Leslie Nielsen started out as a straight/serious dramatic actor back in the 1950's and then his role on "Airplane!" changed his entire career trajectory.
The actor who played Nordberg who had the unfortunate luck in the beginning of the movie was OJ Simpson, former NFL player made infamous for the brutal murder of his ex-wife and her friend in 1994. His trial was deemed "The Trial of the Century" and the fact that he was ultimately acquitted of the crime despite a mountain of evidence was seen as a gross miscarriage of justice by much of America. He died of cancer recently, had a longer life than the mother of his children though.
Vincent Ludwig found a finger in his hot dog because Lt. Drebin's attacker at the stock yards fell into the rendering vat. The finger and the sinking hand both wore the same ring.
Naked Gun is a sequel to very short lived TV show called "Police Squad!". It only ran for 6 episodes in 1982. This movie opens by showing what Frank Drebben has been doing in the last 6 years... which is "saving the world".
Sorry I made a mistake the third Naked Gun film is Naked Gun 33⅓, if you like these types of comedy there's also Hotshots, Hotshots part Deux and serie's of films called Scary movie.
Mikhail Gorbachev, Idi Amin - dictator from Uganda, Ayatollah Khomeini (Iran), Muammar Ghadaffi (Libya), and Yasser Arafat (PLO) would have been instantly identifiable to audiences at the time.
If you watch "Top Gun" and the three classic "Rambo" movies, you will get the humor and in-jokes with the two "Hot Shots!" movies by the same filmmakers as "Airplane!" and "The Naked Gun" series.
Me and my siblings enjoyed Bosco growing up in the 1970s. It's a concentrated chocolate syrup that you add to milk. Came in a glass bottle. Delicious! (Naturally, we added more Bosco than the instructions indicated)
Police Squad was a TV show that only lasted 6 episodes. It was so funny but still cancelled. You should move your circle to one of the lower corners. They were eating pistachios. They used to be dyed red.
There are 3 Naked Gun movies, with a new one or remake on the way. Leslie Nielsen played a lot of villains before his turn to comedy, so it's wild that he's almost only known for his parody movies today. Others to catch are Spy Hard (Spy and action movie parodies), Wrongfully Accused (the Fugitive), and Dracula: Dead and Loving It (various Dracula films). For some of Leslie's serious work - Day of the Animals, the original Poseidon Adventure, and Forbidden Planet. His partner is played by George Kennedy, also a very serious actor before his turn to comedy. George was a staple of 70s disaster movies (all the Airport movies and Earthquake) and passed on Airplane! because he thought it would be disrespectful to the movies he worked on, but thankfully came around when asked to do Police Squad and the Naked Gun trilogy.
I learned an interesting thing about the wild west; Apparently they do not have civilized laws so ~if~ you break hard you are not pr default considered innocent for any accident that happens because of this, so many truckers refuse to ever break just because the person in front of them driving erratically, because IF an accident happens because someone in front of you doing something wrong it will be the person driving erratically who will be judged to be the cause of any accident, but if you break to avoid the accident then it will be you who is deemed to drive erratically so you turn an accident that is (legally) someone else's fault into your own fault. Civilized nations have laws that say that people are supposed to be able to handle their cars even if something unexpected (like a car/truck having to break in order to avoid an accident), so it's pretty much always the car that rear-ends another that is libel.
There's a video game called "Fallout 4". In the character creation feature you can choose your character to have very low "Intelligence" and very high "luck" and choose the "Idiot Savant" Perk. This would enable you to play the game almost like the way Frank Drebin does police work. (There might even be a 3rd party Mod that makes your character look like Drebin, though I'm not sure about that). Anyway, Drebin reminded me of that feature in the game. Fallout 4: Frank Drebin style. I've watched some players play this way and it was super hilarious when you compare it to the serious way it is normally played. The Fallout game is also a recent 8 episode TV series with its own peculiar brand of humour.
Another of my favorite movies with this type of nutty humor is "Transylvania Twist" 1989. There is also the "Police Squad" TV series, and the earlier "Get Smart" TV show.
Baseball players were known to chew tobacco back in the day. Chewing tobacco makes saliva, and thus makes you spit. Here they just exaggerated the spitting part for a quick laugh. This is a spoof movie after all... :)
Good reaction! Just an observation: 25:04 - Herman's Hermits' "I'm Into Something Good" was definitely not made just for the Naked Gun movie - it was a hit 1960s pop song from over 20 years earlier, and Herman's Hermits were a British band famous in both the UK and USA during that decade. The joke is that the end of the scene is overlayed with a caption as if it were an MTV video promoting the movie soundtrack. Since the band Herman's Hermits split in 1971, the lead singer Peter Noone has continued to perform to this day, and is now 76.
By the way... First of all it's Laplander. Secondly the word can refer to anyone living in either Swedish or Finnish Lapland. The indigenous people living in that area would be the Sámi people. THE MORE YOU ACTUALLY KNOW...
What he was saying is there's only a 10% chance that the 50-50 prognosis is correct at all: It doesn't only apply to the chance of survival, so doesn't mean 5% survival odds. The joke is the doctors just told him pure BS that means nothing.
