Belief in one God accompanied the birth of Judaism from the very beginning, although the overcoming of Phoenician-Canaanite polytheism is a point of arrival in the history of the Jewish people and not a point of departure. The overcoming of what had been pre-existing forms of polytheistic religiosity was not rapid, and we see traces of it precisely in the names applied to God in the Old Testament.
The first and most important name of God in the entire Torah is indicated with four letters and its etymology can be found in the root of "to be". We also have the names El and the plural Elohim.
El
This word means: divinity, divine being; idol or "image of a deity". It can also indicate only the divine nature. The Phoenician-Canaanite deities were members of a common pantheon, at the head of which was a god: El.
Elohim
The first meaning of Elohim is 'gods, goddesses' (plural), it can also mean 'the divine nature', and ultimately it can mean 'God'. However, its meaning is not always clear.
