We have a responsibility as aspiring and actual BCBAs socially to push for change in all industries or settings. I love social change behavior analysis. I love communities, families and individuals that's why we do what we do to scientifically create the interventions and deliver them with compassion for long lasting change. Like your work! ☺️

I completely appreciate your honesty! This field can be so dogmatic. We need to hold our science up to scientific scrutiny and philosophical doubt in order to advance the field! The science is never "settled" but rather continually advances. Thank you for what you are doing!!!

Hey thanks for the kind words. There's a lot more BS out there than most want to tell the youngsters of the field. Main reason I publish on this.

Well said 👏, it's so dogmatic that I have seen upper management completely obliterate the fact that we are dealing with human beings( such as themselves)and not lab rats.

Ryan, this video got me thinking about Goldiamond and his call for behavior analysts to look at the behavior of an individual in relation to the larger social group/context as well as to look at alternative contingencies and the cost/benefit of each (yes, this is a simplification for the purpose of me not droning on and on). It makes me wonder why for these individuals the negative feedback was the more rational choice within this social context. Perhaps by understanding that we could facilitate meaningful change in how we communicate with each other. Thank you for your continued commitment to the field and dissemination even when it comes at a personal cost to you!

This is a real problem in the industry. That others bulky and denigrate others in lieu of building up and collaborating... we work with such a vulnerable population that experiences isolation and are bullied themselves. We should all have more so passion for one another and work together. I have seen it at every center I’ve worked at. ( I’ve worked at 3) I actually got a second MS and got out of ABA. ABA burn out wasn’t working with the kids and families... it is the young and ruthless colleagues that immaturely can’t handle the title professionally enough to build a positive community.

there are no good or bad people. there are only good or bad behaviors. long before i went into Behaviorism i was a special ed student and i stood up for not only the D.D.'s in my special ed class but also for one of the smartest in my class of fellow students. fast forward some i was bullied by psych students before i went into behaviorism and psychology. when i started getting into psychology a psychologist i have been working with who happens to also be a behaviorist nerd like me, suggested R.E.B.T. and i love it. it deals with the should, musts, ought to and perfectionism. the university the bullies were from i attended and spoke of R.E.B.T. I am a male B.A. student and i am not too much different than you Ryan. maybe just a few years older. thanks for your channel, i would like to help. i have also learned of V.T.

For the sake of argument, I don't think there are "bad" or "good" behaviors, since "bad" and "good" are subjective. I think good and bad are based for the most part on values. There's a good podcast on the Behavioral Observations discussing the analysis of mass shootings. Really made me think. To us, a woman who straps a bomb to herself and her child, then proceeds to go to a crowded market and detonate the explosive is exhibiting "bad" behavior. Not to her. Her values are different. To her, those are "good" or the "correct" behaviors based on cultural values.

Thanks Simon - it's more so the two-faced personas that are out there that rub me wrong - I was told that this field was an uphill battle (hell maybe just life is) but sometimes I encounter the most immature behavior by people deemed as the pinacle idols of the field.

These nasty, strange, and anti-behaviorist attitudes Ryan speaks of stain our field and deter our shared mission-- to use behavioral principles to improve outcomes for many. Too many families, professionals, and other related human service providers whom we collaborate with have experienced these aversive "behaviorists" and the rest of us have to restore a broken trust in our collaborative approach. Ryan--keep serving and engaging in our community. As hard as it is, try not to take it personally and DON'T REINFORCE!

Good for you. It’s a good larger question that I think goes with how people live by cultural and institutional rules of what one ought to look or sound like. People judge, some worse than others. It’s that opposite and hierarchical relations we create with others to support a conceptualized self. Keep doing what you do. If you enjoy it and spread love, you’re living the dream.

We can't judge others for sure - I think the goal is to pivot to the folks that want to work with you and provide constructive feedback. I had a couple of emails that were from respectable leaders that seem to think they're in a position to influence anyone... that's the side that I dislike. We are all taught some basics ethics, and sometimes I feel they are crossed behind the scenes... I dont' want to feed intot the trolls, but I do want them to know that their attempts will go by without effect.

I've seen this talked about in other fields and industries - and makes sense we will make contact with it in whatever we do, especially if we are doing something HUGE with it - that makes noise, etc. Maybe it's their selfishness and childishness. Maybe it's feeling like they're getting something ripped from under them by a "greenhorn" (though you've be in field long enough really!) whose created something great and they didn't think of it first. Either way - you are doing something that no one is really doing yet - and it's great. That makes a lot of sense why people are being "haters". It's sad but true that we may have some people in our field (like in any field) who are just downright buttheads? I just recently read a fascinating reddit conversation about the nasty nature of neurosurgeons. Egos are wild, especially in instances of which a field may be more challenging to get into. What you stated about what your mentor said about this field reminded me of this.

Thanks for the lengthy comment. These things help fuel the fire! Sad and nice to know it’s not just our field!
@beardedbehaviorist

Maybe it's that fact that I'm a "greenhorn" or maybe it's my disregard for social convention because of my autism, or maybe it's because my other love is history and my knowledge of it, but "greenhorns" tend to be the most frequent innovators. B. F Skinner was a greenhorn at one point, after all. I tend to take tbe constructive feedback and leave the nasties with the nasties. Or to put it more behaviorally, I reinforce constructive feedback but place the anti-social behaviors on extinction.

I felt this soooo hard. I’m at a place where I don’t even want to be in this field anymore, but I love working with the autistic population and I love behavior science. I’m trying to start my own channel talking about social issues through a behavioral lens but I’m so terrified about putting it out there for the ABA community to see because of the potential for vicious negative criticism.....
@TheDailyBA
@TheDailyBA 3 года назад
Hard question, things I think about: knowledge I have and is it worth sharing, skills I have to put it out there in a unique/interesting way, and goals of what I want out of it or to see in the long-term... only you can answer that! I'll say while there is memorable negativity, there's a lot of positivity that doesn't go unnoticed. Much of this channel you'll see that, just videos like this surface more often most times!

Sooo many bullies, so little time to deal when them all. Hierarchies, power, money, conflicts of interests, clicks, status.... Skinner would be ashamed. Sad times. Focus on working hard and making a difference, rise above as much as possible staying true to your values along the way. And most importantly, everyone always needs to remember to not be a dick. Peace ✌️

As a individual with a diagnosis of aspbergers back in 1984 I think I learned a lesson from my ABA sessions. I learned it does not matter what you think, feel, need, or want. What matters is your actions. Trust that others know what you feel, think, and need, because they understand more than you do. I think ABA teaches valuable skills, but separates actions and emotions. Which leads to complex emotional disorders. I was trained to behave and act only in ways that pleased others, and eventually ended up in an abusive relationship. I think there needs to be focus on a whole child approach. My oldest daughter is on the spectrum, and has had a range of services. She has not had ABA. We looked into it when she was 12. They told me they would require her to sit on a portable toilet fully clothed for 15 minutes per hour, and work on reducing smearing. I put markers and a wipe board on the bathroom wall instead. Teaching on any level is a challenge. I truly appreciate your efforts, and hope you continue to show caring commitment to change.
