The naval battle of Guadalcanal was brutal and terrifying. I recalled one US sailor saying there’s no foxhole on the ocean. When the shooting starts, there’s no place to hide.

And imagine if you were below decks as a boiler operator or something. You knew if the ship went down, you were going down with it... Imagine the balls those guys had.

The sole survivor policy was enacted to me. My father died in Afghanistan. When I graduated high school I was set to enlist but before then they told me that most likely I would not see combat since I’m the last male in my family.

Plen122 honestly kinda mixed. My mother didn’t want me to go out to combat but really the intention was to go out there. I ended up joining the army and went into a non combat role.

There is no actual good video documentaries on this battle. The stories of it are legendary. Japanese destroyers Yuudachi gained a legendary title, Amatsukaze captained by Tamiechi Hara were awarded invaluable experience, and Yukikaze survived another fierce engagement. Atlanta lost her main admiral from friendly fire. The Sullivans brothers were all regrettably killed. And all the fighting was so close, ships came in FEET of each other. Laffey demonstrates true heroism by ripping apart Battleship Hiei’s decks. So many important ships would sink in this little-known battle. Never before and never again would there be an engagement as intense, knife-fighty, and visceral as this.

The next night battleships USS Washington and USS South Dakota and their escorts met two Japanese battleships and their escorts south of Savo Island. In that slug fest Washington shot up one battleship to junk but South Dakota was seriously damaged in the battle. The Japanese ultimately scuttled both battleships and they are now part of Iron Bottom Sound.

From what I understand the Sullivan brothers (God bless them all and may they rest in peace ) where not the only sets of brothers on the Jeneau. I say this NOT to lessen the impact of there loss but to highlight the loss of so many other families that also lost more than one son on the ship. GOD BLESS EVERYONE OF THEM.

the good news we wiped out the Japanese Fleet the bad news they sank us. We lost four heavy cruisers and 10 destroyers and the Japanese lost two battleships, a heavy cruiser, and 9 destroyers. The Naval Battle of Guadalcanal was bloody there was no victor both sides suffered heavy losses and only the US got a strategic victory.

Please cover the next night. Halsey sent two battleships into the confining waters of 'the slot'. At one point the only thing stopping a bombardment on the airfield was USS Washington with its 'radar understanding' admiral Lee. The Kirishima had reports of cruisers not battleships. Well they were educated soon after targets were cleared and firing commenced from her 16" guns , radar guided. Let's just say, no shore bombardment of marines occured that night. Also, thank admiral Lee and Capt Glenn for avoiding long lances from the departing IJN.
