One important thing that Jackson doesn't quite mention here: ● *Don't continuously wave around the toy!* The PAUSES are as important as the movement! Look at how rodents move: they don't just zip around all the time. So keep the toy STILL for a few seconds. THEN make a tiny motion, and watch your cat go nuts! 😺
@nadiaquerengasser1819

Thank you for this. This is such a good point and so true! The pauses do wonders for playtime. My cat likes really quick fast movements with pauses between.

@@radiomandelbrot5868 I think OP meant that there should be little, tiny pauses even in the middle of the "boil" phase. Not a rest period for the cat, but for the "prey." A second or two for the mouse, bird, squirrel, whatever to get a breath before they're off again.

Ever since I’ve started doing hunt.catch.kill.eat.groom.sleep. with my 10 month old cat she’s been letting us sleep through the night, so THANK YOU!!! I bought a few wands that mimic a real prey and started playing with her until she’s panting, every single night 😻😛

For how long do you play? I taught my kittens to sleep through the night (ot at least not bother us) the same way you teach dogs, basically. The first time they got here, they did not have access to the whole house, 10 pm lights out, I’d lay down with them on the floor until they fallen asleep (on me haha). Then, I put them into their beds and good night until my alarm goes on. As they grew up they started knowing when was the time to leave the room before the alarm haha. Anyway, they gained access to the house little by little and today (4 months) they sleep with me and my bf with no problems :) They just don’t have access to the kitchen. All the rest is their house :)

@@annedavis3340 true!! We lost our last love, he died within hours of the first sign of any kind of illness. I mean it happened so fast and we had no idea what happened until we found half of a shoelace, chewed through. It can kill quicker than you have time to think your cat is even sick! Broke all of our hearts, and I was 8 months pregnant at the time. We raised him when his mama, a stray, decided to have her litter on our porch. We took her and her 5 little kittens in and let her raise them for about 4 months, then one day she started wanting outside again and left them with us and we found homes for Mama and the other 4. He was one of the best cats ever, and only got to be with us for a year and a half before the string incident. Be very careful with strings!!
@annedavis3340
@annedavis3340 3 года назад
@@clairefisher3132 I'm so so sorry for your loss. I cried reading that. My cat Freya grabbed a pile of thread I was pulling off of clothes I had just bought. My husband got the little heap of thread back from her, I looked, and saw that a piece of green embroidery floss I *specifically* remembered wasn't on the pile. We went to check where she had run to. Nope. We looked at each other, knew we'd rather have a ridiculously high bill for a cat that HADN'T eaten embroidery floss than risk not taking her in if she HAD, and took her straight to the emergency clinic, during covid. They picked her up on the curb, and phoned to ask how we wanted to proceed: they could TRY to make her throw it up, but it's actually very difficult to successfully make cats vomit, and they specifically warned us that if part of the thread stayed caught in her stomach when the rest came up she'd still need surgery to close THOSE holes. It's agonizing sitting in a dark car worrying about your cat and knowing what the surgery might end up being. We were at the vet maybe 15 minutes after she'd swallowed it and we were still lucky: she threw it up (yay) and it all came out in one not-caught piece (VERY yay). They gave me back the embroidery floss. Still green, and deadly. We were lucky. We watched several people get told their pets hadn't made it, while we waited. I still think about it. We watched her like anxious hawks for days and made sure her stool was normal, cause we didn't know if maybe there had been some cut that hadn't clued the vet in with blood when she vomited. She's fine. My mom still talks about how amazed she is that I knew what threads were and weren't in the pile of thread my husband brought back to me. It obviously could have ended very differently. I knew about linear foreign bodies cause the Vancouver Vet RU-vid channel (highly recommend) had done a holiday video on them as a warning about the dangers of tinsel 😭

My oldest cat used to play tag with me. She would wait for me to come up to her and then take off, then stop and wait for me to catch up. I knew she was having fun because of her body language. She would actually ask me to do it by coming up to me and then dashing away without any movement from me, then stop and look at me, waiting for me to come get her. I have never had a cat do that before.

I was adopted by a kitty back in 2004. She'd been a friendly neighborhood cat who decided I was worth claiming full time and her name was Sota. She started out an outside cat I slowly acclimated to being indoor/outdoor, then eventually all indoors. When she was i/o, she'd wake me up at 3am, and I thought she wanted to come back in. For a while I could lure her in with treats... then finally, then one night was awake enough to realize she didn't want to come in- she wanted me to come out! She danced across the front porch, with her tail arched, and DUH! Okay, you want to play tag... This would start the every year on the first cool night we had in FL, and continued until warm weather. I never knew of my neighbors ever saw me out at midnight, on a cold night, playing tag around the house. She loved going for walks at night, too, where she'd lag back, then tear by me, tapping my ankle as she went by. After battling chronic renal failure for several years, she told me before Xmas it was time to say goodbye. It's a decision most of us have had to make, and I'm lucky I had over 18 years fun-filled years with her. After a few "too quiet" weeks, I adopted a gorgeous young Abyssinian- the first toy we played with? A Jackson Galaxy kitty feather wand :)

my sister's cat does it a little differently. First one of us stomps after him as he walks away from us with his body going low to the ground (which I would normally find concerning, but you can tell he really enjoys it), until the human in question suddenly sprints in the other direction and he immediately chases after them, even jumping at the leg to 'catch' them (keeps his claws in)

I was so guilty of playing with my cat wrong! My male has been pleading for tons of playtime and nothing I did seemed to satisfy . Once he adjusted to the Boil and simmer ( It did take a little for him to adjust to a more intuitive playtime) he fusses way less and is super engaged in playtime taking the crouch and wiggle when he hunts the toy.. and today he started taking different angles , hiding from the toy and then pouncing it. Its more fun for me and more fun for him ! I cant thank you enough for this video!

Sister lived to 16 yrs 10 months. A 4 mo old female kitten just adopted us by running away from the neighbors to us three times. They gave her to us. I rescued an 8 yr old male last year and he has welcomed her with open paws. He’s dad, guardian and playmate. I just worry she gets very rough. I’m going to play with her more so he gets a break.

I adopted a very sweet cat 2 months ago who was found in a barn with her 2 kittens. I suspect she was a stray as she was well socialized to humans. While she is very affectionate she is also anxious and has slowly been losing weight despite eating like a horse. Her stools are negative for parasites. Nevertheless, the vet dewormed her but no change in her condition. No other medical conditions other than anxiety. I watched this video recently and began a hunt, catch, kill, eat program with her 3 times a day. To my amazement, she is starting to gain weight! Thank you Jackson. You really made a difference.

Our 15 year old cat recently passed on. She was actually a good mouser and caught her last mouse about 6 months ago. But we always had trouble getting her to chase a toy. If you flicked it under her nose, she would play with it. But if she had to run, it was no dice. We rushed her to the emergency vet when she had a heart attack, and the vet finally took an ultrasound of her heart. She said our cat had a congenital heart defect common to her breed. She was mixed breed, but the mix didn't help her much. It explained so much about how her mind was always there to catch the prey, but often not her body. She was mentally alert until she collapsed in my husband's arms.

My second cat, Boo, not so much. She had some health issues when I first adopted her. They’re mostly cleared up and she’s just waiting on a dental cleaning and tooth extraction. However, she doesn’t want to bite anything because it hurts. It has seriously been a challenge to get her to play. I found she loves to chase after it and bap it. I even got her panting the other day! Her confidence is sky high and I’m looking forward to watching her changes after she heals from her dental visit. I also really enjoy her liking me somewhat. She’s still unsure about me, but I’ll be patient with her and earn her trust.

So I've got a 10 year old (the vet guesses) Maine Coon that will not play, period. I've had no trouble getting any other cat to play, so it's not technique. He was feral, and I suspect it's got something to do with his not wanting to be in the physical proximity to a human. I doubled the length of the stick, but still nothing. I tried a long shoestring, slowly drug across the floor. He showed interest, but wouldn't go after it. The only luck I've had is a string with a bell on the end of it, tied to the back of a dining room chair- as long as I'm not close to it. He's been to the vet and gotten a clean bill of health.

@@drfreud65 Hm. Reminds me a bit of my Tiger from when I was a kid/teenager. He was also a Maine Coon and had problems with pretty much everybody (traumatic kittenhood involving being left in a cardboard box with his littermates on the side of the road in a thunderstorm and who knows what else), especially at first. It took months of work with him before before he learned to fully trust us (Mom, my sister and me and that's it; he wasn't willing to go any further), but even then he was never really big on playing with toys. It wasn't a question of energy or anything- he had plenty of that. It's like he figured chasing strings and balls of feathers was a bit pointless. Maybe it's to do with size, as MCs are some rather large kitties, so maybe they need something a more substantial that someone like my Mom never thought of. These cats are also crazy smart, so that probably figures in too.

This was excellent Jackson! Nobody ever talks about or demonstrates just HOW you play with a cat! I’ve had cats since I was a kid and have learned what they like by trial and error as well as just years of acute observation (because I am an animal/creature behaviorist at heart) and what you say is absolutely right on the money! My cats loved playing hide and seek… they hide behind or under something and I drag or tease with their toy just out of range as though prey would, not knowing they were in danger. That was the favorite thing to them and also dragging a toy mouse, paper knot, feather on a string behind me as I run through the house on short sprints. Sometimes I would hide (a little conspicuously) behind a door and watch as they creep up and jump out and chase when they arrive. Cats play that game with each other a lot.

I’m so glad I found his RU-vid channel! I remember when I first got my cat YEARS back (she’s 7-8 now I’m 26) and he helped me learn how to read cats. After breaks-ups, moving and new jobs, I have brought my cat every where with me. Granted, my doctor has a note for me since she is my emotional support animal and I have bipolar, I don’t face the pet fees. This doesn’t mean I have free reign to bring her anywhere and she just shared living space with me. She is a PART of my life. I have to take care of her: good diet, vet visits, inform my roommates and educate them. I do spend the weekend with my boyfriend and I had to learn how to accommodate these sleepovers to my cat’s routine, which still means she gets a clean litter box every day. I have incorporated an auto feeder that I can also control using an app. She eats so fast and has pica, which causes her to throw up. Before I just thought it was because it was normal, but she was stealing food from my roommate’s cat (we needed to get them on the same schedule and he’s on a different diet & monitor they don’t steal one another’s food). Keeping the routine is ongoing. Luckily I work from home at the moment, but when I was a barista and server, I “had no control”. It’s just practicing awareness - keep your area clean, you keep and make your own routine… cats can teach you a lot about mental health.

One of my cats is blind and we didn´t knew how to play with her because she got scared so esaly of sudden noises and well, she never sees the toy, but we discover that she enjoys playing with paper balls rolling on the floor because she can hunt the ball by following the sound and that´s when we discovered that she was actually very playful, and she seems more happy now that we play just a little bit with her

Thank you for everything you do. Thanks to you, my house is catified, I have introduced raw food, and I have a ton of toys. My cats meow outside the closet where I keep the wand safe when not in use, and they sit at my feet at playtime waiting for me to get the party started. They jump really high trying to get the “bird,” and I am wondering if this is okay for their joints.

My cat never used to play like any other cat I’ve met. She wasn’t violent in the slightest, never bit, and never kicked with her back legs, even if you pet her belly for minutes. She never really liked kick toys or wands or even feathers. She trilled (didn’t meow) during playtime, she would chase anything round and jingly that I threw for her. Her favorite game was watching as I pulled a pen juuuuuuust out of site and she would go crazy. Now I have a burly man who is SHARP and takes aggressive leaps of faith at anything feathery without any consideration for his bodily safety. Cats are so wildly unique with their play styles.

i'm so glad you made this! i've had cats my whole life and naturally use their toys to imitate prey because i know it'll get them excited, but my friends will do the 'dangle and ignore" and tell me my cats aren't interested in playing anymore. i'm like "gimme that!" and show them how you have to hide the toy, let them stalk it, then start a chase. it's pretty simple once you understand the reasoning.

Thank you so much for this video. About a month ago I found a 4 week old kitten abandon in an alley while walking my dogs. She had a rough first week getting settled and getting her diet right but now she is a happy healthy kitty growing fast. The vet adores her and says she is doing great. Because she is still small I don’t want her running around at night just yet so I have a pet playpen she sleeps in at night in bed with me, my pitty and chihuahua. She has recently been a giant ball of hyper and not letting me sleep at night. I watched this video last night after finding it and can see a huge difference already. She does just what you said she would do. Tonight will be the first night we get to sleep how well she sleeps after spending the day getting played with correctly. Thank you for all your videos, they’ve helped a new cat owner so much.

Visiters often think she's like 4yro at most. I had two friends over that both have cats and they both played with her and she still have lots of energy left! Amazing how much energy an "almost senior" can have! Also she is a bit smaller in stature and bc high quality food her fur is very shiny and nice, which ofc play into why people think she is so young.

Thanks for this video, Jackson, it was as always helpful, but... I could really need one about playing with _two_ cats. My older cat (6) looks very interested at first, but as soon as the little one is going for it, he backs off, and I swear he looks dissapointed and beaten. He was so into playing before the youngster got here. Separating them doesnt work, too, because the little one is then screaming outside the closed door, distracting the old one so much that he can't concentrate. Trying to get the young one first to exhaustion is also very hard - as bluecannibaleyes said, my 2 year old is jumping back in the game almost immediately again, leaving my older one no chance to play. Also - I can't find a way to get the wand toy back from him. He is leading me underneath a table/bed and holding it tight, so I have to stand there for quite a while trying to pull it away again, or leave him alone, what I don't dare to do because of the string. Throwing treats or other toys to make him let go doesnt work aswell. Any hints anybody? Thanks so much.

What a fantastic video! Jackson Galaxy is so wise and intuitive when it comes to caring for our felines! I want to add to this.. as a healer of felines, that cats (and animals) have a need for meaning in their lives. I've discovered that if they don't feel like have it, they can lose the will to live. The hunt gives them that sense of purpose, and feeling like they've provided for the family. Another way they can get that sense of meaning is by making sure you play once in awhile (life should be fun!), and a 3rd is to help us feel loved!
