Entry level is not when you ask for 2-5 yrs of experience. These companies ask for the unicorn expectations.

I am pretty sure this has been said a million times, but what's one more. Entry Level Cyber Security =/= Entry Level IT. We see this with the Jobs, we see this with the Certs. A+ and Security+ are both Entry Level, and yet Sec+ is MUCH harder. "We want 5 years experience" really means, we want someone who has worked in IT, and dealt with some Security for that time" Look at CISSP experience Reqs, a great example. You just need experience in 2 domains, you don't have to work as a "Security" job, just have experience in the domains. That said the Orginal comment I wanted to make, is that all jobs ask for Unicorns lol. Why wouldn't they post their wishlist? Doesn't mean that they won't settle.

@@cyberloccit appears you’ve missed the point a million and one times now. Most companies I’ve been applying for will literally tag jobs, such as SOC Analyst, as entry-level, and then put a requirement of 2-5 years in security operations. To break it down even further, they will put a requirement of 2-5 experience with Splunk or another SIEM tool, but the SOC Analyst role is the entry-level cybersecurity role in which a person would obtain that experience. Basically, entry-level roles should only put a qualification of 0-2 years of experience for anything that role pertains to if it’s obviously not part of normal IT operations. Next time, try reading the text on the job description before making an irrational assumption on what is being said.

We have plenty of early career IT professionals who have 2-5 years of technical work experience doing Networking, Sys Admin, or Helpdesk. They have degrees and certifications. They apply to 100/200+ cybersecurity jobs and still can land a role because they don’t have “Cybersecurity” experience. This is what happened to me. I went to a job fair in the spring and was complimented on how good my resume was but once I mentioned I was interested in a Cybersecurity role I was told they wanted people with security experience 😅. The funny thing is I recently passed the CISSP and I'm an associate of the ISC2 but I was told by Hiring Managers that I didn't have enough experience lol 🆗.

This is my biggest headache with the way companies hire for cybersecurity roles, we have the candidates but HR requirements are always 5+ yrs for an entry level cybersecurity analyst role and then wonder why their cybersecurity roles are hard to fill
@cyberlocc
@cyberlocc 10 месяцев назад
This is a misnomer. If someone has 2-5 years as a Sysadmin they have Security Experience. Security work is a large part of being a Sysadmin, your just not framing that experience correctly or you haven't been in IT for 5 years. Further if you have been in IT for 4 years, and have a Sec+ you don't need to be a "Associate" CISSP doesn't require a Security Role, it requires Security Experience, and you get that on the Helpdesk.... You fully get it as a Sysadmin or a NetTech.
@pkagent14
@pkagent14 10 месяцев назад
@@cyberlocc You must not be a "hiring manager" because every technical cybersecurity analyst who looks at my resume laughs at the idea that I don't have enough "IT Experience" to be a cybersecurity professional. The only professionals who complain about my lack of "cybersecurity" experience are hiring managers. In regards to my sys admin experience I managed Active Directory and Google Workspace for 2.5 years at my pervious company. I would occasionally update the firewall rules on our fortnite router, troubleshoot our zscaler VPN and remove viruses from employee laptops but that's the extend of my "cybersecurity" experience. Regarding the "Associate of ISC2" comment that my friend is an unfortunate tale. Long story short I found a new job in GRC about 6 months ago. Despite not having enough experience to be a CISSP my manager forced me to take the exam or face termination. My job payed for the exam and training but if I didn't pass the exam I would be SOL. Technically I have experience in the 3 of the 8 domains but I don't have 4 years of experience. Hope this clears things up.

I’m having the same issue. I graduated with my masters in information systems technology in January and I attained my security+ back in November. The struggle to find a job is so real. I keep getting told I don’t have enough experience but how else am I gonna get it if nobody wants to give me a chance 😭 lol. Im currently studying for my CISSP hoping that’ll give me a leg up.

They don't tell you you need experience for Helpdesk. First thing, stop thinking that, that 80k dollar a year Security Job is for fresh grads. It's not. There is a good saying, that factors around this. "Entry level Security" is not Entry Level IT. They want IT experience, to work in Security. You get Security Experience working in Entry level IT.

I have been working in IAM since it was a thing, maybe 10 years, and have a bachelors degree in computer and network security. I get no love at all in applying for cyber jobs. Trying to add some courses and certs now to see if it makes a difference.

Love your video! On your senior year, when/what month did you start applying for jobs?
@WithSandra
@WithSandra 10 месяцев назад
Thanks for watching :D! I started applying super early bc companies opened interviewing the summer before my senior year even started lol, so August 2018 before my senior year started, I already interviewed a bunch, had my offers by October/November 2018 which was when I signed for my fulltime role and then started the following July 2019 after I graduated in May 2019. I always tell people to start early bc my schools career fair wasn't even till Oct. So i think the earlier the better but starting today is the next best time if you haven't yet! Good luck!! Rmb it's a numbers game so apply to all the jobs you can, don't let the rejections get to you, I got hundreds of them when I was applying lol

Just a curious question, In the event i have a tough time getting my foot in the door of Cybersecurity, with a Bachelor's in Cybersecurity would I still be able to get other jobs like in Networking or Sys Admin jobs?
@pkagent14

It is easier getting a networking/ Sys Admin job. I would recommend that route if you are a new grad.

I’m working on my cybersecurity cert now and I geta voucher for the security + exam I also see a lot of job postings for it. But my realistic expectation is to start doing internships. I hope to do an internship in wmg or Sony music I also think tik tok has a lot of internships for cyber security and other IT positions. I hope this works for me because I want to commit to something I paid 17,800 already for this cert of njit
@WithSandra

Good luck on your Sec+ exam and cert program! You should start applying to jobs while studying for the cert since it's basically like doing interview prep at the same time. Try to look for cybersecurity rotational programs too, not just internships if you can.

Do you need to do a boot camp or can I just do COMPTIA A+, Network+ and/or Security+ certifications instead?
@WithSandra
@WithSandra 10 месяцев назад
Bootcamps are primarily there as a qualification on a resume OR for the technical projects and accountability it provides, which you likely can do on your own (finding what skills you need to learn, what tools companies want you to know, foundational concepts, etc.) but it’s just easier when a bootcamp outlines it for you. If you have the technical project experience on your resume (CTFs, certs, sought-after skills), you’ll likely still stand out even without a bootcamp on your resume, it’s really about the technical experience and if you have the skills companies want. So it’s really a preference of if you prefer DIY learning (self-taught) vs structured learning (bootcamps), good luck w your decision and keep us updated 😁

I'm surprised when people speculate in the comments. We require 2-5 years of experience in the IT industry plus those who do not need paid certificates and so on. I don’t know what calculations there are for such an opinion…. Entering the profession means NOT having any experience at all. People can change their profession in adulthood and never work in IT at all. Why are you here in the USA inventing bicycles and pretending that this is how it should be? No this is not correct. If a student who has only completed education in the field of cybersecurity. He will need to go to work as a clerk after 4 years of study. Or will you still receive some ridiculous certificates? Nonsense
