Augh, you missed out the other Channel Islands, Alderney (3rd largest) Sark (4th largest) and Herm (5th largest) of the Channel Islands. You've also got Brecqhou, Jethou and Lihou which are tiny. Also worth a mention would be Les Ecrehous and Les Minquiers off the cost of Jersey. All very different Islands and stunning in their own right. I'm from Jersey. Hello 👋

As a Skyeman, I must insist that you retract the claim that Lewis and Harris is the 3rd largest island in the Atlantic Archipelago - they're only half an island each. Inter-island rivalry, I'd often thought that the name Lewis was related to the name McLeod - the Gàidhlig for Lewis is Leodhas, which could imply "Of Leod". However, in a dive down a wikipedian rabbit-hole, it appears this may be be a false-friend type situation (albeit there is a strong Leod/McLeod connection to Lewis) Finally, if you ever want voice recordings of the Gaidhlig names for places, people, or things for any future videos, I'd be happy to help. I don't ask for anything in return - I have nothing to promote or sell other than a desire to help strengthen and support the language.

Just a tiny addition on Skye, it has 2 names in Gaelic and had 2 similar names in Norse. One of them is "An t-Eilean Sgitheanach" which translates literally to "The Isle of Skye", but the other one is "Eilean a' Cheò" which means Isle of Mist, likely a translation from the Norse word "Skuy" which was the other Norse word to describe the island and translates to "Misty Isle".

The Channel Islands, i.e. Jersey & Guernsey, are the only remnants of the Duchy of Normandy that remain under the British Royal Crown and this is why the Queen is also the Duke of Normandy (not Duchess). The Jersey - Cesear link, or lack thereof, is interesting as New Jersey is found named as Nova Cesearia in some colonial documents.

I've been interested in the Shetlands and Orkney Islands for quite a few years now, or ever since I discovered Norn, the extinct language of these islands, and how closely releated they are to my native Icelandic. In fact, there are name placenames that are still in use which come straight from Old Norse, of which Icelandic is a close relative. The Shetlands are still known as Hjaltlandseyjar (Hilt land Islands) in Icelandic, and even their motto is 'Með lögum skal land byggja", which is the same as the Icelandic police uses (By law should the land be built, or something along those lines). And the same goes for Hrossey, that could just as well be an Icelandic placename, as are many others.

@molly.dog8brooke792
@molly.dog8brooke792 3 года назад
Allan Richardson I’ve never seen the movie, nor am I a historical expert... but I don’t think Henry 8th ruined Cathedrals, at least not intentionally, instead turning them Protestant after removing any signs of Catholicism? Monasteries and Friaries got different treatment, but I doubt Henry would’ve ruined Cathedrals that could’ve been useful? It could’ve been under him, but with my limited historical knowledge on the Reformation- it was likely done earlier (possibly vikings) or by looters/angry people during or after the Reformation?
@monkeymox2544
@monkeymox2544 3 года назад
@@molly.dog8brooke792 No, Henry VIII did have most of the monasteries closed - it was called the dissolution of the monasteries. As part of this process they had their treasures and the buildings themselves taken as property of the crown, the monks and nuns were evicted, and most relics were destroyed. Henry sold many of the buildings, which were subsequently dismantled for valuable building material, which sometimes involved burning them first. Other monastic buildings were deliberately destroyed on Henry's orders, because doing so asserted his authority over that of the Papacy. As for earlier peoples, yes the Vikings did sack monasteries, but they were generally rebuilt. The monastery on Lindisfarne, for example, was still maintained as a monastery until the dissolution, despite having been famously sacked by viking raiders hundreds of years earlier.

Did you know that Iceland is called Ísland (sometimes written as Island) in Icelandic? I have wondered over this for a while now. Lets start with the name of Iceland... "Ís" in Icelandic means just that... Ice. So why my country is called Iceland in English, is just the "real" or "original" name translated into English. But why is an bit of a land called "island" in English? English has the word "Isle" In Icelandic (and old Nordic) a "small bit of land, surrounded by water or sea" i.e. an island is called "EY" or "Eyja" many of them called "Eyjar" And that is exactly why so many islands about Britain are called "*ey" "*" is here being used to mean the "true" name of the place. "Ey" (or "ey") is used - not "island" Ireland and Britain are islands... and so is Iceland... and Áland...
