I think some people do but a lot of the public are arrogant and treat you like you dont exist. I have been a bus driver 2 weeks now and I tried to be happy with them now I think what's the point

SarahUK That's because this company have an awful staff turnover and fire all the 'Happy' drivers. Those happy drivers end up on Coach holiday tours never doing this job again. Blame the company it's their fault!

Peter Turley Agreed. This idiots got the wrong attitude totally. You only behave like that on Coach holiday tours not on dull public transport. Either likes the sound of his own voice or enjoys getting no tip for providing entertainment. If this idiot was let loose on Private hire coaches dealing with Chinese, British, and American corporate business based on executive contracts the company would sack him for his looney outbursts. On public transport like public buses and charter coaches you get no bonuses or incentives for this entertaining behaviour so what's the point?

There is a lot of difference. Coach drivers on private hire or tours are nothing like National Express drivers. The only thing they share in common is the PCV entitlement and driving a passenger Coach. Private hire groups hiring Coaches for their own trips out will often have a meal paid for the driver and have cokes on tab at the bar and give the driver a £30 tip for such a great day out. Tour coaches will have meal allowances for the driver staying in a hotel with B&B included in the cost and depending on how goof their holiday was or where they went can mean the driver can earn a good tip. Express will get none of this.

Rubber-Johnny Do you not know anything about Coach work? On private hire certain groups may or may not tip you and after a holiday tour away with passengers you usually get tipped. But on National Express where it's public transport you won't get so much as a skin flint.

Why do you expect the public to give you money for doing your job? You get a wage at the end of every week/month don't you? So why this expectation that passengers - who have bought a ticket - should then give you more money? I don't get tipped for doing my job and I don't expect to be either. Do you tip supermarket cashiers every time you do your shopping? Do you tip the bloke who comes to read your gas meter? Do you tip the nurses in the hospital when you're treated? What makes you so special?

Rubber-Johnny Whichever way you rant about it that isn't going to stop my groups of people buying a £20 meal for me, paying for all my cokes on a tab and giving me between a £30-50 tip for 9 hours work on top of my basic salary is it. What makes me so special? Nothing. You don't have to be. Unfortunately our man who's been with National Express for 16 years is an inbred and doesn't know any different same as you.

Rubber-Johnny Unfortunately in this day in age people expect something for nothing and that is why our society is such a wreck. Passengers expect to be entertained and have entertaining drivers when they buy a national express ticket for a tenner or less when the drivers are paid to drive the coach not to entertain. I could say entertainment comes from television, cinemas and cabaret shows where people pay a ticket and a price to be entertained. If you want laughs and smiles you can go off to pay to see a punch and Judy show. Why should the coach driver give you it for free? Why? There's perfectly good television licences they can buy to watch a comedy or cinemas they can go to so that eliminates the need for entertaining coach drivers.
