The Nazis Were shocked By How Russian Troops Fought In World War II

This clip is a portion of my documentary television special titled How Hitler Lost The War. To make it, I had the opportunity to interview German fighter pilots as well as German/Nazi ground troops who fought in the Russian campaign in the early 1940s. The soldier speaking describes winter in Russia and how Siberian troops, dressed in white, fought in snow like it was summer time. The cold did not seem to bother them even though the German frontline troops were unable to fight, even unable to move their tanks forward due to the extreme cold.
The most shocking moment in this clip is where the gentleman speaking describes that the Russians first used cows to uncover and blow up landmines and then, when they had no cows left, used Russian troops, who marched forward arm in arm and were blown up by the mines.
It is a horrific story about a horrific battle in World War II that the Germans lost.
My documentary film has extraordinary interviews with pilots, tank commanders and others who knew Hitler - who talked with him -- who watched and debated his decisions. These historical interviews present a view of what the German nation (Empire) might have achieved on and off the battlefield had Hitler been less erratic in his decisions and let his military commanders take the lead.

It is a little sad when one reads the title to this video - NAZI troops! As the years have gone by, and, I am now in my 7th decade of life, born in 1941, WW2 has been ever predominant within my mind. There has been much said and written about German military commanders, and other high ranking officers, who loathed Hitler's regime - nevertheless, fought for their nation's pride. Yet, little has been said, or even asked, of the lowly German soldier called upon by his nation to loyally go out and fight for the Fatherland's cause. In hindsight, can one fairly say that every German enlisted young man was a fully paid up member of the NAZI party. I doubt it! Can we honestly say that every German soldier was a NAZI trooper? No we can't. To vilify the whole nation of Germany during WW2 as being NAZI was wrong! And, I am a Brit! My father, who served in the RAF in WW2, was seriously injured by a German bomb. Did he suffer any anti-German sentiment? Not one bit!

Hi, David. No problem with your video, which I found very informative. It was the title that caught my eye. I have come across the description 'Nazi troops' in other historical titles. It brings to mind the horrific acts committed by the likes of the SS, Gestapo and other agencies of the NAZI regime, seeing their work as some of the most despicable against fellow man. Arguably, the most vicious fighting took place on the eastern front. In the 1950's, my father worked with an ex-German POW who spent most of the war interned in the UK. He was, like hundreds of other pow's, put to work helping farmers'. At the end of hostilities, he, like hundreds of other German and Italian pow's, fed up with fascism, opted to remain in the UK, feeling assimilated into the British way of life. At that time Britain, also, offered a home to many of Europe's, displaced people. My mother worked in an office with one such person, a lovely Jewish lady from Poland who had lost virtually all her family during the terrible happenings empowered by the NAZI regime and the minions that carried out their bidding without question - the NAZI troopers! In my youthful ignorance, I was about ten years old at the time, I asked the lady what it was like where she came from. Her eyes filled up, she gave me a wistful smile, and gently patted me on my head. It has had a lasting affect upon me. Kindest regards, Bill.

Beautiful thoughts, beautifully written, William. Thank you. I'll respect for your position, which I don't disagree with, let me tell you that the reason that the word Nazi is in the title is because of the way RU-vid search engines and keywords work. My goal is to get as many views as I can for this clip from my documentary with the hope that some will purchase the DVD or download from Amazon. Each month, quite a few do. That is why I use that terminology, not to demean Germans of goodwill whose ancestors tried to live through those times and survive. David Hoffman-filmmaker

im young , you are my fathers age but i asked my grandfather about the war a lot . we are dutch , 50 kilometer from Germany we were ocupied and all our men were taken to Germany . most of them to work ( farmers got taken to farm for the germans ) now my point is , my grandfather absolutely hated the germans for what they did , he suffered post traumatic symptoms . he hated them and damned me for visiting Germany . but even he had nothing against the soldiers as he saw them up close in their everyday life when he worked in Germany and later in the war when he was on his own farm the germans had a sleeping point in his farm . he felt pity for the 18 year old kids the german army was made of in the end , at night they were crying for their mothers . nobody asked for this war except the top elite who never touched combat themselves . the americans often discribe all germans from those days as nazis , this is a huge insult because that was not what it was like

A lot of people are forgetting that when the narrator says the Russian tanks were better this was during the counter attack the Germans were mainly using panzer III's and IV's with a mix of short and long cannons. Though the T-34 was ergonomically worse the armor was good at the time the Germans felt that they were being outclassed because they were having a hard time penetrating it. This changed with the introduction of the panther and tiger tanks as well as more long barreled panzer IV's with extra armor. Then Germans once again felt they had the better vehicles (which they did). Source: Various German accounts from the eastern front throughout the war that I've read

Not all German soldiers were Nazis "This has to be the most common misconception people have about the German army - that they were all Nazis. Saying that every German soldier was a Nazi is like saying that every current serving Australian soldier is a Liberal. The German army had roots in strong Prussian tradition, and part of this tradition was that every soldier was to reject any political ties. In the Wehrmacht (the German army), it was illegal for any soldier to be affiliated with, or a member of, a political party, including the Nazi party. People, of course, argue against this with, ‘the German uniform has a Swastika on it’, and this is true. However, people often forget or ignore that the Swastika was the official flag of Germany at the time. It is also worth mentioning that between 1933 and 1945 there were more than 25 assassination attempts on Adolf Hitler’s life, with nearly all the attempts made by German army, and even SS, officers." www.historyalive.com.au/five-things-you-probably-didnt-know-about-world-war-ii-germany/

On the contrary, I think that precisely writing "German" instead of Nazi would be insulting for the entire German nation. That's the reason why one does not write "German concentration camps", but "Nazi (German) concentration camps", etc. Let us not forget that many anti-Nazi Germans paid dearly for not being willing to participate in Hitler's mindless agression. The least the world can do to honour them is not to confuse their memory with the ones who opted for going with the flow.

There is a lot of discussion on the tank statement, The T-34 was not better.. but when you look at its ability to be operated simply, over a range of temperatures, to be built in mass, and to be able to keep at battle day after day, it quickly outnumbered the better engineered, but much less numerous German Tanks. It had many faults, but it had one glaring advantage; Simplicity!. Given a fixed amount of time, with x amount of materials and y amount of fuel... the T-34 simply overwhelmed the opposition. Best tank of the war in my opinion was the Panther, which Manstein wanted to use to reduce the objective of Kursk. Alas, Hitler insisted on waiting until the ill conceived Tiger was ready.. By then, Manstein knew Hitler had lost the initiative. At Kursk the Russians lost incredible numbers of people and machines, but they held on to the line. War, as MacArthur said is won often by a whisker. Russia had an excellent whisker in the T-34. If Hitler had not intervened and Manstein could have attacked the Kursk Salient with Panthers and the current state of German maintenance, I feel he would have prevailed. Alas, Churchill decided not to kill Hitler by an Assassin because, keeping Hitler Alive was a better idea. This is clearly shown by Hitler tying Manstein's hands at Kursk. With the Tiger, few got in to battle, good as they were, and many broke down with teething problems. Amazingly, the Russians with T-34s prevailed and ultimately took Berlin. The T-34 represents the best of WWII common sense. Is it Soviet Genius? I think not, but it is what they had, and they played the hand given very well. The German's clearly had engineering genius on so many levels, but Genius is not enough. You need good common sense hardware and good hardy people. We owe much to the common USSR soldier. Much less to Stalin. They took perhaps as many as twenty million deaths to defeat Hitler. The end of Hitler was an Allied effort, but the Russians bore the brunt for more years than anyone. It was their Great Patriotic War.
@wolfgangholtzclaw2637
@wolfgangholtzclaw2637 6 лет назад
I agree with you on the T-34 being a better tank for the Soviets than the Tiger was for the Germans. Manstein was no Idiot he came through the Prussian military and held his position because when it came to operational planning, he was viewed as the best. Hitler was no Idiot, but he was a political genius but fought the war with World War I ideas. The Prussian upper staff of the German Army had progressed greatly from the ways of the first World War, their doctrine on blitzkrieg was so good it was borrowed by the USSR and the United States. The United States Army polished it up and later called it Air Land Battle. Hitler made many blunders too numerous to mention here, that eventually doomed his country. Having the Army wait on the new Tigers to begin the Kursk Offensive is one of his major ones. But we can agree to disagree, thanks for sharing your views with me. Peace to you!

@Babd the unreliability of the tiger is a revisionist myth propagated from fear of commanders to help morale. After the first few hundred they fixed the transmissions. Statistically, it was the most effective, tank killing l, tank in the war. With less than 2 thousand made and the Germans being meticulous record keepers, its an easy calculation. The turret rotation speed is average for a heavy tank. And as for the t 34s, until the late war models, as many of them were lost due to breakdowns or manufacturing flaws as were lost in combat.
@FirstLast-ie1bs

No, the Siberian troops were transferred because winter had begun, and to attack Russia in the winter was a very stupid undertaking, especially from Siberia ... Stalin did not believe any treaties with the Japanese, but believed in their prudence ... The Siberian divisions made the main Work in the protection of Moscow ... Moscow was already in a panic, food warehouses were open to looting the population ... If the city is lost, it is best if all of its food stocks will plunder the local population than pass into the hands of the enemy army ... To protect the city Were thrown all The forces that could be defended even the students under the command of their professors with weapons, which was taken from museums ... My grandmother told me that when I saw the Siberian soldiers on the streets of Moscow, she realized that Moscow would not be lost ... Gloomy, not smiling soldiers In white fur coats inspired confidence in victory ... Despite the Western rumors about the fact that a strong winter helped the Russians this is not true. The winter was very warm, -10 degrees Celsius, this is a very warm winter for Russia and especially for Siberian divisions ... The Germans were not prepared even for such a mild winter, their outfits got stuck in transport logistics and they were dressed in something they could take away from the local Civilians or take off the bodies of dead Russians ... The German army no longer resembled an army and was more like a bunch of homeless ... They became easy prey for the Siberian divisions ... It must be very insane to fight the Siberian divisions in the winter ... In Siberia is a normal winter t mperatura below -20 degrees Celsius, the average temperature is ... Summer is just three months a year. What did the German soldiers, pampered by the European climate, count on ???

ROFL not even fucking close. A 50mm Panzer 3 could destroy any t34...whether the 76mm or 85mm. You did NOT need an 88mm gun to take out a fucking shitty t34 bahahaha. The only commie tanks that you needed a 75mm gun for were the kv 1's and 2's...and the is tanks obviously
@rickgreen7005
@rickgreen7005 7 лет назад
What? So the fact that kraut armor complained about not being able to punch the sloped armor of the t34 was just a myth then? Dude, even the sherman ripped panzer 3 a new one, and even the grant was enough to chase those krauts out of N. Africa.
@rickgreen7005
@rickgreen7005 7 лет назад
UFCMania155 hahaha, dream on bud. Even if your toxic kraut mind wants to believe that, a 50 mm aint punching through thick, well made steel sloped armor, at all. Even if it could, the Sov's and Yanks still out produced your ass, and made more reliable machinery, which is what really counts in a mechanized war. So go polish Porsche's grave stone, his cars are still breaking down right now! (and making many AMERICAN AND RUSSIAN mechanics a pretty penny off their dumbass kraut loving owners) If you can get access to one, I highly recommend you read an ASM or ASTM handbook (if you're kraut sucking brain can handle it). Then compare US, Soviet, and kraut alloys to the standards. You'll learn really quick how much better the steel on Allied and Soviet tanks was. (I guess I should say when you're stuck with shitty ore and scrap, you aren't going to be making any good metal any time soon). But I don't expect a (likely) fat neo nazi pile of shit to even have the mental capacity to play solitaire And before you give me any german engineering (aka bullshit) lecture, you need to realize the only reason german cars are even drive-able is because they took design philosophies from Ford, GM, Dodge/Chrysler, Toyota, Honda, and Nissan (shit, even the French make better, though less fun to drive cars). Shit, every mercedes owner would be scorched alive right off the lot if not for mercedes contracting their electrical work out to the Japanese. hahahaha, germany loses again (like always, just look, they bend over and take it up the rear from a couple of towel heads every day of the week)

Initially on operation Barbarossa when the T34 was encountered by the Germans it was drastically superior to panzers on a few principles(mostly armor). However the Russians used their tanks much more like the allies did at the start of WW2 which proved to be a huge mistake for France. Combining this with the fact that the Russians still used hand signals/flags instead of radios, didn't have range finders on thier optics, had questionable metal qualities and gun accuracy. Many factors proved early on that even an inferior panzers backed with superior tactics, training and communication was a winning hand.(initially) Later on the Russians really learned how to use the T34 to deadly effect, especially at Stalingrad. But throughout the war panzers in general had much better communication, crew compartments, gun optics, accuracy, and plenty of other things. The main disadvantage of a panzer was actually lack of gas, this holds same to the German war effort as a whole.

I'm getting more and more irritated by the "winter" explanation. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Russian man doesn't exactly come with a radiator inside of his body. Battle of Kursk and operation Bagration happened in the middle of the summer, but I don't hear anybody blaming the mosquitoes for Germans getting ASS-FUCKED by the Soviets. Underestimating Russian military prowess has been an idiotic sport played by the many western "experts" who never experienced Russian people first-handily or never read any decent book about the Russian history. Russia wasn't always as populous as it is today. And Russia was often invaded by nations that are more than used to harsh winters - like Mongols, Swedes and Poles, all major powers at some point in history. They all ended up almost or literally disappearing from political map of the world. Why? Because Russians are a tough bunch. They don't complain when shit hits the fan. Instead, they prepare for the worst case scenario which gives them the mental strength to endure and come victorious. They are intelligent, determined and ready to sacrifice in a way that is unimaginable to the westerners. And while I'm far from being a fan of the way Russia has been ruled by it's elites - no matter which incarnation of Russia we talk about - one has to be a moron to overlook the fact that this country has an unparalleled history of crushing the seemingly unstoppable armies.

Ok first of all no. to say that the soviets ASS-FUCKED the German military is a completely moronic statement. if you look at the Battle of Kursk for example, the soviets outnumbered the Germans by about 3 to 1 BUT they suffered 3 times more losses, same with battle of moscow were the soviets had 2 million casualties while Germany only about 250 thousand. however there are many reasons Germany failed in defeating stalin's regime (they did not want to destroy russia, merely stalin's regime). in 1940 after Poland was defeated, Stalin informed Hitler that he was gonna invade southern european countries, this alarmed Hitler and basicly confirmed his suspicions that Russia wanted to expand in the Western Europe eventually, Stalin's plan during world war 2 was to let the European countries exhaust themselves and then when the right time came start a bolshevik revolution in Europe. so after Stalin's message of expanding south AND the massive building up of armed forces along the European-Russian Border made it very clear what stalins plans were so Germany and the other European countries had to execute a pre-emptive strike on The Soviet union. Hitler's original plan was to encircle Moscow in a huge flanking move with 3 huge army groups, however in august Hitler got ill and could'nt go to the war conferences, so his generals who prefered a classical frontal assault took huge numbers away from these armies and sent them to the middle army group and this is the reason why both of these operations did not succeed before winter, the wehrmacht was simply not equiped for winter... also in 1941 Brittain and Usa sent billions of dollars to the soviet union to keep them in the war. i'm not saying that Russians aren't strong people, i agree with you. but you should know that Stalin used some pretty evil tactics like having any soldier shot if he only dares to retreat, or forcing women and childeren to fight (like in stalingrad). about 10 000 russians fought with hitler to protect their country from the bolsheviks. so Germany definitly did NOT get ass raped, Germany came very close to Defeating Stalin's regime and this would have been way better for Russia since he would'nt have had the chance of killing more of them
@gabrielschultz89
@gabrielschultz89 6 лет назад
Why So Serious They sent more than just money to the ussr. If it wasn't for American money and supplies (and im not trying to brag here) then Russia wouldn't have lasted. I don't care how strong and warm your heart is, without supplies, you cannot win a war. Stalin was doomed from the get go. He had an outdated military that modernized in the wrong direction.

Infact the main part of troops of the moscow counteroffensive part was not siberian at all. It was regular troops not better equipped than the german opponent that STAVKA had held back for weeks in buildup to push back armygroup centre. The siberian myth is due to german officers after the war tried to explain why they lost operation barbarossa. With access to soviet archives it\s now more clear to historians how the red army fought during the war.

Peh, the troop deployments of the Red Army during Barbarossa show that now such attack was in the near future. The pathetic performance by the Red Army during the Winter War forced any such considerations to be shelved for a while. Stalin likely wished for such plans, but was in no position to implement them for some time. The decision to attack the Soviets was a mistake circled by even more mistakes!

@keysphilip: In many ways, the French military was superior to the German. Certainly in terms of equipment. My understaning is that the general commanding French forces was suffering from some aspects of dimentia from syphilis. Then we can talk about the politics. @keysphilip: It was Churchill's holding out in the Battle of Britain period that made a final victory over Hitler possible. W/o Churchill, Hitler would have won WWII. It is that simple in my book. Churchill didn't attend FDR's funeral, some think this might have been reflection of his treatment @ the Tehran & Yalta conferences. FDR went out of his way to snub Churchill in those places. FDR actually stayed in the Soviet embassy in Tehran!

@keysphilip: In the end, the German troops were just stalling for time. They tried to evacuate as many Germans as possible from the East. They knew what kind of vengeful storm was coming. I think it was one of the great mistakes of history that the allies declined to take Berlin. We;d have a much easier post-war/Cold War era if we had. I blame it on the Democrats for putting up an obviously unfit FDR merely to retain power.

@keysphilip: That & Hitler's bolluxing his own troops by insistining operationally useless developements, like ever larger tanks which were heavy & over complex & thus of little value in real combat. Take the American vs. German tank situation. A single German tank was effective against 3 U.S. tanks. The thing is we outproduced them at about 4 to 1, thus the 4th tank always took out the German tank.

Stop claiming that Stalin and Hitler were stupid or were amateur commanders. Both served in war and did outstandingly as soldiers and junior military commanders. It becomes extreme pressure to lead millions when the whole world falls on your shoulders and you make mistakes.
