some prior knowledge of Santa and even refers to him properly.

I heard that Oogie was the king of a no longer celebrated holiday (Bug day basically) so he and his bugs retreaded into the halloween holiday door, that one bug that santa crushed was him and wore the sack to keep his creepy crawlies close together. Because he didn't take being dethroned so well he wanted to be the king of this new world but he was always a bit afraid of Jack so he took the chance to take over Jack's place of power during the movie when the opportunity struck... but i have no idea where i heard that from, i was so little when i found that out that I'm not entirely sure what the source was.

In Argentina we have "El viejo de la bolsa" which translates to "The man with the sack" and it's supposed to be this very old man that would kidnap bratty children who threw tantrums all the time and was meant to scared them. When I was little, my nanny used to tell me that this man would stroll the streets when no one was watching and collect little kids when they came out outside to play. Hope that was helpful! :)

I don't think we can take the game prequel as canon, considering Jack's reason for taking over Christmas is that he's bored after so many years of being the Pumpkin King, so… :\

Here in Brazil we have the traditional sack man, but we also have other two similar legends. The opala preto (black opala) and the kombi do palhaço (clown kombi), both of which are from the 90's. The white kombi is a car, driven by clowns who would attract children with candies to sell their organs, and the black opala would do the same, just without the clowns. Also, those kinds of legends here have less of a ""don't be naughty" moral, and more of a "don't talk to strangers" moral.

Oogie's core is called a brain bug and im pretty sure it just exerts its will over the other bugs and he uses the sack to keep shape. And honestly whenever he is "revived" his personality is always a little off which makes me think its just a new brain bug maybe thats the real hive mind because he always remembers Jack. Also the rest of the bugs don't seem particularly loyal if they are given the chance to escape

Here in Czechia, St. Nicolas and Krampus work together. On St. Nick's day, St. Nick gives present to good children, but with him comes Krampus who puts bad children in his sack and takes them to hell. Just thought it may be an interesting addition to your theory of Santa Klaus and Oogie Boogie the sack man.

In my opinion Oogie didn't employed Lock , Shock and Barrel but actually forced them to help and work for him. They even said in the song "kidnap the Sandy claws " " we do our best to please him , and stay on his good side" . They are obviously enjoying to do so much mischief but are also scared of him . I think that those three kids are much more than just naughty kids, i think that they are the embodiment of " trick or treating " like , they are always playing pranks and their signature catchphrase is " TRICK OR TREAT" . So i think that Lock , shock and Barrel aren't just children that we're captured by Oogie , but a part of the Halloween entity . Just an opinion tho

I don't know if it came form a certain culture or its an archetype, but three references I can think of about a magic vacuum sack is from one episode of The Story Teller, where the hero says, "get in my sack" and anything he says it to has to go in there. He even captured Death and for a time everyone was immortal, but that caused so many problems he let Death out. Another is in Alex Jennings' book, "The Ballad of Perilous Graves," where Perry (for short) has the same type of sack, with the same proprieties. There is a character in the video game Lost in Random that acts as a smuggler of sorts, only the bag eats anything he puts in there. Abi! If you do gave I highly recommend you play "Lost in Random." Its graphics are meant to look like Nightmare and Coraline, and has the most brilliant dialogue I've ever seen in a game!! It is an indie game and has a few rough patches, but nothing that can destroy the experience
