Love, love, love this video! I appreciate all the time and effort you put into this. I learned so much too. I think it’s so important to understand the history of the orange tree in Florida and what threats it faces today, and to know this is not just isolated to Florida. What you are doing is so important. Keep up the great work.

One can argue that the Florida citrus industry has been an environmental disaster by clearing tens of thousands of acres of scrub and sandhill habitat, transforming the land from a biologically rich native habitat to a monoculture of a single tree species from Asia. Many of Florida's endemic scrub and sandhill species on the Lake Wales Ridge are now on the federal and state endangered species list, principally due to the citrus industry.

A wind buffer on your mic would be very helpful in being able to hear what you are saying. So basically, spraying a tree with oak leaves ground in water is helping? How much is it helping, and how often do you have to spray?

Agree 😄 Lessons learned from that filming. For the everyday grower... just take oak leaves and mulch below your citrus. That is helping many gardeners. The university of florida study was doing an oak tea spray twice a day (if I remember correctly) but that was meant for agricultural purposes... not necessarily focused on home gardeners. Friends and neighbors who just use oak mulch have seen less mottling on their leaves reduced and better yields on oranges.

Thanks for drawing attention to this issue. I lost 3 citrus trees 5 years ago. my neighbour's orange trees are under oak trees. Those trees are still alive, but not well. The oranges don't ripen and branches have died back. I've planted persimmon trees and mango trees to replace the citrus

Citrus Greening has done a lot of damage. I hope your persimmon and mango give you 3x the yield of your orange trees!

honestly, I always thought to solution was changing it so they don't do endless rows of cities. Just mix in other trees, spray with black solider fly larve steep casting through it's lifetime. I hope they fix this issue but honestly bullet proof farming moment we hit a point where we gotta stop farming hyper monculture. There's the tech now that they could do cluser rows of 5 or something like that then pop in another type of tree of something.

I've only been following your channel (I hate calling it a "channel") for a few short weeks, but I've enjoyed it a lot. I saw a nine acre piece of land for sale near Ft Meyers. It has an orange grove on it. I know nothing about orange growing, so I did a tiny bit of research and came across the citrus greening problem. One of the videos I saw was from a fertilizer company that was doing trials using nutrients. Must have been about 8 products. But they seemed to have been working (grain of salt type of stuff). Saw another about citrus growing wild under live oaks and other types of trees. In my uneducated mind, my thought is that it could be nutrient deficiencies that are a main issue (as well as mono cropping). Something similar is happening to banana plants now, too.

I'm glad you like the channel! Growers are trying to compensate with citrus greening by over adding fertilizer. This only partially works. I know there were some new cocktails that were having some progress and there was some stem cell research using pig dna that was looking favorable... but the industry was really wary of consumers reaction and that stalled out. So in general it isn't a lack of nutrients that is causing it... but the disease blocking the nutrients getting into the plant. Hope that helps! :D

Hows it working so far? I have a little citrus tree i started from seed that i planted under 2 big oaks. Should i maybe start spraying it with the oak tea?

I haven't seen a direct update from the research on progress. I know that overall that all the various methods that they are using are having a positive impact on the crop. In my garden and my neighbors garden, we have been mulching with the oak leaves and I'm not seeing the evidence on some of the newer plants (3 calomondin trees) and my orange tree looks healthier this year and is putting out more flowers. If your tree is below the oak... no you don't need to spray. I would just use the dropped leaves to mulch around the citrus and that is it. 🍊

Oak is known for its anticeptic qualities. The disease is spread by bacteria. Is it a solution for the problem? If it were, there would be an application protocol by now.

Thank you for watching! That is a great idea to do a video on the oak tea! I know some growers are putting oak leaves at the base of their citrus trees and letting it naturally breakdown. Good information, but way too long, and bad sound. If I wanted all that history, I would have looked for it. Just wanted to know about the cure, and it took you almost 10 minutes to get to the point.
